Masai Mara is a wildlife reserve in Narok County, in southwestern Kenya, and it sits within the wider Mara ecosystem. It is a safari destination rather than a city break. Game drives in safari vehicles are the main activity, and English and Swahili are the national languages of Kenya. For Indian travellers the journey is longer than most, so plan the trip around a few nights rather than a short stay.
Flights from Delhi and Mumbai take about 10 hours, and from Bengaluru about 11 hours. None of these routes is direct, and the trip usually has one connection before you reach Nairobi. From Nairobi you travel on to the Mara by light aircraft or by 4x4 safari vehicle. Game drives run in the early morning and afternoon, and some trips include a full-day route with a picnic lunch.
The reserve is the main area for game drives. The Mara River is linked with the wildebeest and zebra crossings during the annual migration, though crossings depend on the season. The Mara Triangle offers grassland viewing with a different access pattern, and private conservancies such as Naboisho and Olare Motorogi offer lower-density game viewing. Four to five nights suit most first visits, while three nights is tight once travel time is counted.
Choose the Masai Mara Fly-in Safari 3N for a short trip with a light-aircraft transfer, or the Masai Mara Great Migration 4N for a five-day plan that adds a conservancy visit. For planning, read the Masai Mara travel guide, trip cost and visa guide for Indians. Kenya is a wider destination, so see our Kenya tour packages if you want to plan a longer trip beyond the Mara.
