Japan has four distinct seasons, and weather and demand vary a lot by month and by region. Spring and autumn are the most comfortable seasons, but they are also the most expensive and crowded. Picking the right month depends on whether you value scenery, comfort, price or snow. This guide covers each season and then goes month by month, using typical figures for Tokyo from our destination research.
When is the best time to visit Japan?
For most Indian travellers, March to May and October to November work best. Temperatures are comfortable, and the seasonal scenery is a major draw. If you want fewer crowds and better value, late May, June and January to mid-March are commonly suggested. If snow matters most, December to March is the window. Regional peak dates differ, so a single national season label is unreliable.
Spring: March to May
March is mild but changeable, with highs near 14°C and cherry blossoms starting in southern and urban areas. April is excellent for sightseeing, with highs near 19°C, though peak blossom varies by region and dates sell quickly. May is warm and comfortable before the rainy season, with highs near 24°C, and it is a strong all-round month. Golden Week in late April and early May is busy.
Summer: June to August
June is when the rainy season commonly begins, with frequent rain and humidity, though sightseeing remains practical. Highs are near 26°C, and the month is quieter and sometimes better value. July and August are hot and humid, with highs near 30°C to 31°C. Festivals and mountain travel are attractive, but midday sightseeing is tiring. Obon in mid-August is busy, and typhoon risk increases later in the month.
Autumn: September to November
September is warm and wet, with elevated typhoon risk, though late September can improve. October has comfortable temperatures, with highs near 22°C, and autumn colour begins in northern and high-altitude areas, but rain can be substantial. November is cool and often clear, with highs near 17°C, and excellent for foliage in Kyoto and Tokyo. Foliage peaks vary by region, from October to early December.
Winter: December to February
December is cool and relatively dry, with highs near 12°C, winter illuminations and the start of ski season. January and February are cooler, highs of 10°C to 11°C, generally dry and quieter. They suit city sightseeing and snow regions, but daylight is short. Hokkaido, Nagano, Niigata and Tohoku offer powder skiing and winter scenery.

Which months are busiest and most expensive?
Cherry blossom season in late March and early April, Golden Week in late April and early May, Obon in mid-August and autumn foliage create sharp hotel price rises and limited availability. Travellers often underestimate the spring crowds. Book Kyoto and Hakone first, then fit Tokyo and Osaka around the confirmed rooms. Reserve Shinkansen seats and timed attractions early.
Which months are cheaper?
January, February and June are generally less expensive, but colder or less scenic. Late May is often a good-value month with comfortable weather. Budget travellers can also use business hotels near stations and compare rail passes with point-to-point tickets. See Japan trip cost for the price drivers.
Which month suits which traveller?
- Cherry blossoms: late March to early April, and book early.
- Autumn foliage: November for Kyoto and Tokyo.
- Snow and skiing: December to March.
- Families and honeymooners: April, May, October and November.
- Fewer crowds: late May, June, January and February.
