5-Day Thailand Itinerary

Quick answer

A 5-day Thailand itinerary covers Bangkok temples and markets, a domestic flight to Phuket or Krabi, and one beach or island excursion. Our research rates five days as a good fit for Bangkok plus one beach base. Skip Chiang Mai and multiple island changes. November to February is generally the most comfortable season.

Day-by-day itinerary

Based on a 4-night package

  1. Day1

    Arrival in Bangkok

Land at Suvarnabhumi Airport and meet your driver for the transfer to your Bangkok hotel. Check in and rest after the flight. Travellers often say the first day goes better when it stays light, so keep the evening for a short walk and an easy Thai dinner near the hotel.

    BreakfastNight in Bangkok
  2. Day2

Grand Palace, Wat Pho and the river

Start early with the Grand Palace and Wat Pho, and dress for temples with covered shoulders and knees. Move on to the Chao Phraya river area and Wat Arun. In the evening, visit a market or food district. Group these sights by neighbourhood, because Bangkok traffic makes long cross-city hops slow.

    BreakfastNight in Bangkok
  3. Day3

    Transfer to Pattaya

Check out after breakfast and travel to Pattaya by private vehicle, a short beach-break transfer from Bangkok. Check in and spend the afternoon at the beach or hotel pool. Pattaya works best as a relaxed add-on with nightlife and family attractions, so keep the first evening easy.

    BreakfastNight in Pattaya
  4. Day4

    Pattaya at leisure

Use the day for beach time, family attractions or the nearby islands, depending on the weather and your pace. Your planner can suggest options before you travel, and optional activities are booked at extra cost. Leave room to rest, since many travellers say they prefer a slower day over an overfilled one.

    BreakfastNight in Pattaya
  5. Day5

    Departure

Enjoy breakfast and check out. Your driver takes you back toward the airport for departure, and the road transfer is planned with extra time for traffic. If your flight is late, use the morning for a last walk or some shopping before you leave Pattaya.

    Breakfast

Five days is a good length for a first trip to Thailand. It lets you see Bangkok properly, fly to one beach base and still have a full beach or island day. The plan below groups the sights by area, keeps the transfer day light and leaves a flexible final morning. It avoids the most common mistake travellers report: cramming Bangkok, Pattaya and Phuket or Krabi into too few days, which means frequent hotel changes and long transfers. Choose two bases, leave rest time after the international flight and adjust the beach stop to the season.

The plan at a glance

  • Day 1: arrive in Bangkok.
  • Day 2: Bangkok temples and markets.
  • Day 3: fly to Phuket or Krabi.
  • Day 4: beach or island excursion.
  • Day 5: leisure and departure.

Day 1: arrive in Bangkok

Arrive at Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK) and transfer to your hotel. Keep the first day light, with a short walk and a Thai dinner. Family reports recommend leaving recovery time after the international flight rather than scheduling major sightseeing straight away. If you arrive in the evening, rest and start fresh. Choose a hotel near a BTS or MRT station, because the trains are often more practical than taxis in traffic.

Day 2: Bangkok temples and markets

Start early with the Grand Palace and Wat Pho, then cross to Wat Arun and the Chao Phraya river area. Dress for temples, with shoulders and knees covered. In the afternoon, rest, then visit a market or food district in the evening. Group the stops by neighbourhood, and do not schedule a late airport transfer on the same day, because Bangkok traffic is unreliable. Check tuk-tuk prices first, and ignore claims that a temple is closed.

Day 3: fly to Phuket or Krabi

Take a domestic flight to Phuket or Krabi and transfer to your hotel. Phuket suits travellers who want broader hotel, nightlife and excursion choices. Krabi suits those who prefer limestone scenery and a quieter base, and travellers describe Ao Nang as a relaxed base for island trips. In Phuket, Kata, Karon, Bang Tao and Kamala usually give a better balance than Patong. Spend the afternoon on the beach and keep the evening easy.

Day 4: beach or island excursion

This is the main coast day. From Phuket, take a boat excursion to the islands. From Krabi, visit Railay Beach and the limestone coast by longtail boat. Weather can cancel boat excursions, so your operator confirms timings close to the date. Keep sun protection, a change of clothes and follow marine-safety instructions. If the sea is rough, choose a beach, a spa or Phuket Old Town instead.

Day 5: leisure and departure

Use the morning for a last swim or a walk. Check out and transfer to the airport with generous time. Our research notes that travellers often add slower hotel or beach time once they find tightly packed sightseeing tiring, so this slower morning helps. If your flight is in the evening, ask the hotel about late check-out.

What should you skip in five days?

Skip Chiang Mai unless domestic flight timings are favourable, because it needs at least three days. Skip multiple island changes, which waste time on ferries. Skip Pattaya if you prefer scenic beaches, and skip Ayutthaya unless you can spare a day. If you want Ayutthaya, read the 7-day Thailand itinerary.

Phuket or Krabi for this itinerary?

Phuket has broader hotel, nightlife and excursion choices, while Krabi is generally better for limestone scenery and a quieter base. Some travellers describe Phuket's popular attractions as crowded, and present slower beach time in Krabi or Ao Nang as a more relaxing alternative. Choose Phuket for variety and Krabi for scenery. The Phuket Krabi Island Escape 5N package combines both over six days.

When should you take this itinerary?

November to February is generally the most comfortable time for Bangkok and the Andaman coast. From May to October the Andaman coast sees more showers and boat services may reduce, so consider the Gulf side, where Koh Samui is often in a drier period from January to August. What does it cost?

Hotel category, location, season, the domestic flight and private transfers drive the cost. Our packages are land-only, so international flights are extra. See Thailand trip cost for details, and avoid Christmas, New Year and Songkran if you want to keep the cost down.

FAQs

5-Day Thailand Itinerary: FAQs

Short answers to what travellers ask about Thailand.

Is 5 days enough for Thailand?

Five days is a good fit for Bangkok plus one beach base. It covers the main Bangkok sights and one island or beach day. Skip Chiang Mai and multiple island changes, which need more time.

Can I visit Phuket and Krabi in 5 days?

It is possible, but it adds a transfer and a hotel change, and our research warns that extra hotel changes spoil short trips. Choose one beach base in five days and add the second with six or seven nights.

Should I choose Phuket or Krabi?

Phuket has broader hotel, nightlife and excursion choices. Krabi is generally better for limestone scenery and a quieter base. Choose by style, and note that boat trips in both depend on the weather.

How many days should I spend in Bangkok?

Two days covers the Grand Palace, Wat Pho, Wat Arun, the river area and a market. Do not schedule the Grand Palace, Ayutthaya and a late airport transfer on the same day.

Can I add Ayutthaya to a 5-day trip?

It does not fit comfortably. Ayutthaya needs a full day and an early start, and it competes with the beach day. If it matters, extend to seven days.

What is the best time for this 5-day itinerary?

November to February is generally the most comfortable for Bangkok and the Andaman coast. Between May and October, expect showers and flexible boat plans, or consider the Gulf side for beaches.
