Getting to Oman from India is simple, because direct flights run to the capital from several major cities. Most trips start at Muscat International Airport, the main gateway for the country. From there, you travel by road to the regions you want to visit. Distances in Oman are longer than they look on a map, and some roads need a 4WD vehicle, so plan your transport as carefully as your flights. This guide explains the flights, the airport and the ways to get around.
Which flights go to Oman from India?
Direct flights are available from Delhi, Mumbai and Bengaluru. Approximate flight times are about 3.5 hours from Delhi, 2.75 hours from Mumbai and 4.5 hours from Bengaluru. Airlines on these routes include Air India Express, Oman Air and SalamAir. Schedules and airlines can change, so check your options before you book, and ask your planner for flight timings that suit your first and last day.
Which airport should you use?
Muscat International Airport (MCT) is the main airport for Oman and the usual arrival point for visitors. It is the airport our arrival and departure transfers are planned around, so confirm your flight times with your planner. Because the capital is the base for most trips, you can start sightseeing in Muscat soon after you land, if your flight timing allows it.
How do you get around once you land?
Visitors commonly use taxis, app-based or hotel-arranged cars, rental cars and private transfers. A rental car or driver is useful for Nizwa, the wadis, the deserts and the mountain areas, because public transport does not cover these places well. Our packages use private vehicles for airport transfers and sightseeing, so you do not need to arrange each journey yourself. If you plan to drive, check the licence rules and insurance with your rental company before you travel.
Do you need a 4WD vehicle?
Some mountain roads, including the access toward Jebel Akhdar, have a special 4WD requirement. This applies to the vehicle, not to a general tourist permit. The Wahiba Sands also need a 4WD transfer or an experienced desert operator for dune access. Confirm the vehicle with your planner before you book, especially if you want to drive yourself or reach a viewpoint by a mountain road.
How do you reach the regions?
Muscat is the starting point for most trips, and Nizwa is the gateway to the interior and the mountains. The Wahiba Sands are a desert region reached by road, and Wadi Shab and Bimmah Sinkhole are on the coastal route south of Muscat. Sur is a practical overnight base on the east coast, and the Ras Al Jinz Turtle Reserve is on that same route. Salalah in the south is a separate region, and it usually needs a domestic flight or extra time. Ask your planner to check the driving times between regions before you fix your itinerary.
Getting around by road
Driving times in the interior, the mountains and the desert can be longer than the distances suggest. Plan for daylight driving, carry water and fuel, and do not rely on phone signal in remote areas. Allow extra time for mountain roads, and avoid wadis during or after heavy rain. In the desert, follow the guidance of your operator and avoid driving on the sand without experience.
Which documents do you need to travel?
Indian citizens generally need an Oman visa or eVisa unless they meet a specific exemption condition. Your passport must be valid for at least six months. Oman's entry guidance also lists a return ticket, a confirmed hotel reservation, health insurance and sufficient funds for visa-exempt entry. Confirm your category on the Royal Oman Police eVisa portal, and read the Oman visa guide for Indians before you book your flights.
Time zone and arrival tips
Oman is on UTC+4, which is one and a half hours behind India. Check your flight times against local time, and allow time for immigration on arrival. Plan the first day lightly, because the transfer from the airport and the check-in can take longer than expected after a long flight.
How was this guide compiled?
This guide is compiled from published tourism, weather and transport information and traveller reports. It was last checked on 2 November 2026. Flight schedules, airlines and road conditions change, so confirm the details with your planner and the airline before you travel.
