Vietnam is a long, narrow country in Southeast Asia, with mountains, river deltas, a long coastline and islands. For Indian travellers it combines UNESCO heritage, regional food, karst scenery and beaches, and it is often good value for local dining and mid-range touring. It works for couples, families, friends and groups, and for first-time travellers abroad.
A trip is built from three regions. In the north, Hanoi has the Old Quarter, French colonial streets and Hoan Kiem Lake, with Ha Long Bay and Ninh Binh within reach. The centre brings Hoi An's lantern-lit old town, Da Nang's beaches, the Marble Mountains and the Hai Van Pass. In the south, Ho Chi Minh City offers colonial landmarks and markets, with the Cu Chi Tunnels and the Mekong Delta nearby.
Most travellers fly into Hanoi (HAN) or Ho Chi Minh City (SGN). Delhi and Mumbai have direct flights, and other cities usually connect through a hub. Weather varies sharply by region, so there is no single perfect month for the whole country. Distances are long, so avoid packing too many regions into a short trip. Seven days suits a focused route, and ten to fourteen days is better for the full north to south journey.
