Switzerland has two main travel seasons: a summer season for lakes, scenic rail and hiking, and a winter season for snow. The months between them are quieter, and some resorts and mountain lifts close or run on limited schedules. Your best month depends on whether you want green valleys, long days, clear alpine views or snow, and on how much you want to spend.
What is the best time to visit Switzerland?
For most first-time visitors, late May to June and September are the strongest choices. Weather is mild, valleys are green or turning gold, and many attractions are open. For hiking and lake activities, June to September is ideal. For skiing and snow, December to March is the season. June, September and early October are good for scenic rail and sightseeing.

Is summer a good time to go?
June has long days and strong conditions for scenic rail, lakes and hiking, though afternoon showers are common. July is the warmest month, with the best access to alpine attractions but higher prices and crowds. August is peak summer, with excellent outdoor access, busy resorts and frequent thunderstorms. Book mountain excursions and central hotels early for both months.
Why is September often recommended?
September combines mild weather, clearer alpine views and fewer crowds than July and August. Highs are around 21°C and lows around 12°C. It is a good month for mixed itineraries that pair cities, lakes and a mountain or two. Rainfall is lower than in June and August, though mountain weather can still change quickly.
What about spring and autumn?
March is a shoulder month for mixed itineraries, with late winter in the Alps and early spring in cities. April is unsettled. Lower-altitude sightseeing improves, while mountain conditions remain variable. May brings green landscapes, but some high-altitude lifts and trails may still be seasonal, and some guides note resort closures between the ski and summer seasons, especially April to June. Check operating dates before booking mountain stays.
Travellers from India report that late April and early May can be underestimated. Conditions change, and excursions depend heavily on visibility, although Jungfraujoch and Schilthorn were still visited. October offers autumn colours and quieter cities, but high-altitude weather can change quickly. November is low season in many areas, with grey, damp conditions and limited mountain operations. It is also budget-friendlier.
When is the best time for snow?
December to March is the reliable alpine snow season. January and February are cold, with snow in the Alps. January has short daylight and suits skiing more than broad sightseeing. December brings Christmas markets and ski resorts, but snow is less dependable at low elevations. Late November and December create city-level peaks around the Christmas markets.
Which month suits which traveller?
- Honeymooners: June, September and December to March.
- Families: June to September, with warm clothing for summit visits.
- Hikers and lake lovers: June to September.
- Scenic rail fans: June to October.
- Budget-conscious travellers: April to May or October to November, with the trade-offs above.
- Snow seekers: December to March.
How does season affect cost and booking?
July and August have the highest demand for hiking, lakes and mountain railways. December to March concentrates demand in ski resorts, and Christmas to New Year and school holidays are peaks. Lock mountain excursions and well-located hotels before those periods. See the Switzerland trip cost guide for what moves the price.
How should you plan for weather?
Mountain views depend on visibility. Check the webcam before going up Jungfraujoch, Gornergrat or Matterhorn Glacier Paradise, carry warm layers even in summer and keep a spare day. Our Swiss Alps Classic 6N lets the planner swap days when cloud covers the summit.
