Vietnam travel guide
The main places to visit in Vietnam are Hanoi, Ha Long Bay and Ninh Binh in the north, Hoi An and Da Nang in the centre, and Ho Chi Minh City with the Mekong Delta in the south. Seven days covers four of these, and ten days or more adds the rest. Weather differs by region.

Vietnam stretches a long way from north to south, and its best-known places sit in three separate regions. The most common planning mistake is trying to cover all three in too few nights, then spending the holiday in transit. Choose the regions that fit your days, give each stop enough time, and use the guide below to decide what deserves a place in your route.
Think of the country in three zones. The north holds Hanoi, Ha Long Bay and Ninh Binh. The centre holds Hoi An, Da Nang and Hue. The south holds Ho Chi Minh City, the Cu Chi Tunnels and the Mekong Delta. Domestic flights usually link Hanoi, Da Nang and Ho Chi Minh City, while trains suit scenic north-south journeys but take longer. Private cars with drivers are efficient for Ha Long Bay, Ninh Binh and Hoi An day trips.
Hanoi is the strongest first base in traveller reports. The Old Quarter gives an easy introduction to street food, French colonial architecture and Hoan Kiem Lake, and it connects conveniently to Ha Long Bay and Ninh Binh. Allow two days. One tip from operators: do not stack Hanoi sightseeing with a same-day Ha Long Bay cruise, because early starts and transfer traffic make the combined day exhausting. Travellers also warn against taking an unverified taxi from Hanoi airport, so book a transfer in advance.
Ha Long Bay is a UNESCO-listed seascape of limestone karsts, caves and floating communities. A cruise is the main way to see it. A two-day, one-night cruise is materially better than a rushed day trip, and travellers often switch to an overnight cruise once they see the day-trip crowds. Weather can alter sailing routes, so verify the vessel's actual route. Book cruise dates with care in storm-prone months, and avoid non-refundable bookings then.
Ninh Binh combines a sampan ride through the karst waterways of Trang An with Hoa Lu and viewpoints around Mua Cave. Travellers often say they wish they had allowed more time here, since it is frequently skipped despite being highly appreciated. Visit Trang An early, and choose either Trang An or Tam Coc, because doing both often duplicates scenery and wastes transfer time. It suits a day trip from Hanoi or an overnight stop.
Hoi An is a preserved trading-town core with lantern-lit evenings, tailor workshops and nearby countryside. Allow two days. Stay near the old town for evening access, but plan beach time separately, because An Bang is not a walkable extension of every riverside hotel. Book centrally located Hoi An hotels early from October to April. A cooking or cycling experience is a popular optional addition.
Da Nang is a practical base for beaches, the Marble Mountains and the Hai Van Pass. My Khe Beach is the city's main beach, and Son Tra Peninsula has luxury resorts. Note that the Golden Bridge is far from the coast and needs a full day, so do not treat it as a quick city excursion. Allow two days if you want beach time as well as sightseeing.
Hue's Imperial City is one of Vietnam's key heritage sites, and it can replace a Da Nang day for heritage lovers. My Son Sanctuary is another heritage stop in the centre. Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park suits travellers who want caves and nature. Central Vietnam is more variable in weather than the north or south, so keep some flexibility from September to December.
Ho Chi Minh City offers French colonial landmarks, wartime museums, energetic markets and southern Vietnamese dining. Cluster District 1 sights on foot, and reserve a separate half-day for the Cu Chi Tunnels, because traffic is unpredictable. Allow two days. District 1 is also a practical area to stay, with a range of hotel categories close to the main sights.
The Mekong Delta takes you through canals, orchards and river communities south of Ho Chi Minh City. Many one-day tours spend more time on transfers and staged stops than on waterways, so choose a smaller-group itinerary or overnight locally. It suits a longer route, since a short trip rarely has room for it.
Sapa and Ha Giang offer northern mountain scenery, while Bac Ha suits travellers interested in ethnic markets. Phu Quoc, Nha Trang, Quy Nhon and Con Dao offer other beach styles, though weather is highly regional. These need extra flights and nights, so add them only to trips of ten days or more. See our Phu Quoc tour packages if islands are your priority.
For ready-made plans, see the 3-day, 5-day and 7-day Vietnam itineraries. Our North to South Vietnam 9N package covers six of these places in nine nights.
Hanoi's Old Quarter or Hoan Kiem area suits a first visit. In Hoi An, stay near the old town or the riverside. In Da Nang, choose the city centre, My Khe or the riverside, depending on whether you want the beach or the city. In Ho Chi Minh City, District 1 keeps the main sights within walking distance.

FAQs
Short answers to what travellers ask about Vietnam.
Hanoi, Ha Long Bay, Ninh Binh, Hoi An, Da Nang and Ho Chi Minh City are the main first-trip highlights. Hue, the Mekong Delta, Sapa and Phong Nha suit longer trips. Choose regions that fit your days instead of covering everything.
Yes. Travellers often skip it and then wish they had not. It offers a sampan ride through the karst waterways of Trang An, Hoa Lu and viewpoints around Mua Cave. Visit Trang An early and pick it or Tam Coc, not both.
Allow two days. The Old Quarter, Hoan Kiem Lake and French colonial architecture fill a day, and street food needs unhurried time. Do not combine Hanoi sightseeing with a same-day Ha Long Bay cruise, because early starts and traffic make it tiring.
Travellers prefer it. A one-night cruise is far less rushed than a day trip and gives more time among the karsts and caves. Weather can alter sailing routes, so verify the vessel's actual route and avoid non-refundable dates in storm-prone months.
They suit different moods. Hoi An has a preserved old town, lantern-lit evenings and tailor workshops. Da Nang is a practical base for beaches, the Marble Mountains and the Hai Van Pass. Many trips use both, and a seven-day route can.
A tight trip cannot. North to south needs ten to fourteen days with domestic flights. Packing too many regions into a short trip is the most common mistake, so choose two or three regions and give each enough time.
It can be, but many one-day tours spend more time on transfers and staged stops than on waterways. A smaller-group itinerary or an overnight stay gives a better experience. It suits trips of ten days or more.
Hanoi's Old Quarter is the strongest first base in traveller reports, with street food, Hoan Kiem Lake and easy links to Ha Long Bay and Ninh Binh. For a broader trip, pair Hanoi with Da Nang or Hoi An.
