Thailand has no single best month, because the country sits between two seas and each coast has its own rainy period. Bangkok, the north and the Andaman coast, with Phuket and Krabi, share a cooler, drier window from November to February. The Gulf of Thailand side, with Koh Samui, follows a different pattern. This guide explains the seasons, gives a month-by-month list and shows how to choose by region. Weather figures come from our destination research, so check a forecast before you fly.

Thailand weather at a glance

  • November to February: cooler, drier and most comfortable for most regions; peak season from December.
  • March to April: hot, with highs of 34°C to 35°C; April brings Songkran.
  • May to October: wetter, with showers most days in many areas.
  • September: among the wettest months, with lowest-season pricing in many areas.
  • Gulf islands: often drier from January to August.

What is the best time to visit Thailand overall?

For most of Thailand, the best overall time is November to February. Conditions are generally cooler and drier, and sightseeing in Bangkok and the north is easier. January and February are warm and relatively dry, with highs of about 32°C to 33°C. December has the least rain of the year at about 10 mm, but it is also the peak month, especially over Christmas and New Year. If you can travel in November or early December, you get good weather with slightly less pressure on hotels.

Which month suits the Andaman coast?

The Andaman coast, with Phuket, Krabi and Koh Phi Phi, is generally best from November to February, and December to January is often the clearest window. November is very good, though some rain remains possible. October is a transition month with rain, especially on this coast. From May to September showers increase, sea conditions can change and some boat services reduce. Weather can cancel longtail-boat excursions, so keep one flexible day in your plan.

Which month suits the Gulf islands?

Koh Samui and the Gulf islands, including Koh Phangan and Koh Tao, often have their drier period from January to August. Some sources highlight January to mid-March as especially good. This means Koh Samui can be a better beach choice than the Andaman coast in June, July and August. The Gulf coast may still be wet in November. Check ferry conditions before adding Koh Tao or Koh Phangan.

What about Bangkok and Chiang Mai?

Bangkok is most comfortable from November to February. March and April turn very hot, and the wet season brings regular showers from May to October. Chiang Mai follows a similar pattern, with one extra point: severe burning-season haze can affect visibility and air quality from roughly February to April. Avoid outdoor northern plans in those weeks if you can.

When is peak season and when is it cheaper?

December to February, and especially the Christmas and New Year period, command the strongest demand. Songkran in April also increases domestic travel and hotel pressure. May to October is cheaper, with September the lowest-season month in many areas. Travelling outside Christmas and New Year, and booking flights and hotels early for peak months, helps control the budget. See Thailand trip cost.

Which month suits which traveller?

  • First-timers and sightseers: November to February.
  • Families: November to March, with short transfers and shaded plans.
  • Honeymooners: November to February.
  • Budget travellers: May to October, with flexible plans and the right coast.
  • Festival fans: April for Songkran.
  • Gulf beach seekers: January to August on Koh Samui.

What should you pack and plan by season?

In the cool season, pack light cotton, one warmer layer for northern evenings and sun protection. In the hot months, plan temple visits in the morning and keep the afternoon for rest. In the wet season, carry a light rain jacket, keep boat trips flexible and ask for refundable or flexible boat components. Mosquito-borne diseases have more cases in the rainy season, so use insect repellent. Dress for temples with covered shoulders and knees in every season.

FAQs

Best Time to Visit Thailand: FAQs

Short answers to what travellers ask about Thailand.

What is the best time to visit Thailand?

November to February is generally best for Bangkok, northern Thailand and the Andaman coast, with highs of 31°C to 33°C and little rain. The Gulf islands often have their drier period from January to August, so check your coast.

Which is the wettest month in Thailand?

September is one of the wettest months, with about 220 mm of rain, and October is close behind at about 190 mm. Lowest-season pricing is common in many areas, but plan flexible days and expect reduced island boat services.

When should I visit Phuket and Krabi?

The Andaman coast is generally best from November to February, and December to January is often the clearest window. Showers increase from May, and some boat services reduce in the wet season. Keep one flexible day for island trips.

When should I choose Koh Samui?

Koh Samui and the Gulf islands often have their drier period from January to August. They can be a better beach choice than the Andaman coast in August, though the Gulf coast may still be wet in November.

Is April a good month for Thailand?

April is very hot, with highs near 35°C. It is good for Songkran celebrations but less comfortable for sightseeing, and domestic travel and hotel demand rise. Plan temples early in the day and keep afternoons for the pool.

Is Thailand cheaper in the monsoon season?

Prices are generally lower from May to October, and September has lowest-season pricing in many areas. The trade-off is showers and boat disruption, so book flexible or refundable boat components and keep the itinerary relaxed.

Is December a good time for Thailand?

December has excellent weather, with about 10 mm of rain and highs near 31°C, but it is peak season. Demand peaks over Christmas and New Year, so book flights, hotels and activities early and expect higher prices.

When should families visit Thailand?

Family-focused guidance points to November to March, when weather is most comfortable. Choose hotels with pools, short transfer chains and shaded activities, and avoid overloading the plan with ferries. Book early for December and January.
