Maldives travel guide
A 5-day Maldives itinerary suits one resort island: arrive and transfer, spend a lagoon and beach day, snorkel or try an introductory dive, add one marine excursion or spa day, then leave after a leisure morning. Five days is a good length for a first resort stay. Avoid changing islands unless transfers are very close.

Land at Velana International Airport and meet your resort representative. Transfer by speedboat or seaplane, depending on your resort. Check in to your water villa and settle in. Have dinner at the resort. Seaplanes do not fly after dark, so your arrival time decides the transfer, and we confirm this when we quote.
Start with breakfast on your villa deck or at the restaurant. The day is open for the lagoon, the beach and the villa's private deck. You can add a couples' spa treatment, which the resort books and charges separately. Dinner is at the resort.
Spend the morning snorkelling on the resort's house reef, where many properties offer direct reef access. In the late afternoon, join a sunset cruise on the lagoon. Conditions depend on the weather, so the resort may move the cruise to another evening.
Keep today unplanned. Swim, rest or try a non-motorised water sport at the resort. If you want a private sandbank picnic, ask us to add it, and the resort arranges it for a suitable day. Enjoy a final dinner at the resort.
Have breakfast and check out. Your resort transfer by speedboat or seaplane takes you back to Velana International Airport. Seaplanes operate in daylight only, so we match your flight time to the transfer window before you book flights.
Five days is a good length for a first Maldives resort stay. It gives you a transfer day at each end and three days on the island, enough for the beach, the reef, one marine excursion and rest. This plan keeps one base, spaces the activities out and leaves room for weather. It also explains what to choose and what to skip.
It suits couples, families and friends on a first visit who want a resort stay without a long schedule. It is the length behind our Maldives Water Villa Honeymoon 4N and Maldives Family Resort 4N. If you want more variety, the 7-day Maldives itinerary adds room for a split stay.
Land at Velana International Airport and meet your resort representative. The transfer is by speedboat, seaplane or a domestic flight plus speedboat, depending on the resort. Check in, rest and have dinner. Seaplanes fly in daylight only, so a late arrival may need another plan. Confirm the transfer window before you book flights.
Use the second day to enjoy the lagoon. Swim, walk the beach and settle into the resort's rhythm. If you have a water villa, spend time on the deck. This day also lets you check the weather and boat conditions before you commit to activities. Families can check lagoon depth and kids' club hours.
Snorkel the house reef in the morning, when the water is usually calm. If you want more, try an introductory dive, which many resorts offer. Stay with a guide, particularly if you are new to the water. Keep the afternoon free. Reef conditions vary with weather, so ask the dive centre each morning.
Pick one marine excursion: a sunset cruise, a dolphin trip, or a sandbank visit. Or choose a spa treatment or non-motorised water sports. This is the day to add something special, such as a private sandbank picnic. Travellers often rearrange this day once they see the weather, so stay flexible.
Enjoy a slow breakfast and a last swim, then check out and take the departure transfer to Velana International Airport. Seaplanes fly in daylight only, so your flight time must match the transfer window. Allow a comfortable buffer, especially in the monsoon months.
Changing islands unless the transfers are very close. Each move adds a transfer, cost and weather risk, and five days does not give you time to enjoy two bases.
December to April is generally driest and sunniest, and best for reliable excursions. May to October is the wetter monsoon with lower prices, so keep slack. See the best time to visit the Maldives and the Maldives trip cost guide.

FAQs
Short answers to what travellers ask about Maldives.
Yes. Five days is a good length for a first resort stay, with a day at each end for transfers and three days on the island. It fits the beach, the reef and one marine excursion.
Not unless the transfers are very close. Each change adds time, cost and weather risk. Stay on one resort island and use excursions for variety.
Use one day for the lagoon and beach, one for snorkelling or an introductory dive, and one for an excursion, spa or water sports. Keep the plan flexible, because weather can move boat trips.
Yes. A local island such as Maafushi works with boat excursions for snorkelling and sandbanks. Expect a busier setting, and alcohol and swimwear limits apply. Choose a resort if you want privacy.
A speedboat suits resorts close to Malé and costs less. A seaplane suits distant resorts but costs more and flies in daylight only. Ask for transfer cost and timing before you compare resorts.
Yes, if the resort has a shallow lagoon, a kids' club and a short transfer. Check age limits and villa safety. The calm months from January to April suit children's swimming best.
