Vietnam is generally a budget-to-midrange destination for Indian travellers, with good value for food, local transport and mid-range touring. Vietnam is often good value for local dining, local transport and mid-range touring. Resort islands and premium cruises can narrow or reverse that advantage. This guide explains what drives the cost of a Vietnam trip, what a land-only package covers, how to save sensibly and how to compare quotes. It does not quote prices, because they vary by departure city, dates, hotel availability and exchange rates. For a quote, ask a planner for a written breakdown.

How much does a Vietnam trip cost?

There is no single figure. Cost rises with the number of nights, the hotel category, the mix of cruise and domestic flights, and the season. Typical land-only packages are quoted per person on twin sharing, and exclude international airfare, visa, insurance, personal expenses and some meals. A longer north-to-south route costs more than a focused seven-day trip, and a premium cruise or resort upgrade lifts the total further. Ask for the exact route and inclusions before comparing any two quotes.

What drives the price?

  • Hotel location and brand: a central Hanoi or Hoi An hotel costs more than one outside prime areas.
  • Ha Long Bay cruise category and cabin: a balcony cabin or premium vessel adds to the total.
  • Domestic flights versus overnight trains: flights save time and cost more.
  • Private transfers and guides: private vehicles are comfortable and cost more than shared ones.
  • Peak-season demand: November to April, Christmas and New Year, and Tet are busier.
  • Visa and travel insurance: paid separately from the land package.
  • International airfare: varies by city, route and date.

What do hotel categories look like?

Packages usually use 3-star, 4-star or 5-star hotels, with breakfast included. Budget stays sit in areas such as Hanoi Old Quarter, Da Nang city centre, Hoi An Old Town and Ho Chi Minh City District 1. Standard 4-star stays use areas such as Hanoi's Hoan Kiem, My Khe or the Da Nang riverside, and Hoi An riverside. Premium 5-star stays sit in similar areas, sometimes with selected dinners. Luxury stays include 5-star and boutique resorts, with breakfast or half-board depending on the design.

What is included in a Vietnam package?

Our packages are land-only. They normally cover hotels on twin sharing, daily breakfast, private airport transfers, sightseeing by private vehicle as listed, the cruise where named and visa assistance. International flights, flights between cities unless your quote lists them, the e-visa fee, travel insurance, other meals, unlisted entry fees and personal expenses are extra. See Vietnam Highlights 6N and North to South Vietnam 9N for examples.

What costs extra on the ground?

Local costs add up in small ways. Airport transfers vary by city and vehicle, so a private transfer arranged in advance avoids overcharging. Meals outside breakfast can be low-cost at local restaurants and higher at hotel restaurants. Market shopping involves bargaining, and travellers suggest starting at roughly half to 60 percent of the asking price. Tips, laundry and optional activities, such as a cooking class or an extra cruise night, are also extra.

How can you save money in Vietnam?

  • Use local restaurants for most meals.
  • Choose 3-star hotels outside prime waterfront areas.
  • Compare cruise inclusions before choosing a category.
  • Use domestic flights selectively, and not on every sector.
  • Travel in the shoulder season, which can balance weather and price.

Saving should not mean packing in too many regions. A rushed route wastes the savings, because transfers cost time and money. Do not choose a cruise only on price, and do not skip the overnight format.

When is Vietnam cheaper?

May to September often has lower hotel and package prices, but rainfall, storms and regional closures can affect plans. May and September can be especially budget-friendly for flights and hotels. The wetter months carry real weather risk, so the saving may not suit a short trip with fixed dates. November to April is the busier, higher-priced period. Read the best time to visit Vietnam for month figures.

How does Vietnam compare with Thailand?

Vietnam often offers lower-cost local dining and strong cultural touring, while Thailand generally has a more mature island-resort and nightlife infrastructure. Resort islands and premium cruises can narrow or reverse the difference. Compare itineraries with the same hotel level and the same number of nights, instead of headline prices. See our Thailand tour packages.

What should you check in a quote?

Ask whether the quote is per person on twin sharing, which hotel category and area it uses, which cruise it names and whether the cabin is a balcony cabin. Check every domestic flight, and which transfers are private. Ask what is excluded, including the e-visa fee, insurance, meals and entry fees. Make sure the number of nights fits your route.

What currency and payments should you plan for?

The currency is the Vietnamese dong. The rate is roughly 300 to 310 VND to one rupee, subject to market rates. Carry a mix of payment methods and check fares before taxi rides.
