Japan is an island country in East Asia, and it rewards travellers who plan around its rail map. Trains and subways are efficient, Shinkansen links the major regions, and public safety is high. Basic English is common in airports, hotels and transport hubs, but it thins out beyond the main tourist areas, so a translation app helps. For Indian travellers, Japan needs a visa before travel and a longer flight than most Asian trips.
A first visit is built from a few anchors. Tokyo is the modern hub, with Shibuya, Harajuku, historic Asakusa and teamLab-style attractions. Kyoto adds Fushimi Inari, Kiyomizu-dera, Gion and its gardens. Osaka brings street food, Dotonbori and Osaka Castle, and Nara is an easy day trip for its deer park and Todai-ji. Mount Fuji and Hakone add lake scenery and hot-spring stays. With more time, Hiroshima and Miyajima or Hokkaido can be added.
Most travellers land at Tokyo Haneda or Narita and, where fares allow, fly home from Osaka. Seven days is ideal for a first trip, and ten to fourteen days allows a more comfortable multi-region plan. Choose from Japan Golden Route 7N, Japan Family with Disney & USJ 7N, Japan Autumn Colours 7N and Japan Cherry Blossom Special 8N, or ask us to customise one.
Our planners build the itinerary around hotel availability and rail geography, not around counting attractions. For deeper planning, read our Japan travel guide, places to visit in Japan and Japan trip cost. If you want to combine Japan with another country, see our Japan and Korea packages.
