About Switzerland

  • Our packages6 to 8 nights
  • Best timeMay to Oct
  • Visa for IndiansVisa required

Switzerland is an Alpine, landlocked country in Central Europe with four national languages: German, French, Italian and Romansh. For Indian travellers it is one of the easiest European countries to tour by train. The rail network links cities, lakeside towns and many mountain gateways, and English is widely understood in major tourist areas. Delhi and Mumbai have nonstop flights to Zurich.

A first trip is made of a few clear areas. Zurich is the usual arrival gateway, with a historic old town and Lake Zurich. Lucerne is a compact lakeside city with Chapel Bridge and Mount Pilatus. Interlaken is the practical base for Jungfraujoch, Lauterbrunnen and Grindelwald. Zermatt, a car-free resort, brings the Matterhorn, while Montreux and Bern add French-speaking Switzerland and a UNESCO-listed old town.

Switzerland is among the most expensive countries in Europe, and mountain views depend on the weather. Good planning therefore matters more than cramming in places. Travellers often say that fitting too many mountains into a short trip is the common mistake, so we plan one major excursion a day and keep a spare day where it helps.

Choose from Swiss Alps Classic 6N, Switzerland Honeymoon 7N, Switzerland Family 7N and Glacier Express Scenic Rail 8N, or ask us to customise one. Every quote lists exactly what is included. Our verdict

June and September are generally the best balance of weather, access and crowds, with early October also working well. May to October suits sightseeing and hiking, and some high lifts and trails may still be seasonal in May. July and August are warmest but busier and costlier. December to March is the season for reliable snow. Read the full best time to visit Switzerland guide.

Day by day

Sample 7-day Switzerland itinerary

Based on our Swiss Alps Classic 6N package. Your trip expert can stretch or shorten any day.

  1. Day1

Arrival in Zurich and transfer to Lucerne

Land at Zurich Airport (ZRH) and meet your representative for the transfer. Ride the train to Lucerne and check in near the station or old town. If time allows, take a short walk to the lakefront and Chapel Bridge to get your bearings. Keep the first day light, because the long flight from India is tiring. Swiss trains are frequent, but a morning arrival gives you the most time to settle in.

    BreakfastNight in Lucerne
  2. Day2

    Lucerne and a mountain excursion

Start with Lucerne's old town and Chapel Bridge, then head up a mountain from the city. Mount Pilatus and Mount Titlis are the usual choices, and your planner picks one with you. Check the webcam before you go up, because cloud can hide the view. Return to Lucerne for the evening by the lake.

    BreakfastNight in Lucerne
  3. Day3

    Scenic transfer to Interlaken

Leave Lucerne by train on a scenic route to Interlaken, which sits between two lakes. The town is your base for the Jungfrau region, so treat it as a place to sleep rather than the main sight. Spend the afternoon at an easy pace and rest before the early start tomorrow.

    BreakfastNight in Interlaken
  4. Day4

    Jungfraujoch

Travel up to Jungfraujoch, Europe's highest railway station at 3,454 metres. The route takes about 1 hour 30 minutes via the Eiger Express or 2 hours 10 minutes by the traditional route. At the top you can see the Sphinx, the Ice Palace and views toward the Aletsch Glacier. Carry warm layers, even in summer, and check visibility first.

    BreakfastNight in Interlaken
  5. Day5

    Lauterbrunnen and Grindelwald

Spend a lower-altitude day in the Jungfrau region. Visit Lauterbrunnen Valley, known for its waterfalls, and the village of Grindelwald. Walk at your own pace between viewpoints and cafes. This day also works as a weather backup if Jungfraujoch was cloudy and your planner can swap the two.

    BreakfastNight in Interlaken
  6. Day6

    Bern and Zurich

Travel by train toward Zurich and stop in Bern. The medieval old town is UNESCO-listed, with arcades and fountains, and a half day is enough. Continue to Zurich in the afternoon and check in. Use the evening for a stroll along Lake Zurich or through the old town.

    BreakfastNight in Zurich
  7. Day7

    Departure from Zurich

Enjoy breakfast and check out. If your flight is later in the day, take a last walk by Lake Zurich or through the old town. You are transferred to Zurich Airport (ZRH) for departure, leaving enough time for check-in.

Budget guide

How much does a Switzerland trip cost?

Starting prices of our packages, per person on twin sharing, excl. GST and flights.

Several things move the price of a Switzerland trip. Hotel location and category matter, as do the number of nights and the season, because July and August and Christmas to New Year are peak. Mountain excursions such as Jungfraujoch and Gornergrat add cost, and so does a Swiss Travel Pass or extra scenic rail. Private transfers also raise the total. Flights are not included in our packages. See Switzerland trip cost.

FAQs

Switzerland tour package FAQs

Quick answers to what travellers ask before booking a Switzerland trip. Ask your trip expert anything else.

How many days are enough for Switzerland?

Seven days covers Zurich, Lucerne, Interlaken and one major mountain excursion at a steady pace. Ten to fourteen days allows Zermatt, western Switzerland and a slower rhythm. Three days is tight and works only for Lucerne and one mountain.

What is the best time to visit Switzerland?

June, September and early October are strong choices for sightseeing and scenic rail, with mild weather and good access. July and August are warmest but busier. December to March is the best season for snow sports. Some high lifts may still be seasonal in May.

Do Indians need a visa for Switzerland?

Yes. Indian ordinary-passport holders need a Schengen type C visa for tourism, valid for short stays of up to 90 days in any 180-day period. We offer visa assistance, but the visa fee is separate. Apply well ahead of travel, because appointments can fill up.

Is Switzerland expensive for Indian tourists?

Yes. Hotels, rail, mountain excursions and restaurant meals cost more than in India and in much of Europe. Advance reservations, a comparison of rail passes with point-to-point tickets and travel outside July and August can help control the total.

Which places should I visit on a first trip?

Common first-trip stops are Zurich, Lucerne, Interlaken, Jungfraujoch, Zermatt, Bern and Montreux. Seven days usually covers the first three plus Jungfraujoch. Add Zermatt and Montreux when you have ten days or more. Our planners match the route to your dates.

Do your Switzerland packages include flights?

No. Our packages are land-only and cover the hotels, transfers and sightseeing agreed in your itinerary. Flights are booked separately. Visa assistance is included, but the visa fee and travel insurance are separate unless your itinerary says otherwise.

Can I travel around Switzerland by train?

Yes. The rail network is extensive and connects major cities, lakeside towns and many mountain gateways, with Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) as the principal operator. Scenic trains may need separate seat reservations, so we confirm those in your quote.

Is Switzerland good for a honeymoon?

Yes. Lake stays, panoramic trains, Matterhorn views, Alpine resorts and spa hotels suit couples, especially in June, September and the winter snow months. See our [Switzerland honeymoon package](/packages/switzerland-honeymoon-7n/) for a gentle seven-night route.

What is the currency in Switzerland?

The currency is the Swiss franc (CHF). Some tourist businesses accept euros, but paying in francs or by card usually gives better control over the exchange rate. Travellers also suggest carrying some francs, because some mountain huts may not take cards.

How far in advance should I book a Switzerland package?

Book early for July and August, Christmas to New Year and school holidays, when mountain excursions and central hotels fill up. Allow extra time for the Schengen visa. Ask your planner for a written quote with every inclusion listed before you pay.
