Kerala is easy to reach by air from the major metros, and Kochi is the most practical arrival point for a central route. Trains and road transport serve the rest of the state, but distances inside Kerala are longer than they look, so plan your arrival and departure airports along with your route. This guide covers flights, airports, trains, local transport and the points that catch travellers out.
Which airport should you fly into?
Cochin International Airport (COK) near Kochi is the practical central arrival point for most itineraries, because Munnar, Thekkady, Alleppey and Kumarakom radiate from the Kochi area. Thiruvananthapuram suits a southern route that ends at Kovalam and Varkala, and Kozhikode can suit a northern itinerary. A good plan is to arrive at one airport and depart from another, so you do not have to backtrack.
How long are flights to Kerala?
Direct flights operate from the main metros:
- Bengaluru: about 1 hour 10 minutes, with IndiGo, Air India, Air India Express and Akasa Air.
- Mumbai: about 2 hours 10 minutes, with IndiGo, Air India and Air India Express.
- Delhi: about 3 hours 15 minutes, with IndiGo, Air India and Air India Express.
Check the operating schedule for your date, and compare Kochi with Thiruvananthapuram depending on your route.
What documents do you need?
Indian citizens do not need a visa or special permit to enter Kerala, and a passport is not required for domestic travel. Carry a valid government-issued photo ID for flights, hotel check-in and other transport bookings. Protected-area or activity-specific permissions may apply locally for certain parks, treks or activities.
How do you get around Kerala?
Visitors commonly use prepaid or app-based taxis, rental cars with drivers, state-run and private buses, trains, auto-rickshaws, and ferries or scheduled boats. Houseboats are used for backwater stays rather than ordinary point-to-point transport. A private car with a driver is the most flexible choice for a multi-stop route, and it is what most packages use.
Road times: the point that catches people out
The most commonly reported surprise is that Kerala's stops are farther apart than they appear. The hill road from Kochi to Munnar is winding, so plan daylight travel. Distances between Munnar, Thekkady and Alleppey are easy to underestimate, and monsoon rain makes road journeys longer. Allow extra time between the airport, Ernakulam and Fort Kochi in peak traffic, and between Thiruvananthapuram's airport or station and your hotel.
Arrival and departure tips
- Book flights and trains early for November to February.
- Keep buffer time before a flight, especially after a long road transfer.
- Schedule the airport or railway transfer outside Thiruvananthapuram's busiest traffic periods.
- Confirm the boarding point and timings for any houseboat or boat transfer.
- In the monsoon, keep a flexible plan for road transfers.
