Seven days is the ideal length for a focused first trip to Vietnam. It lets you see the north, the centre and the south without constant packing: two days in Hanoi, a night on Ha Long Bay, two days in Hoi An and a final day in Ho Chi Minh City. It does need two domestic flights, so keep luggage compact. This plan follows the standard seven-day skeleton. Our Vietnam Highlights 6N package follows the same route.
The plan at a glance
- Day 1: Hanoi.
- Day 2: Hanoi.
- Day 3: Ha Long Bay.
- Day 4: fly to Da Nang and Hoi An.
- Day 5: Hoi An.
- Day 6: fly to Ho Chi Minh City.
- Day 7: city sightseeing and departure.
Day 1: arrive in Hanoi
Land at Noi Bai International Airport and take a pre-booked transfer, because travellers report overcharging by unverified airport taxis. Check in near the Old Quarter, the easiest first base. Take an evening walk around Hoan Kiem Lake and try a first street-food meal. Keep the day easy.
Day 2: Hanoi sightseeing
Spend the day on the Old Quarter, French colonial architecture and Hoan Kiem Lake. Hanoi has Vietnam's strongest street-food culture, so build in generous eating time. A water-puppet theatre show suits the evening. Do not stack Ha Long Bay onto this day.
Day 3: Ha Long Bay
Drive to Ha Long Bay and board an overnight cruise. The bay is a UNESCO-listed seascape of limestone karsts, caves and floating communities. An overnight cruise is materially better than a rushed day trip. Weather can alter routes, so verify the vessel's actual route, and avoid non-refundable dates in storm-prone months.
Day 4: fly to Da Nang and Hoi An
Return to shore after breakfast and take a domestic flight from Hanoi to Da Nang. Your planner should time the flight against the cruise return. Drive to Hoi An and check in near the old town. Spend the evening among the lanterns, which many travellers rate as the highlight of the town.
Day 5: Hoi An
Give Hoi An a slow day. Explore the Ancient Town, its tailor workshops and the nearby countryside. A cooking class or cycling experience suits the morning. Plan beach time separately, because An Bang is not a walkable extension of every hotel. If you prefer a Da Nang base, you can swap a night to see the Marble Mountains and My Khe Beach.
Day 6: fly to Ho Chi Minh City
Transfer to Da Nang airport and fly to Ho Chi Minh City. Check in to a hotel in District 1 and spend the afternoon on foot, taking in French colonial landmarks and southern food. Keep the evening relaxed.
Day 7: city sightseeing and departure
Cluster District 1 sights, including colonial landmarks, wartime museums and a busy market. Traffic is unpredictable, so keep departure day light. Do not add the Cu Chi Tunnels, which need a separate half-day. Transfer to Tan Son Nhat International Airport with plenty of time.
Hoi An or Da Nang?
Hoi An suits heritage and evenings, while Da Nang suits beaches, the Marble Mountains and the Hai Van Pass. The Golden Bridge is far from the coast and needs a full day, so it does not fit a seven-day route. Choose Hoi An for atmosphere, or split the two nights if you want some beach time.
Where should you stay on this itinerary?
Hanoi's Old Quarter or Hoan Kiem area suits the first nights. Hoi An's old town or riverside is convenient, and Ho Chi Minh City's District 1 keeps sights within walking distance. Choose by location, because a short trip cannot afford long transfers.
What should you skip in seven days?
Skip remote northern trekking, such as Sapa and Ha Giang, which need extra days. Skip the Mekong Delta and Cu Chi unless you extend. Skip Ninh Binh unless you can add a night, although travellers often say they wish they had allowed more time for it. A longer plan, such as North to South Vietnam 9N, fits it comfortably.
When should you take this itinerary?
March to April and October to November are the broadly favourable windows for a three-region route. March is one of the strongest nationwide months. May to September is hotter and wetter, with possible typhoon disruption. October brings heavy rain and flooding risk on the central coast. See the best time to visit Vietnam.
What does a 7-day trip cost?
The cost depends on hotel category, cruise type and cabin, two domestic flights, transfers and season. Packages are land-only and quoted per person on twin sharing, so international flights are extra. See Vietnam trip cost.
