7-Day Thailand Itinerary

Quick answer

A 7-day Thailand itinerary is ideal for Bangkok, Ayutthaya and one beach region, either Phuket or Krabi, with one full island-excursion day. Skip adding Chiang Mai and Koh Samui together. November to February is generally the most comfortable time. Plan two hotel bases and one domestic flight.

Day-by-day itinerary

Based on a 6-night package

  1. Day1

    Arrival in Bangkok

Land at Suvarnabhumi Airport and meet your driver for the transfer to your hotel. Check in and rest. Keep the first evening light with a short walk and a Thai dinner, because the next days cover temples, markets and a day trip. A relaxed start helps you recover from the journey.

    BreakfastNight in Bangkok
  2. Day2

    Bangkok temples and markets

Visit the Grand Palace and Wat Pho in the morning, and dress for temples with covered shoulders and knees. Cross the river to Wat Arun, then explore Chinatown and a market in the evening. Group the sights by neighbourhood, because Bangkok traffic makes the routing unreliable.

    BreakfastNight in Bangkok
  3. Day3

    Ayutthaya day trip

Start early for Ayutthaya, where temple ruins and prang-style monuments make a strong historical day. Group the riverside ruins together to save time, and avoid the midday heat where you can. Return to Bangkok by late afternoon. Do not plan an airport transfer on the same day.

    BreakfastNight in Bangkok
  4. Day4

    Transfer to Phuket

Transfer to the airport for your domestic flight to Phuket, booked separately unless your written quote lists it. Your driver meets you for the hotel transfer. Check in and enjoy the afternoon on the beach. Kata, Karon, Bang Tao and Kamala usually give a better balance than Patong.

    BreakfastNight in Phuket
  5. Day5

    Phuket beach day

Spend the day on the beach and by the pool. In the late afternoon, visit Phuket Old Town and a sunset viewpoint. This day gives the trip a slower rhythm after the Bangkok sightseeing, and travellers often say they enjoy this kind of free time the most.

    BreakfastNight in Phuket
  6. Day6

    Island excursion

Take a full-day boat excursion to the islands, with swimming and snorkelling. Boat plans depend on the weather and sea conditions, so your operator confirms the exact timing close to the date. Carry sun protection, and follow all marine-safety instructions on the boat and in the water.

    BreakfastNight in Phuket
  7. Day7

    Departure

Enjoy breakfast and check out. Your driver takes you to Phuket airport for departure, leaving extra time for check-in. If your flight is later in the day, use the morning for a last swim or a short walk, and ask the hotel about late check-out.

    Breakfast

Seven days is the ideal length for a first trip to Thailand, according to our research. It gives Bangkok two days, adds an Ayutthaya day or a leisure day, and leaves three days on one beach coast with a full island excursion. The plan below keeps to two bases, which is what travellers recommend, because frequent hotel changes and long transfers spoil short trips. It also leaves free time, since many travellers say they enjoy slower hotel or beach time more than a packed schedule. Adjust the beach choice to your month, using Phuket or Krabi on the Andaman coast.

The plan at a glance

  • Day 1: arrive in Bangkok.
  • Day 2: Bangkok sightseeing.
  • Day 3: Ayutthaya or leisure.
  • Day 4: transfer to Phuket or Krabi.
  • Day 5: beach day.
  • Day 6: island excursion.
  • Day 7: leisure and departure.

Day 1: arrive in Bangkok

Arrive at Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK) and transfer to your hotel. Keep the day light, with a short walk and a Thai dinner, because the next days are busier. A hotel near the BTS or MRT makes sightseeing easier, since the trains are generally more practical than taxis in heavy traffic.

Day 2: Bangkok sightseeing

Spend the morning at the Grand Palace and Wat Pho, dressing for temples with covered shoulders and knees. Cross the river to Wat Arun, then explore the Chao Phraya river area. In the evening, visit Chinatown or a market for Thai food. Group the sights by neighbourhood to save time.

Day 3: Ayutthaya or leisure

Ayutthaya's temple ruins and prang-style monuments make a strong historical day trip from Bangkok. Start early and group the riverside ruins together, because midday heat and scattered sites make slow routing uncomfortable. If you prefer a gentler day, choose a market, a cooking class or a spa instead. Do not combine Ayutthaya with a late airport transfer.

Day 4: transfer to Phuket or Krabi

Take a domestic flight to your beach base. In Phuket, Kata, Karon, Bang Tao and Kamala usually give a better balance than Patong. In Krabi, Ao Nang is a convenient, relaxed base for island trips and beach time. Settle in and spend the afternoon on the beach or by the pool.

Day 5: beach day

Keep this day open for the beach, Phuket Old Town and a sunset viewpoint, or for Railay Beach and Ao Nang if you are in Krabi. Use it as a buffer in case an excursion is rescheduled. Travellers often shift toward slower hotel time once they arrive, finding fixed schedules tiring.

Day 6: island excursion

Take a full-day boat excursion to the islands, with swimming and snorkelling. From Phuket, popular names include the Phi Phi Islands, and the Maya Bay area is a well-known beach. Weather can cancel boat trips, so keep the day flexible and confirm timings close to the date. Follow marine-safety instructions.

Day 7: leisure and departure

Use the morning for a last swim, then check out and transfer to the airport with generous time. If your flight is late, ask about late check-out.

What should you skip in seven days?

Skip adding Chiang Mai and Koh Samui together, because the extra flights and transfers would eat the trip. If you want the north, choose ten days or more. See the places to visit in Thailand guide for how to combine regions.

How should you pick the coast?

November to February is generally the most comfortable time for the Andaman coast, so use Phuket or Krabi then. From May to September, the Gulf side, including Koh Samui, often has a drier period, so consider swapping. Check ferry conditions before adding Koh Tao or Koh Phangan. See best time to visit Thailand.

What does it cost?

Hotel category, location, dates, the domestic flight and speedboat choice drive the cost. Peak dates around Christmas, New Year and Songkran are most expensive. Our packages are land-only, so flights are extra. See Thailand trip cost.

FAQs

7-Day Thailand Itinerary: FAQs

Short answers to what travellers ask about Thailand.

Is 7 days enough for Thailand?

Seven days is ideal for Bangkok plus one beach region. It covers the main Bangkok sights, Ayutthaya or a leisure day, and a full island excursion. Adding Chiang Mai and Koh Samui together would be too much.

What should I do in 7 days in Thailand?

Spend two days in Bangkok, take an Ayutthaya day or a leisure day, then fly to Phuket or Krabi for a beach day and a full island excursion. Keep the final day for departure.

Should I choose Phuket or Krabi for 7 days?

Phuket has broader hotel, nightlife and excursion choices. Krabi is generally better for limestone scenery and a quieter base. Either works for three beach days, so choose by style.

Can I fit Chiang Mai into 7 days?

It is not comfortable. Chiang Mai needs about three days and a domestic flight. Our research suggests ten days or more for Bangkok plus the north plus a beach region.

How many hotel changes are sensible?

Two bases is ideal, with one domestic flight in between. Travellers say frequent hotel changes and long transfers spoil short trips, so keep the number low.

Is the island excursion reliable?

It depends on the weather and sea conditions. Weather can cancel boat trips, so keep a flexible day and confirm timings close to the date. Ask for flexible boat components in the wet season.
