How to Reach Thailand

Quick answer

Most Indian travellers reach Thailand by air via Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK) in Bangkok. Nonstop flights run from Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, Bengaluru and Hyderabad, taking about two and a half to four and a half hours. Pune and Ahmedabad usually connect via Mumbai or Delhi. Check schedules for your date.

Facts checked 2 Nov 2026

Thailand is one of the shorter international trips from India. Bangkok is the main gateway, and most first itineraries start there. Some routes also reach Phuket, Chiang Mai, Koh Samui and Krabi depending on season and routing. This guide explains the airports, flight times and airlines from each Indian city, how to choose between Bangkok and a beach arrival, and how to get around Thailand once you land. Timings come from our destination research and are approximate, so confirm the schedule for your travel date.

How to reach Thailand at a glance

  • Main airport: Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK), Bangkok.
  • Other airports: Don Mueang (DMK), Phuket (HKT), Chiang Mai (CNX), Koh Samui (USM) and Krabi (KBV), depending on routing and season.
  • Shortest route: Kolkata, about two and a half hours.
  • Visa: currently a 30-day tourism exemption for Indian ordinary passports.
  • Time zone: UTC+7, one and a half hours ahead of India.

Which Indian cities have flights to Thailand?

  • Kolkata: about 2.5 hours, nonstop. Airlines may include IndiGo, Thai Airways and Thai AirAsia. A particularly efficient gateway for short Bangkok breaks.
  • Chennai: about 3.5 hours, nonstop. Airlines may include IndiGo and Thai Airways.
  • Mumbai: about 4 hours, nonstop. Airlines may include IndiGo, Thai Airways and Thai VietJet Air. Phuket options may be seasonal.

Depending on origin and date, direct services may also include Air India Express. Flight schedules change by season, so confirm before booking. Our packages are land-only, so flights are booked separately.

Should you arrive in Bangkok or at a beach airport?

Bangkok is usually the most flexible gateway for first-time itineraries, because it fits temples, markets and a later domestic flight. A direct Phuket flight can avoid a Bangkok backtrack for beach-only holidays, so compare both when you search. Ask your planner which fits your dates. Use an overnight Bangkok connection only when the fare saving outweighs the lost holiday time.

What should you check when booking flights?

  • Prefer a single-ticket itinerary for connections.
  • Avoid self-connecting on separate tickets during monsoon or peak-season disruption.
  • Leave a generous buffer when combining separate tickets with domestic Thailand flights.
  • Check return-day schedules, because frequency can vary seasonally.
  • Book early for December to February and Christmas and New Year.

How do you get around Thailand?

Bangkok uses the BTS Skytrain, MRT, taxis, ride-hailing and river boats. Intercity travel uses domestic flights, trains, coaches and ferries. Travellers say the BTS and MRT are generally more practical than taxis in heavy traffic, and they warn about tuk-tuk overcharging, so check prices first. Island and beach transport is more weather-dependent in the wet season, when some boat services run reduced schedules. Typical urban fares are THB 15 to 60 for rail, THB 40 to 150 for short taxi or ride-hailing trips and THB 600 to 1,500 for common island ferry transfers, depending on route and operator.

How do transfers work between Bangkok and the beaches?

Bangkok to Phuket or Krabi is usually a domestic flight, while Bangkok to Pattaya is a short road transfer. Domestic flights and ferries are not included in our packages unless the written quote says so. Plan the airport transfer on a separate day from major sightseeing, because Bangkok traffic makes the routing unreliable.

What documents do you need?

Carry a passport valid for at least six months, onward or return travel evidence, accommodation details and enough funds. Check the Thailand Digital Arrival Card requirement before you leave. Read the Thailand visa guide for Indians for details.

How was this guide compiled?

This guide is compiled from published tourism, weather and transport information and traveller reports about Thailand, and was last checked on 2 November 2026. Airline schedules and fares change often, so confirm every flight before you book.

FAQs

How to Reach Thailand: FAQs

Short answers to what travellers ask about Thailand.

Which airline flies directly from India to Thailand?

Depending on the origin and date, direct services may include IndiGo, Air India, Thai Airways, Thai AirAsia, Thai VietJet Air and Air India Express. Check the schedule for your city and travel date before booking.

How long is the flight from India to Bangkok?

Kolkata is shortest at about 2.5 hours, Chennai about 3.5, Mumbai, Bengaluru and Hyderabad about 4, and Delhi about 4.5. Pune and Ahmedabad take about 5.5 hours with a connection.

Are there direct flights from Pune and Ahmedabad?

Usually not. Pune and Ahmedabad connect via Mumbai or Delhi. A Mumbai-origin ticket may offer more schedule choice than a Pune connection, so compare both. Prefer a single-ticket itinerary for connections.

Should I fly to Bangkok or Phuket?

Bangkok is usually the most flexible gateway for first-time itineraries. A direct Phuket flight can avoid a Bangkok backtrack for beach holidays. Compare both for your dates, and note that Phuket options from some cities may be seasonal.

How do I get from Bangkok to Phuket or Krabi?

Usually by domestic flight. Pattaya is a short road transfer from Bangkok. Domestic flights, ferries and boat transfers are not included in our packages unless your written quote lists them, so ask when you request the quote.

What is the best way to move around Bangkok?

The BTS Skytrain and MRT are generally more practical than taxis in heavy traffic. Ride-hailing, taxis and river boats also work. Check tuk-tuk prices before you ride, as travellers report overcharging.

What documents do I need to enter Thailand?

Carry a passport valid for at least six months, onward or return travel evidence, accommodation details and sufficient funds. Check the Thailand Digital Arrival Card requirement before departure, and confirm the latest entry rules.

Is it safe to book separate tickets for connections?

It carries risk. Avoid self-connecting on separate tickets during monsoon or peak-season disruption, and leave a generous buffer when combining separate tickets with domestic flights. A single-ticket itinerary is safer for connections.
