Turkey is large, and its weather changes with altitude and with the coast. The figures in this guide are typical monthly averages for the country, drawn from our research. They show a clear pattern. Spring and autumn suit sightseeing, summer suits the beaches but is very hot, and winter is quiet and damp. This guide explains each season and helps you pick the months that fit your trip.
When is the best time to visit Turkey?
Most travellers find April to May and September to October the most comfortable. Days are warm without being hot, and the cities and sites are easier to enjoy on foot. Istanbul, Cappadocia, Ephesus and Pamukkale all work well in these months. These are also the months when demand rises, so book hotels and balloon flights early.
Turkey month by month
- January: about 3°C to 9°C, around 85 mm of rain. Cold and wet in Istanbul, with snow inland. Low season.
- February: about 3°C to 10°C, around 70 mm of rain. Cool, with occasional rain and snow inland. Low season.
- March: about 5°C to 12°C, around 60 mm of rain. Changeable, but good for city sightseeing with fewer visitors.
- April: about 9°C to 17°C, around 45 mm of rain. Mild and strong for Istanbul, Cappadocia and heritage sites. Tulips bloom in Istanbul.
- May: about 13°C to 22°C, around 35 mm of rain. Warm and generally comfortable, and one of the strongest months for touring.
- June: about 17°C to 27°C, around 25 mm of rain. Warm to hot, and excellent for coast and outdoor activities before the peak heat.
- July: about 20°C to 30°C, around 20 mm of rain. Hot and busy, with peak beach season and higher prices.
- August: about 21°C to 30°C, around 20 mm of rain. Very hot on the coast and busy. Cappadocia mornings remain favourable for balloon flights.
- September: about 18°C to 27°C, around 30 mm of rain. Warm, less oppressive, and good for the coast, Istanbul and inland sites.
- October: about 13°C to 21°C, around 55 mm of rain. Pleasant early autumn, with cooler evenings.
- November: about 9°C to 15°C, around 80 mm of rain. Cool and wetter, suited to cultural touring with fewer visitors.
- December: about 5°C to 10°C, around 90 mm of rain. Cold and wet in Istanbul, with winter conditions inland. Low season.
Spring: April and May
Spring is the easiest season for a first trip. April has the mildest days, with highs near 17°C, and the tulips in Istanbul add colour to the city. May warms up to highs near 22°C, and the days are long enough for a full sightseeing schedule. Rain is moderate in both months, at around 35 to 45 mm. Hotels in Cappadocia fill up, so reserve a cave room and a balloon slot early.
Summer: June to August
Summer suits beach holidays. June is still warm enough for sightseeing in the morning, with highs near 27°C. July and August bring highs near 30°C, and the Mediterranean and Aegean coasts are busy with holiday crowds. Travellers often say that summer heat makes sightseeing tiring, especially in Istanbul, Pamukkale and Cappadocia. Plan outdoor visits for early morning, carry water and rest in the afternoon.
Autumn: September and October
Autumn is another strong season. September is warm, with highs near 27°C, and it is less oppressive than midsummer. The coasts, Istanbul and the inland sites are all comfortable. October is cooler, with highs near 21°C and cooler evenings, and it suits city sightseeing and a relaxed pace. Rain increases in October, so pack a light rain layer.
Winter: November to March
Winter is the quietest season. Istanbul is cold and wet from December to February, and snow is possible in the interior. Balloon flights in Cappadocia can be cancelled by fog or poor weather, which travellers often mention as a disappointment. Winter does offer lower prices and fewer visitors. Some regions have winter sports, and Turkey has established ski areas, though snow is not the focus of most first trips.
Which months suit families and honeymooners?
Families often prefer April, May, June, September and October. These months give enough warmth for outdoor sightseeing without the extreme heat of July and August, and they allow two- or three-night bases with heat breaks. Honeymooners often pick April, May, September and October, because the Cappadocia cave stays and the Bosphorus evenings are at their most comfortable then.
Balloon flights and the weather
Cappadocia balloon flights depend on wind and visibility. Summer mornings in Cappadocia remain favourable for flights, but fog and wind can cancel a booking at short notice. Keep one spare morning in your plan, and do not book a long transfer for the same day as the flight.
