Reaching Switzerland from India is straightforward, but your departure city decides how long the journey takes. Delhi and Mumbai have nonstop flights to Zurich, while most other cities need one stop. Once you land, Switzerland's rail network makes onward travel simple. This guide covers flight times, airports, routing tips, the entry visa and getting around after arrival. Flights are not included in our land-only packages, so you book them separately.
Which airport should you fly into?
Zurich Airport (ZRH) is the main gateway for most international itineraries and the most convenient for onward rail travel across Switzerland. Geneva Airport (GVA) is useful if your trip starts in western Switzerland. Some itineraries use Basel (BSL), depending on routing and airline connections. Check whether your fare arrives at Zurich or Geneva before comparing total costs, because a cheaper fare to the wrong airport can add transfer time.
How long is the flight from India?
These are typical journey times from facts we hold, and they vary by winds, routing and connection length.
- Mumbai: about 9 hours, nonstop to Zurich with Swiss International Air Lines. Confirm operating dates and the seasonal timetable.
- Delhi: about 9.5 hours, nonstop to Zurich with Swiss International Air Lines.
- Bengaluru: about 12 hours, one stop via Frankfurt, Doha, Dubai or Abu Dhabi.
- Hyderabad: about 12 hours, one stop via a Gulf hub or Frankfurt or Munich.
- Chennai: about 12.5 hours, usually one stop.
- Pune: about 12.5 hours, often via Mumbai or a one-stop itinerary.
- Ahmedabad: about 12.5 hours, one stop via Dubai, Doha, Abu Dhabi or Istanbul.
- Kolkata: about 13.5 hours, one stop via Doha, Dubai, Singapore or Frankfurt.
Longer total journeys make a longer itinerary more comfortable than a short break, especially from Kolkata.
What should you know about connections?
Travellers report booking short flight connections as a common mistake. Immigration and baggage recheck rules vary by itinerary, so avoid tight connections. A protected single-ticket connection is preferable to separate tickets, because missed-connection protection matters on long journeys. Choose a hub based on connection time rather than headline fare, and compare total elapsed time and baggage allowance.
How do you get from the airport to your hotel?
Zurich Airport connects to the rail network, and trains continue to Lucerne and Interlaken. A morning arrival gives better same-day connections to Lucerne or Interlaken. Use Zurich for central and eastern circuits, and compare Geneva only if you start in western Switzerland. In our packages, airport arrival and departure transfers are included. Private transfers can be requested as an upgrade.
How does onward travel work?
Swiss Federal Railways (SBB), regional trains, trams, buses, lake boats, mountain railways and cable cars provide extensive coverage. A Swiss Travel Pass can help for multi-city sightseeing, but point-to-point tickets may be cheaper for a compact route. Scenic trains may need separate seat reservations. Allow transfer time when planning, because travellers often underestimate it, and note last-train times on mountain routes.
What visa do you need?
Indian ordinary-passport holders need a Schengen type C visa for tourism, valid for short stays of up to 90 days in any 180-day period. Apply well ahead of travel. See our Switzerland visa guide for Indians for what is known and what to confirm.
What documents and money should you carry?
Carry your passport, visa, travel insurance details, hotel confirmations and rail or excursion reservations. Carry some Swiss francs for small shops and mountain huts that may not take cards. Euros may get poor exchange rates. Buy snacks beforehand if you arrive on a weekend, because small shops can close on Sundays.
What is the best way to plan arrival and departure?
Use Zurich as an arrival and departure base rather than spending long there if your trip is built around the Alps. A seven-night itinerary is more comfortable than a short break when the journey is long. Our Swiss Alps Classic 6N starts in Zurich and ends there, and the Glacier Express Scenic Rail 8N ends with a long rail day, so choose an evening flight.
Can you combine Switzerland with other countries?
Switzerland is in Central Europe and pairs with neighbouring countries. If you plan a wider trip, see our Italy, France and Germany and Austria pages, or the Europe multi-country packages. Check Schengen rules and your visa validity before you add stops.
How was this guide compiled?
This guide is compiled from published tourism, weather and transport information and from traveller reports. It was last checked on 2 November 2026. Flight schedules, airlines and routing change by season, so confirm current timetables with the airline before you book.
