FAQs

Masai Mara Travel Guide: FAQs

Short answers to what travellers ask about Masai Mara.

How many days do I need in Masai Mara?

Four to five nights suits a first visit, because it allows several game drives and a conservancy or river visit. Three nights is possible but tight once travel time is counted. Fourteen days is too long for the Mara alone, so add other Kenyan destinations and rest days if you want a longer trip.

Is Masai Mara safe for tourists?

Safari stays are generally organised with guides and drivers. Follow camp instructions, avoid walking in wildlife areas on your own, and never approach animals. Check the arrangements for each camp with your planner, and carry the health documents Kenyan authorities require.

What currency is used in Masai Mara?

Kenya uses the Kenyan shilling (KES). The exchange rate against the rupee changes, so check the current rate before you travel. Compare how much you receive before you exchange money or pay by card, and confirm in your written quote which currency each charge uses.

Is English widely spoken in Masai Mara?

English and Swahili are the main languages used in Kenya. Maa is spoken by Maasai communities. Your guide and driver can help with directions and wildlife questions, which makes the reserve easier to navigate on a first visit.

What is the time difference between India and Kenya?

Kenya is on UTC+3 with no daylight saving time. India is on UTC+5:30, so Kenya is two and a half hours behind India. Check your flight times against local time when you plan connections and transfers.

Do I need a visa for Kenya?

Yes. Indian ordinary-passport holders need an approved Kenya Electronic Travel Authorisation before they travel. Apply through the official Kenya eTA portal and travel only after approval. Visa assistance is included in our packages, but visa fees are separate.

When is the best time to visit Masai Mara?

July to October is generally the driest period and overlaps with the commonly observed migration season. April and May are the wettest months. Sightings cannot be promised in any month, so plan for a few nights of game drives rather than a single crossing.

Can I visit Masai Mara on a day trip from Nairobi?

Scheduled and charter light aircraft and 4x4 transfers link Nairobi with the Mara, but getting there and back uses much of the day. A day trip does not leave room for several game drives, so plan at least three nights for a worthwhile visit.
