Thailand travel guide
The main places to visit in Thailand for a first trip are Bangkok, Phuket, Krabi, Chiang Mai, Pattaya, Ayutthaya and Koh Samui. Most travellers pair Bangkok with one beach region. Five to seven days suits that plan, while ten to fourteen days adds northern Thailand or a second coast.

Thailand is large, and the places travellers want are spread across the mainland and two seas. The key to a good trip is choosing a small number of bases and giving each enough time. This guide explains the seven places that appear most often in first-trip plans, what each is good for, how long to allow and what to watch for. Details come from our destination research and from what travellers report.
Bangkok combines the Grand Palace and Wat Pho with major markets, river districts and exceptional Thai food. It is also the most practical first base. Travellers say the BTS Skytrain and MRT are often more useful than taxis in heavy traffic, and grouping sights by neighbourhood saves hours. Wat Arun and the Chao Phraya river area suit the same day, while Chinatown and a market fit an evening. Do not schedule the Grand Palace, Ayutthaya and a late airport transfer on one day, because Bangkok traffic makes the routing unreliable. Two days covers the core sights.
Phuket is a practical Andaman base for beaches, Old Town, sunset viewpoints and island excursions. It has broader hotel, nightlife and excursion choices than Krabi. Patong is convenient but busy, so Kata, Karon, Bang Tao or Kamala usually give a better balance. Some travellers describe Phuket's most promoted attractions as crowded or underwhelming, so choose your area with care and keep the plan relaxed. Allow three days. You can compare it with the quieter option below, or see our Phuket Krabi tour packages.
Krabi offers limestone cliffs, Railay Beach and Ao Nang, with short boat transfers for high-impact scenery. Travellers describe Ao Nang as a convenient, relaxed base for island trips and beach time. Weather can cancel longtail-boat excursions, so keep one flexible day rather than promising a tightly timed island-hopping schedule. Rock climbing at Railay is one of the adventure activities on offer. Allow three days. The Phi Phi Islands and the Maya Bay area are popular excursion names on the Andaman coast.
Chiang Mai offers historic temples, northern cuisine, craft villages and access to mountain landscapes. Wat Phra That Doi Suthep and Doi Inthanon are the main sightseeing names. A trip here pairs well with an ethical elephant experience or a mountain day. Avoid outdoor northern plans during severe burning-season haze, which can affect visibility and air quality from roughly February to April. Allow three days, and note that a five-day trip rarely has room for it unless domestic flight timings are favourable.
Pattaya provides a short-transfer beach break from Bangkok with nightlife, family attractions and nearby islands. It works better as a convenient add-on than as Thailand's most scenic beach. If you prefer scenic beaches, skip it and spend the nights in Krabi or Phuket. Allow two days. Our Bangkok and Pattaya tour packages cover this combination, as does the Bangkok Pattaya Classic 4N package.
Ayutthaya's temple ruins and prang-style monuments make a strong historical day trip from Bangkok. Start early and group the riverside ruins geographically, because midday heat and scattered sites make slow self-guided routing uncomfortable. Skip it if you arrive late in Bangkok. Our Thailand Highlights 6N package includes an Ayutthaya day trip.
Koh Samui has resort beaches, wellness stays and access to Ang Thong Marine Park in the Gulf of Thailand. Use it for Gulf-side beach planning during the Andaman wet season, but check ferry conditions before adding Koh Tao or Koh Phangan. Allow three days. Chaweng Beach is one of the popular beaches. See our Koh Samui and Chiang Mai tour packages for combined trips.
Beyond the main seven, nature itineraries often include Khao Sok National Park, Erawan National Park, Ang Thong Marine Park and Doi Inthanon. Less-visited options include Koh Yao Noi, Koh Kood, Nan, Kanchanaburi and Koh Chang. Heritage fans can add Sukhothai Historical Park. These need more days and longer transfers, so they suit ten to fourteen days rather than a short first trip.
Travellers repeatedly say that packing Bangkok, Pattaya and Phuket or Krabi into a short trip means too many hotel changes and long transfers. Two destinations, with rest after the international flight, suits families especially. See the 5-day Thailand itinerary for a worked example.
Bangkok, the north and the Andaman coast are generally most comfortable from November to February. The Gulf islands, including Koh Samui, often have their drier period from January to August. This means a month that is poor for Phuket can still suit Koh Samui. Read best time to visit Thailand before you choose the coast.

FAQs
Short answers to what travellers ask about Thailand.
Common first-trip combinations include Bangkok, Phuket or Krabi, Chiang Mai, Pattaya, Ayutthaya and Koh Samui. Most travellers choose Bangkok plus one beach region, then add northern Thailand or a second coast if they have ten days or more.
Two. Bangkok plus one beach base, such as Phuket or Krabi, works well in five days. Adding Chiang Mai or several islands creates long transfers and many hotel changes, which travellers often say spoils the trip.
Phuket has broader hotel, nightlife and excursion choices. Krabi is generally better for limestone scenery and a quieter base. Some travellers prefer slower beach time in Ao Nang. With five or six nights you can include both.
Pattaya suits a short, easy beach break from Bangkok with nightlife, family attractions and nearby islands. It is not Thailand's most scenic beach, so choose Krabi or Phuket if scenery matters more than a short transfer.
Yes. Ayutthaya's temple ruins and prang-style monuments make a strong historical day trip. Start early, group the riverside ruins together and avoid midday heat. Do not combine it with the Grand Palace and a late airport transfer on one day.
Koh Samui and the Gulf islands often have their drier period from January to August, so they can suit months when the Andaman coast is wet. Check ferry conditions before adding Koh Tao or Koh Phangan to your plan.
Severe burning-season haze can affect visibility and air quality in northern Thailand from roughly February to April. Avoid outdoor northern itineraries in that period, and check conditions before you commit to trekking or mountain days.
Travellers say Bangkok is the most practical first base because it combines temples, markets and shopping with BTS and MRT access. Riverside, Sukhumvit and Pratunam are typical hotel areas. Choose by transit access and the sights you plan to group.
