Kerala is a state in South India known for its backwaters, tea hills, forests, beaches and old trading cities. It suits couples, families, seniors and groups, and it is one of the easiest holidays to plan, because tourism infrastructure is well developed in the main places and no visa or permit is needed for Indian citizens.
A trip is usually built from a few areas: Kochi for heritage and food, Munnar for tea plantations and viewpoints, Thekkady for the Periyar landscape and spice country, Alleppey or Kumarakom for backwater cruises and houseboats, and Kovalam or Varkala for the beach. Wayanad and Bekal sit in northern Kerala and suit a separate route.
Five days gives a compact Kochi, Munnar and Alleppey route, and seven days gives a balanced mix of hills, wildlife, backwaters and a beach. The ideal range is six to thirteen nights. October to March is generally the most comfortable season, and November to February is the busiest, so book early. Our planners keep routes realistic, because Kerala's stops are farther apart than they look. For more detail, read our Kerala travel guide, places to visit in Kerala and Kerala trip cost.
