About this trip

Glacier Express Scenic Rail 8N is for travellers who want the train to be part of the trip. Switzerland has a dense network of panoramic routes, including the Glacier Express, Bernina Express, GoldenPass and Gotthard Panorama routes. This plan uses rail to link Lucerne, Interlaken and Zermatt over eight nights.

You spend two nights in Lucerne, three in Interlaken and three in Zermatt. The days include a Lucerne mountain excursion, Jungfraujoch, Lauterbrunnen and Grindelwald, a scenic-rail journey toward Zermatt, and Gornergrat or Matterhorn Glacier Paradise. Your planner confirms the exact scenic sector and seat reservation, because reservations are separate from a rail pass.

The package covers hotels on twin sharing with daily breakfast, airport and rail transfers, the listed excursions and visa assistance. Flights, the Schengen visa fee, insurance, other meals and extra rail reservations are extra. It suits June to October most. Read our Switzerland travel guide, how to reach Switzerland and things to do for planning.

  • A mountain excursion from Lucerne
  • Jungfraujoch at 3,454 metres, reached by rail
  • A scenic-rail journey toward car-free Zermatt
  • Gornergrat or Matterhorn Glacier Paradise, with Matterhorn views
  • Lauterbrunnen and Grindelwald in the Jungfrau region

Day-by-day itinerary

Your trip expert can stretch, shorten or swap any day.

  1. Day 1: Arrival in Zurich and transfer to Lucerne

Land at Zurich Airport (ZRH) and meet your representative for the transfer. Ride the train to Lucerne and check in near the station or old town. Take a short walk to the lakefront and Chapel Bridge. Keep the evening light, as the trip is rail-heavy and each day has a train to catch. Keep the first day light, because the long flight from India is tiring. Swiss trains are frequent, but a morning arrival gives you the most time to settle in.

    BreakfastNight in Lucerne
  2. Day 2: Lucerne and a mountain excursion

See Lucerne's old town and Chapel Bridge, then head up Mount Pilatus or Mount Rigi, depending on the weather and your planner's advice. Check the webcam before you go. Return to Lucerne for an evening by the lake and an early night.

    BreakfastNight in Lucerne
  3. Day 3: Scenic rail to Interlaken

Leave Lucerne by train on a scenic route to Interlaken. Check in and spend the afternoon at leisure between the two lakes. Interlaken is your base for the Jungfrau region, so rest well before tomorrow's early start for the high mountain.

    BreakfastNight in Interlaken
  4. Day 4: Jungfraujoch

Travel up to Jungfraujoch, Europe's highest railway station at 3,454 metres. The route takes about 1 hour 30 minutes via the Eiger Express or 2 hours 10 minutes by the traditional route. See the Sphinx, the Ice Palace and views toward the Aletsch Glacier. Carry warm layers and check visibility first.

    BreakfastNight in Interlaken
  5. Day 5: Lauterbrunnen and Grindelwald

Spend a lower-altitude day in the Jungfrau region. Visit Lauterbrunnen Valley, known for its waterfalls, and the village of Grindelwald. Take the trains and cable cars between viewpoints at your own pace. Your planner can swap this day with Jungfraujoch if cloud covers the summit.

    BreakfastNight in Interlaken
  6. Day 6: Scenic rail to Zermatt

Spend the day on a panoramic rail journey toward Zermatt, a car-free alpine resort. Switzerland is known for routes such as the Glacier Express, and your planner confirms the exact sector and seat reservation, since reservations are separate from a Swiss Travel Pass. Arrive, check in and walk the village.

    BreakfastNight in Zermatt
  7. Day 7: Gornergrat

Take the mountain railway to Gornergrat for classic Matterhorn viewpoints. Check the webcam before you go, because Matterhorn visibility can be poor and the ticket is costly. Carry warm layers. Return to Zermatt in the afternoon for a slow evening.

    BreakfastNight in Zermatt
  8. Day 8: Matterhorn Glacier Paradise or a flexible day

Use this day for Matterhorn Glacier Paradise or a hike, depending on conditions. It also acts as a weather buffer, so you can retry the Matterhorn view if the first day was cloudy. Zermatt has extensive mountain transport, and your planner adjusts the plan the evening before.

    BreakfastNight in Zermatt
  9. Day 9: Zermatt to Zurich and departure

Enjoy breakfast and check out. Travel by train from Zermatt to Zurich, which takes a full travel day, so confirm your flight timing with your planner and choose an evening departure. You are transferred to Zurich Airport (ZRH) for departure.

FAQs

Glacier Express Scenic Rail 8N: FAQs

What travellers ask about this trip. Your trip expert can answer anything else.

Does this package include the Glacier Express?

It includes one scenic-rail sector with a seat reservation, and your planner confirms which sector fits your dates. Scenic-train reservations are separate from a Swiss Travel Pass, so we list the exact route and reservation in your written quote.

What does the scenic rail package include?

It includes eight nights in comfort-category hotels on twin sharing, daily breakfast, airport and rail transfers, the listed excursions, one scenic-rail sector with reservation and visa assistance. Flights, the visa fee, insurance, other meals and extras are not included.

Is eight nights enough for Lucerne, Interlaken and Zermatt?

Yes, at a steady pace. Travellers warn against fitting Zermatt, Jungfrau and Titlis into two days. This plan gives each area its own nights, with one flexible day in Zermatt in case clouds hide the Matterhorn.

Does the package include flights?

No. Our packages are land-only, so flights are booked separately. Delhi and Mumbai have nonstop flights to Zurich, and other Indian cities usually need one stop. Choose an evening departure for the last day, which is a long rail journey.

Can I use a Swiss Travel Pass instead?

A pass can help on multi-city routes, but it is not always cheaper, and it does not cover every cable car or scenic-train reservation in full. Your planner compares it with point-to-point fares for this exact route.

When is the best time for this package?

June, September and early October offer a good balance of weather, access and crowds. July and August are warmer but busier. Some high-altitude lifts and trails may still be seasonal in May, so check operating dates.
