Maldives travel guide
A 3-day Maldives itinerary works only as a short break at one nearby resort or local island: arrive and settle in, snorkel the house reef and take a sunset cruise, then leave after breakfast. Skip remote atolls and island changes. Three days is tight, because the transfers take a large share of the time.

Land at Velana International Airport and meet your resort representative. Transfer by speedboat or seaplane, depending on your resort. Check in to your water villa and settle in. Have dinner at the resort. Seaplanes do not fly after dark, so your arrival time decides the transfer, and we confirm this when we quote.
Start with breakfast on your villa deck or at the restaurant. The day is open for the lagoon, the beach and the villa's private deck. You can add a couples' spa treatment, which the resort books and charges separately. Dinner is at the resort.
Spend the morning snorkelling on the resort's house reef, where many properties offer direct reef access. In the late afternoon, join a sunset cruise on the lagoon. Conditions depend on the weather, so the resort may move the cruise to another evening.
Keep today unplanned. Swim, rest or try a non-motorised water sport at the resort. If you want a private sandbank picnic, ask us to add it, and the resort arranges it for a suitable day. Enjoy a final dinner at the resort.
Have breakfast and check out. Your resort transfer by speedboat or seaplane takes you back to Velana International Airport. Seaplanes operate in daylight only, so we match your flight time to the transfer window before you book flights.
Three days is a tight length for the Maldives. The transfer from Velana International Airport takes part of the first and last days, so you get one full day on the island. It works if you choose one base close to Malé, keep expectations modest and match your flight times to the transfer. This plan shows how to use the time and what to leave out.
It suits travellers with limited leave, first-time visitors who want a taste of the islands and couples on a short break. It is less suited to families with small children, because transfers tire them, and to travellers who want diving or wildlife trips. If you can spare more time, a 5-day Maldives itinerary gives a better balance.
Land at Velana International Airport and move on to your island. A resort near Malé usually means a short speedboat. A local island such as Maafushi uses a speedboat or ferry. Check in, rest and keep the evening light. If your flight lands after dark, ask whether your transfer still runs, because seaplanes fly in daylight only. An arrival night in Hulhumalé is a sensible fallback.
This is your one full day. Snorkel the house reef in the morning, when the lagoon is usually calmer. On a local island, join a boat excursion instead. Rest in the afternoon, then take a sunset or lagoon cruise. Weather can move boat trips, so leave the evening flexible. This single day is why a nearby base matters.
Have a slow breakfast and keep the morning light, with a swim or a short walk. Then take the departure transfer to Velana International Airport. Plan your flight for the afternoon or evening where you can, because boats can be delayed in rough weather. Travellers advise against a very early flight home after a local-island stay.
A resort in North or South Malé Atoll keeps transfers short. A local island such as Maafushi keeps cost down and has easy snorkelling trips. Our Maldives Budget Island Stay 3N uses Maafushi for three nights. If you prefer a resort, the Maldives Water Villa Honeymoon 4N adds one more night for a calmer pace.
December to April is generally driest and sunniest, which makes a short trip more reliable. In the monsoon months, boats and seaplanes may be delayed, and a short trip has little slack. Read the best time to visit the Maldives before you pick dates.

FAQs
Short answers to what travellers ask about Maldives.
Three days is tight. It works for one nearby resort or local island, with one full day for the house reef and a sunset cruise. For a slower holiday or more than one activity, choose five or seven days.
A resort near Malé keeps transfers short and gives privacy. A local island such as Maafushi costs less and has easy snorkelling trips. Choose based on budget and how much you value quiet.
It is not advisable. Each island change adds a transfer and weather risk, which uses up scarce time. Stay on one island and use boat excursions from there.
Arrive in daylight if your resort uses a seaplane, and leave in the afternoon or evening after a local-island stay. Seaplanes fly in daylight only, and boats can be delayed. Match flights to the transfer.
Snorkel the house reef in the morning and take a sunset or lagoon cruise in the evening. Keep the afternoon free for rest. Weather may move boat trips, so leave some slack.
The total is lower, but the cost per night is often higher, because transfers are a big part of the price. Ask for a quote that shows the transfer, meals and nights, and compare totals.
