The total cost of a trip to Oman depends on what you choose. The main cost drivers are where you stay, how many nights you spend in each region, whether you need a 4WD vehicle, and when you travel. This guide explains each driver in plain terms, so you can read a quote with confidence. We do not list a fixed price here, because the figures change with dates, hotels and vehicles.
What makes up an Oman trip budget?
A trip has several parts. Flights from India to Muscat are booked separately from our packages. Next comes accommodation, then transfers and vehicles, then sightseeing and entry fees, meals and personal spending. Visa fees and travel insurance are separate costs. When you compare options, list each part so that you can see the full picture rather than a headline figure.
Where you stay
Hotel category and area matter most. Oman's accommodation options range from budget hotels, guesthouses and simple apartments to luxury resorts and five-star hotels. Budget areas include Ruwi, Al Khuwair and Mutrah. Standard hotels are commonly found in Al Khuwair, Qurum, Seeb and Nizwa town. Premium stays are in areas such as Qurum, Shatti Al Qurum, the Muscat waterfront and the Nizwa outskirts. Luxury stays are in places such as Al Mouj, Shatti Al Qurum, the Muscat waterfront and Jebel Akhdar. A stay in the mountains or the desert changes the cost, because transfers and vehicles add to the total.
How meal plans change the cost
Meal basis changes the total more than many travellers expect. Budget hotels often offer room only or breakfast. Standard hotels usually include breakfast, with lunch and dinner at your own expense. Premium and luxury properties may offer breakfast, half-board or full-board, depending on the property. Check the meal basis on every quote, and compare like with like. Our packages include daily breakfast, and other meals are extra unless your itinerary says otherwise.
Trip length and the number of regions
Each extra night adds hotel and daily costs, and each extra region adds driving time. A five-day trip covers Muscat, Nizwa, the mountains and one desert or coast excursion. A seven-day trip spreads the same regions more comfortably, with more time in Wahiba Sands and the east coast. Salalah adds a separate leg, and often a domestic flight, so it changes the budget significantly. Ask your planner to show the nights in each region on the quote.
Vehicles and transfers
A 4WD vehicle is needed on some mountain roads, including the access toward Jebel Akhdar, and a 4WD transfer or an experienced desert operator is advised for dune access. Private transfers give you flexibility on timings. Rental cars and drivers are useful for Nizwa, the wadis and the deserts. Confirm whether the quote includes the vehicle type, driver, fuel and tolls, since these details vary.
Season and demand
The season changes both availability and rates. November to February is the peak season, with higher demand for hotels, desert camps and mountain stays. October and March are shoulder months, and summer, from May to August, usually has lower sightseeing demand. Book early for peak dates, and keep your dates flexible to compare value for the trip you have in mind.
Entry fees, activities and extras
Entry fees and activities not listed in the itinerary are extra. This includes visits to protected sites, the turtle viewing, desert camp extras and wadi access, where local rules or fees may apply. Ask whether any site or activity needs a timed booking, and whether the fee is included in your quote.
What our packages include and exclude
Our packages are land-only. They include daily breakfast, airport transfers, sightseeing by private vehicle as per the itinerary and visa assistance, plus the hotel or desert camp nights listed in your package. Flights to and from Muscat, the Oman visa fee, travel insurance, meals not listed, entry fees not listed, personal expenses and GST are not included. See the full details in our Oman Muscat & Wahiba Sands 5N package, which lists its route, inclusions and exclusions.
How to compare quotes
Compare quotes on the same number of nights, the same regions and the same meal basis. Check the hotel area and category, the vehicle type, the transfers, the entry fees and the exclusions. Ask whether the quote includes the visa assistance, and whether the visa fee is extra. A quote that looks cheaper may leave out the 4WD transfer, the desert camp or the breakfast, so read the inclusions line by line before you choose.
What to ask your planner
- Which hotel areas are included, and what category they are.
- Whether the quote includes breakfast only, or other meals too.
- Which vehicle is used for the mountain road and the dunes.
- Which entry fees and activities are included.
- Whether flights, the visa fee and insurance are extra.
- How much the quote changes for your dates and group size.
