About South Africa

  • Our packages7 to 9 nights
  • Best timeMay to Sep
  • Visa for IndiansVisa required

South Africa is a large country, and most first trips from India combine two or three regions. Cape Town offers Table Mountain, the Cape Peninsula, the Winelands and beaches. Kruger National Park is the country's well-known safari area, and Johannesburg is the main international gateway. The three packages on this page follow that pattern, so you can compare how many nights each region gets.

Our packages are land-only and move you by private vehicle. Cape Town & Safari 7N pairs four nights in Cape Town with three nights in the Kruger area. South Africa Classic 8N adds a Johannesburg night and a Soweto tour. South Africa Family 9N adds more rest time, a flexible weather day and a penguin stop at Boulders Beach. Each package lists its hotel nights, transfers and visa assistance in full.

Plan your days around the flights. Our research shows no direct flights from India to South Africa, so most routings take one stop through Dubai, Doha, Addis Ababa, Nairobi or another hub. Domestic flights often link Cape Town and Johannesburg. Read how to reach South Africa for flight times from each Indian city, and check the South Africa visa guide before you book.

Our verdict

May to September is the usual window for safari, because vegetation is thinner and animals gather near water. June to November suits whale watching at Hermanus. Cape Town is especially pleasant in April to May and in early September to October, while December to February brings warm beach weather and peak demand. Shoulder months often offer better availability and value. See the full best time to visit South Africa guide.

Day by day

Sample 8-day South Africa itinerary

Based on our Cape Town & Safari 7N package. Your trip expert can stretch or shorten any day.

  1. Day1

Arrival in Johannesburg and connection to Cape Town

Land at O.R. Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg, the main gateway for South Africa. Your planner confirms the connecting domestic flight to Cape Town shown in your itinerary. A driver meets you in Cape Town and takes you to your hotel in the city. Rest after the journey, then take an easy walk in the evening to get your bearings.

    BreakfastNight in Cape Town
  2. Day2

Cape Town city and Table Mountain

Ride the Table Mountain cableway, which can close when the wind is strong, so keep this day flexible. If the cableway is closed, use the morning for a city tour instead. In the afternoon, walk the Bo-Kaap lanes and visit the V&A Waterfront. Use arranged transport after dark rather than walking between areas.

    BreakfastNight in Cape Town
  3. Day3

    Cape Peninsula by private vehicle

Spend the day touring the Cape Peninsula by private vehicle. Stop at Boulders Beach to see the penguin colony and at Camps Bay for coastal views. Pack sunscreen, a light jacket and water, because the coast can be windy. Return to Cape Town in the late afternoon and rest before dinner.

    BreakfastNight in Cape Town
  4. Day4

    Cape Winelands and Stellenbosch

Travel to Stellenbosch, the historic Winelands town with concentrated estates and cellar tours. Your driver takes you between estates, so no one needs to drive after a tasting. Lunch at an estate is a good way to spend the middle of the day. Return to Cape Town in the early evening and pack for the flight to Johannesburg.

    BreakfastNight in Cape Town
  5. Day5

Fly to Johannesburg and drive to the Kruger area

Take the domestic flight from Cape Town to Johannesburg, as listed in your itinerary. Your driver then transfers you by road to the Kruger area and to your lodge. Settle in and join the afternoon game drive. Pack a warm layer, binoculars and a camera, because early morning drives can be cool.

    BreakfastNight in Kruger area
  6. Day6

Full-day safari in Kruger National Park

Enjoy a morning and an afternoon game drive with an experienced guide. Early drives tend to be more productive than late starts, so keep to the early departure. Rest at midday during the warmest hours. Big Five sightings are possible in Kruger, but they depend on the animals, so enjoy the birds and smaller wildlife too.

    BreakfastNight in Kruger area
  7. Day7

Morning drive and a lodge afternoon

Take one more morning game drive, then return to the lodge for breakfast and a rest. Use the afternoon for a quiet walk in the lodge grounds or a break by the pool. Ask your guide which gate and drive routes suit your interests, because cross-park drives can use up game-viewing time.

    BreakfastNight in Kruger area
  8. Day8

    Departure from Johannesburg

Have breakfast at the lodge and check out. Your driver takes you to Johannesburg for your onward flight, leaving enough time for the road and airport check-in. Most routings from India connect through Addis Ababa, Dubai, Doha or Nairobi, so confirm your departure time with your planner before the trip.

Budget guide

How much does a South Africa trip cost?

Starting prices of our packages, per person on twin sharing, excl. GST and flights.

Four things drive the price of a South Africa trip. International airfare is a major cost and is never part of our packages. Safari lodge location and meal plan come next, and private reserves cost more than national-park stays. Domestic flights and peak-season hotels in Cape Town add to the total. Private or shared game drives also change the price. Read the full South Africa trip cost guide before you choose.

FAQs

South Africa tour package FAQs

Quick answers to what travellers ask before booking a South Africa trip. Ask your trip expert anything else.

Do Indians need a visa for South Africa?

Yes. Indian ordinary passport holders must get a South African visitor visa before travel, because visas are not issued on arrival. Apply through the South African Department of Home Affairs process and confirm the current requirements before you book flights. Our packages include visa assistance, but the visa fee is separate.

How many days are enough for South Africa?

Seven days works for Cape Town, Johannesburg and a short safari. Ten to fourteen days is better if you also want the Garden Route, the Winelands or Durban. Our three packages run from seven to nine nights, so you can choose the length that fits your interests and budget.

Which package suits a first trip to South Africa?

Cape Town & Safari 7N suits first-timers who want Cape Town and a short Kruger safari. South Africa Classic 8N adds a Johannesburg night and a Soweto tour. South Africa Family 9N suits families, with a flexible weather day, short transfer days and penguins at Boulders Beach.

Are flights included in your South Africa packages?

No. Our packages are land-only, so international flights are booked separately. Domestic flights appear only where your itinerary lists them. Our planners can suggest arrival and departure times from your city, and they will explain the connection you would take.

Is South Africa safe for Indian tourists?

Popular tourism areas are regularly visited. Use arranged transfers, avoid displaying valuables, avoid walking alone at night and follow local security advice. Stay in reputable accommodation and use registered transport. Check current travel advice before you book, and follow your lodge or tour operator's guidance.

Can I see the Big Five in South Africa?

Yes. Kruger and private reserves such as Sabi Sand support all Big Five species. Sightings depend on the animals and the weather, so they cannot be promised. Early morning game drives are usually more productive than late starts, and private reserves are another option for a more focused safari.

Is South Africa expensive for Indian travellers?

It can be moderate outside peak periods. Safari lodges, private guides, domestic flights and peak-season Cape Town hotels can raise costs substantially. Budget options are available in cities and on self-drive trips, and shoulder months often offer better value. Compare each package's inclusions before you choose.

Is South Africa cheaper than Kenya for a holiday?

Comparable trips can be similar in price. South Africa often offers better value for self-drive and a wider range of accommodation. Kenya can be competitive for a focused Maasai Mara safari. Choose by the trip you want, not only by price, and ask us to compare the two for your dates.

What currency and time zone does South Africa use?

South Africa uses the South African rand (ZAR) and UTC+2, with no daylight saving time. Cards are widely accepted, but keep some rand for small purchases and tips. Exchange rates fluctuate, so check the current rate before you travel.

How early should I book a South Africa package?

Reserve safari lodges early for July to October and for festive dates, when demand is highest. Shoulder months usually give more choice. Ask your planner for a written quote that lists every inclusion and exclusion before you pay.
