Oman is a country on the eastern edge of the Arabian Peninsula, and for Indian travellers it is a compact trip with a lot of variety. Direct flights reach Muscat from Delhi, Mumbai and Bengaluru, taking about 2.75 to 4.5 hours. English is widely used in tourism, and the country offers old souks, forts, mountains, deserts and a coastline in one holiday. It suits first-time visitors, couples, families and friends who want a different kind of trip without long travel days.

A holiday is usually built around a few distinct areas. Muscat, the capital, holds the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque, Mutrah Souq and Mutrah Corniche. Nizwa is the gateway to the interior, with a historic fort and a traditional souq. The Al Hajar mountains, including Jebel Akhdar and Jebel Shams, offer cooler air and wide views. The Wahiba Sands provide dunes and desert camps, and the east coast has Wadi Shab, Bimmah Sinkhole and the Ras Al Jinz Turtle Reserve.

Five days covers Muscat, Nizwa, the mountains and one desert or coast excursion. Seven days is ideal for a balanced trip through Muscat, the interior, the desert and the east coast. Salalah, in the south, usually needs extra time or a domestic flight, and it is known for its khareef season from about June to September.

Our Oman packages are land-only, so flights and visa fees are booked separately. Our Muscat, Nizwa and Wahiba Sands 5-night package covers the capital, the interior and one desert night. Read the Oman travel guide for the full picture, and check the visa guide for Indians before you book. Travellers who want to combine Oman with the UAE can compare our Dubai tour packages.

Our verdict

October to March is the window most travellers aim for, and Oman's tourism authority describes September to March as the ideal period. November to February is the most comfortable, with daytime highs of about 31°C to 36°C. October and March are still hot, with highs near 40°C. May to August can reach 46°C to 47°C, so outdoor sightseeing is hard then. Salalah is the exception, with its khareef season from about June to September. See the full best time to visit Oman guide.

Day by day

Sample 6-day Oman itinerary

Based on our Oman Muscat & Wahiba Sands 5N package. Your trip expert can stretch or shorten any day.

  1. Day1

    Arrival in Muscat

Land at Muscat International Airport (MCT) and transfer to your hotel by private vehicle. Check in and rest after the flight. In the late afternoon, walk the Mutrah Corniche and browse Mutrah Souq, where the lanes and harbour views make an easy first evening. Keep the night light, because the next days cover a lot of ground.

    BreakfastNight in Muscat
  2. Day2

    Muscat: Grand Mosque and museums

Visit the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque in the morning, and check its visitor dress requirements before you leave the hotel. In the afternoon, choose one of Muscat's museums or spend time on the coastline. Return to the hotel to rest during the hottest hours, and enjoy grilled seafood by the water in the evening.

    BreakfastNight in Muscat
  3. Day3

Nizwa fort, souq and Jebel Akhdar

Drive inland to Nizwa, the gateway to Oman's interior, and visit its historic fort and traditional souq. Check locally whether the Friday livestock market applies to your visit, because its timing is fixed. In the afternoon, continue to Jebel Akhdar for cooler mountain air, villages, terraces and viewpoints. Wear a light layer, and return to Nizwa for the night.

    BreakfastNight in Nizwa
  4. Day4

Wahiba Sands dunes and desert camp

Drive from Nizwa to the Wahiba Sands. A 4WD transfer or an experienced desert operator takes you onto the dunes, which is the safest way to reach them. Spend the late afternoon on a sunset drive, with camel activities if you wish. Stay overnight at a desert camp, and pack a light layer for the evening.

    BreakfastNight in Wahiba Sands
  5. Day5

East coast: Wadi Shab and Bimmah Sinkhole

After breakfast, leave the desert and head for the coastal route toward Muscat. Walk into Wadi Shab, a canyon with pools, wearing footwear for uneven paths, and swim where conditions allow. Stop at Bimmah Sinkhole, a limestone depression with clear water. Wadis can flood after rain, so check conditions before you go. Return to Muscat for the night.

    BreakfastNight in Muscat
  6. Day6

    Departure from Muscat

Enjoy breakfast and check out. Your driver takes you to Muscat International Airport for departure, leaving enough time for check-in. If your flight is late in the day, use the morning for a last walk or shopping at Mutrah Souq. Confirm flight times with your planner in advance, so the transfer timing works.

Budget guide

How much does a Oman trip cost?

Four things move the cost of an Oman trip. Hotel category matters most, and luxury resorts cost more than budget hotels. Trip length comes next, because each extra night and each extra region adds driving and hotel nights. A 4WD vehicle for the dunes or mountain roads also adds cost. Finally, compare what each quote includes, since flights, visa fees and insurance are never part of our land packages. Read more in Oman trip cost.

Before you go

Visa and documents

Indian citizens generally need an Oman visa or eVisa unless they meet a specific exemption condition. Complete the Royal Oman Police eligibility wizard before you apply, and make sure your ordinary passport is valid for at least six months. Oman has also introduced a separate free 14-day tourist visa for designated nationalities. The sources reviewed did not confirm that Indian passport holders are included, so check before you rely on it. Visa assistance is included in our packages. See the Oman visa guide for Indians.

FAQs

Oman tour package FAQs

Quick answers to what travellers ask before booking a Oman trip. Ask your trip expert anything else.

How many days are enough for Oman?

Five days covers Muscat, Nizwa, the mountains and one desert or coast excursion. Seven days allows a more balanced route through Muscat, the interior, the desert and the east coast. Add extra time if you want Salalah, since it usually needs more days or a domestic flight.

Which Oman package suits a first visit?

Our five-night Muscat, Nizwa and Wahiba Sands package suits first-timers. It covers the Grand Mosque and Mutrah Souq, Nizwa's fort, Jebel Akhdar, a desert camp night and the Wadi Shab coast. For a longer or different route, our planners can customise an itinerary for you.

Do Indians need a visa for Oman?

Indian citizens generally need an Oman visa or eVisa unless they meet a specific exemption condition. Check the Royal Oman Police eVisa portal and Oman's Foreign Ministry guidance before you book, because visa categories have recently changed.

How can Indians travel to Oman?

Direct flights run to Muscat International Airport (MCT) from Delhi, Mumbai and Bengaluru. Approximate flight times are 3.5, 2.75 and 4.5 hours respectively, although schedules and airlines can change. Our packages do not include flights, so book them separately.

Is Oman safe for Indian tourists?

Oman is a structured destination for tourism. Follow local laws, respect religious customs, take care in extreme heat and avoid wadis during or after heavy rain. Check current government travel advice before you leave India.

What food can Indian travellers find in Oman?

Oman has Arabic, South Asian and international food, and Indian restaurants are common in major cities. Local dishes include shuwa, majboos, grilled seafood, dates and halwa, so you can try local food and still find familiar meals.

Is Oman suitable for families with children?

Yes. Muscat, beaches, forts, desert camps and selected wadis can work well for families. Avoid strenuous hikes and exposed desert activities in hot weather, and confirm swimming and access conditions before visiting any wadi. Plan shorter days for children, with rest in the middle of the day.

Do I need permits to drive to Oman's mountains or visit wadis?

Some mountain roads, including the access toward Jebel Akhdar, need a 4WD vehicle. This is a vehicle requirement, not a general tourist permit. Wadis and protected sites can have local rules, fees or booking requirements, so verify access with your planner before you travel.

Do your Oman packages include flights?

No. Our packages are land-only and cover the hotel, transfers, sightseeing and visa assistance in your itinerary. Flights and the visa fee are booked separately, and our planners can suggest suitable arrival and departure timings from your city.

When is the best time to take an Oman package?

November to February is the most comfortable window, with daytime highs of about 31°C to 36°C. October and March are still hot, with highs near 40°C, and May to August is very hot for daytime touring. Ask your planner to match the dates with the activities you want.
