Maldives travel guide
The main places to visit in the Maldives are Malé, Hulhumalé, Maafushi, Dhigurah, Baa Atoll, Ari Atoll and Addu City, plus private resort islands. For a first trip, pick one base: a resort island for privacy, or a local island such as Maafushi for lower cost. Four to five nights suit one base, and seven allow a split.

The Maldives is not a trip where you tick off many sights. Most of the experience happens at one island, in the lagoon and on the reef. The real planning question is where to base yourself, because transfers between atolls take time and money. This guide explains the main places, what each is good for, how long to allow and which suit couples, families, divers and budget travellers.
Malé is the compact capital. Visit the fish market, the Friday Mosque area (Hukuru Miskiy) and the National Museum, and stop at a local café. Most resort transfers leave from the airport area, so you do not need several nights here. Travellers who want a feel of local life often add one day before or after a resort stay. Skip long stays unless urban culture is a priority.
Hulhumalé is a convenient urban beach base near the airport. It has guesthouses, restaurants and a sunset promenade, and it works well for an arrival or departure night when you land late or leave early. Use it as a practical stop, not as a substitute for a private-island resort. If your international flight lands after dark and your resort uses a seaplane, a night here can solve the transfer problem.
Maafushi is a well-established local island with guesthouses, cafés and easy snorkelling, sandbank and dolphin trips. It is often the most practical budget base for a first visit. Travellers also report that it is heavily built up and that its designated bikini beach is small and busy. Alcohol and swimwear are restricted outside designated areas, so dress modestly. Reserve a buffer day before your flight, because excursion boats depend on weather. Our Maldives Budget Island Stay 3N is built around Maafushi.
Travellers who want a quieter local island often prefer Dhigurah, Thulusdhoo or Fulidhoo to Maafushi. Dhigurah has a long beach and good access to whale-shark and manta-ray excursions. Choose operators with responsible wildlife protocols, and do not expect guaranteed sightings. If you want real privacy, a resort island is the better choice.
Baa Atoll is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, known for manta rays, Hanifaru Bay and reef biodiversity. Access to Hanifaru is regulated and seasonal, so check local rules instead of assuming open snorkelling. Baa Atoll suits wildlife lovers and luxury travellers, and it usually needs a longer transfer than the atolls close to Malé. Allow about three nights.
Ari Atoll is one of the most convenient areas for reef diving, whale-shark excursions and resort stays. It is large, so confirm whether your property is in North or South Ari before you estimate transfer time. Divers and snorkellers tend to like it, and it suits a three-night add-on or a base for a longer stay.
Addu City is a southern atoll destination with cycling routes, WWII-era history, local culture and diving. Domestic-flight logistics make it better for a longer trip than for a short first resort package. It suits repeat visitors and travellers who want something other than a conventional resort holiday.
Resorts near Malé, in North and South Malé Atoll, keep transfers short and suit four- to five-night stays. South Ari Atoll offers reef access and diving. Baa Atoll, Noonu Atoll and North Malé Atoll hold much of the luxury market. A cheaper resort can cost more once seaplane or domestic transfers are added, so compare totals. Our Maldives Water Villa Honeymoon 4N, Maldives Family Resort 4N and Maldives Luxury 5N all use resort islands in the Malé atolls.
Fulhadhoo Beach, Dhigurah Beach, Hulhumalé Beach and Reethi Beach are often named among the beaches visitors like. Beach access differs by island, so ask whether your base has a swimming beach or only a designated area.

FAQs
Short answers to what travellers ask about Maldives.
Malé, Hulhumalé, Maafushi, Dhigurah, Baa Atoll, Ari Atoll and Addu City are the main places, along with private resort islands. For most first trips, one resort island or one local island is enough. Pick the base before the activities.
Maafushi is a practical budget base with guesthouses and easy excursions, though busy. A resort near Malé suits travellers who want privacy and short transfers. Dhigurah, Thulusdhoo and Fulidhoo suit those who want a quieter local island.
One day is usually enough for the fish market, the Friday Mosque area and a café stop. Do not plan several nights unless urban culture is your focus, because most resort transfers leave from the airport area.
It works for families who want low cost and easy boat trips, but it is busy and its bikini beach is small. Alcohol and swimwear rules apply on local islands. Many families prefer a resort with a shallow lagoon and a kids' club.
Baa Atoll and Hanifaru Bay are known for manta rays, and Dhigurah and Ari Atoll offer manta and whale-shark excursions. Access to Hanifaru is regulated and seasonal, and sightings are never guaranteed. Choose responsible operators.
Yes. Travellers often start on a local island such as Maafushi and then move to a resort, or the other way round. Seven nights allow this comfortably. Allow for transfer time and keep a buffer before your flight home.
Not usually. Domestic-flight logistics make Addu City better for a longer trip. It offers cycling, WWII-era history, local culture and diving, so it suits repeat visitors more than first-time resort travellers.
It depends on your priorities. Resorts offer privacy, overwater villas and house reefs at higher cost. Local islands cost less and show everyday island life, with limits on alcohol and swimwear. A split stay gives you both.
