The journey to Masai Mara has two parts: a long international flight to Nairobi, and a shorter onward trip into the reserve. Both parts need planning, because connection times and airstrip transfers affect the first day of your safari. This guide explains the flight times from India, the onward options, the documents you need on arrival and how to get around once you are in the reserve.
What are the flight times from India?
Flights from Delhi and Mumbai to Nairobi take about 10 hours, and flights from Bengaluru take about 11 hours. None of these routes is direct, so most trips include one connection. Airlines that operate on these routes include Kenya Airways, Ethiopian Airlines, Qatar Airways and Emirates. Schedules change, so check the exact timings with your airline or planner when you book.
Plan your flights so that you arrive in Nairobi in good time for the onward connection. If your flight into Nairobi arrives late, ask your planner about the connection timing before you travel, because onward options depend on the schedule. A late arrival can change the transfer for the same day, so ask your planner to confirm the timings before you pay.
How do you get from Nairobi to the Mara?
There are two main options. The first is a scheduled or charter light aircraft from Nairobi to a Mara airstrip. Mara Serena Airport (MRE) is the nearest airstrip and a practical gateway for the central Mara. The second is a 4x4 safari vehicle by road. The road option takes longer than the flight. Your planner will choose the option that suits your dates and the location of your camp.
Transfers between Mara airstrips can be lengthy. Check the exact airstrip against your lodge's location before you book, and ask for the transfer time in your quote.
What documents do you need on arrival?
Indian ordinary-passport holders need an approved Kenya Electronic Travel Authorisation before travel. Your passport should be valid for at least six months after the planned arrival date and have at least one blank page. Carry your accommodation or host details, your onward ticket and your itinerary, because an immigration officer may ask for them. You may also be asked to show evidence of sufficient funds. Carry any health documents that Kenyan authorities require.
How do you get around once you are in the reserve?
Game drives are done in safari vehicles with a driver-guide, and walking independently is not permitted in wildlife areas. Road conditions can make short distances slow, especially between the gates and the camps. The Talek Gate area is a common access point, and a lodge with a clear gate-transfer plan saves time before early-morning drives. Ask your planner which gate your camp uses.
What should you pack for the journey?
Pack a small bag for the light-aircraft leg, and check the baggage allowance with your planner before you leave home. Carry a day bag with your documents, medicines and camera, and keep your passport, eTA approval and onward tickets in one easy-to-reach place. Dress in layers for cool mornings and warm afternoons, and bring sun protection and a hat for game drives. Early starts are common, so pack a warm layer in your day bag.
What is the time difference?
Kenya is on UTC+3 with no daylight saving time. India is on UTC+5:30, so Kenya is two and a half hours behind India throughout the year. Check the local time when you plan connections, transfers and calls home.
How should you plan your arrival?
Plan for a full day of travel from India, and keep the first afternoon light. The first safari drive is usually in the afternoon of arrival, so there is little time for a long transfer after a connection. Ask your planner to match the flight timings with the onward connection and the first drive. Keep the first night simple, and rest before the early-morning drives begin.
