Oman's weather decides which regions you can enjoy and when. In the cooler months, Muscat, Nizwa, the mountains and the desert all suit a full day of sightseeing. In the hottest months, outdoor touring is hard in most regions, and the mountains become the cooler choice. Salalah, in the south, follows its own pattern with the khareef season. This guide gives the month-by-month picture, so you can match your dates to the activities that matter most to you.
When is the best time to visit Oman?
Oman's tourism authority describes September to March as the ideal period for visiting, with typical conditions of about 25 to 30 degrees Celsius. In practice, November to February gives the most comfortable daytime temperatures for walking the souqs, climbing to mountain viewpoints and driving to the dunes. These months also see the highest visitor demand, so book early for the peak weeks.

What is the cooler season like?
From November to February, Muscat and Nizwa are at their most pleasant for walking and sightseeing. Daytime highs in January and December are around 31°C to 33°C, and nights are cool enough for a light layer, especially in the mountains. Rain is possible in January and February, and wadis can flood after heavy rain, so check conditions before you visit. Expect more visitors and higher prices, particularly for hotels in Muscat and at popular desert camps.
What about the shoulder months?
October, November and March are shoulder months for many travellers. October is still hot, with highs near 42°C, so plan the desert and the Grand Mosque for the morning and evening. November is warm and mostly dry, with highs of about 36°C, and it suits a balanced five- or seven-day trip. March can reach about 40°C, so it suits travellers who are comfortable in warm weather and want lower demand than in winter. These months often balance comfort and demand well.
Why is summer so hot?
From May to August, daytime highs reach about 46°C to 47°C in most regions, and the nights remain warm. Our weather data shows almost no rain in June and July. In this period, outdoor sightseeing is hard, and most travellers choose the mountains or Salalah instead. Plan any outdoor activity, including the desert drive and the Wadi Shab walk, for the first and last hours of the day, and keep midday for indoor visits and rest.
What is khareef in Salalah?
Salalah has its own seasonal pattern. The khareef season runs from about June to September, when the landscape is greener and visitor interest rises. Conditions are wetter, with mist and rain, so allow additional driving time on wet mountain roads. Salalah is a separate trip from the north and the east coast, and it usually needs extra time or a domestic flight, so check this when you choose your dates.
Which month suits your trip?
- Families: November to February, when days are comfortable for children and the outdoor activities are easier to plan.
- Couples and first-timers: November to February for the most comfortable touring, with October and March as slightly quieter options.
- Adventure travellers: November to March for the mountains, the dunes and the wadis, with careful timing and a 4WD vehicle.
- Budget-conscious travellers: May to September, when sightseeing demand is lower, but plan activities for early morning and evening.
