About this trip

South Africa Family 9N gives families nine nights across Cape Town, the Kruger safari area and Johannesburg. It is built for a steady pace: transfer days are kept short and each region has a clear purpose. Table Mountain, penguins at Boulders Beach, Kruger game drives and a Soweto tour give children varied days, while parents get rest between activities.

Cape Town takes four nights, with a flexible weather day for the Table Mountain cableway, which wind often closes. The Cape Peninsula day includes Boulders Beach. The Winelands day includes a lunch stop that suits children. On day five the domestic flight from Cape Town to Johannesburg brings you to the Kruger area for three nights of game drives.

Kruger game drives start early, with shorter afternoons when children tire. The package ends in Johannesburg with a Soweto tour, a morning at the Apartheid Museum and a relaxed final day. Flights are booked separately. For planning, read the South Africa travel guide, things to do in South Africa and South Africa trip cost. Families who want a shorter trip can see the South Africa tour packages.

Day-by-day itinerary

Your trip expert can stretch, shorten or swap any day.

  1. Day 1: Arrival in Johannesburg and connection to Cape Town

Arrive at O.R. Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg, where your driver meets you. Take the domestic connection to Cape Town shown in your itinerary and transfer to your hotel. Keep the first day easy, with an early dinner and a full night's rest. Long transfer days are tiring with children, so this day is light on purpose.

    BreakfastNight in Cape Town
  2. Day 2: Cape Town city and Table Mountain

Ride the Table Mountain cableway if the wind allows. Wind often closes it, so keep this day flexible and swap it with the Peninsula day if needed. Visit the V&A Waterfront for lunch and a look at the harbour. Keep the afternoon for rest, and plan transport with your driver rather than walking long distances.

    BreakfastNight in Cape Town
  3. Day 3: Cape Peninsula and Boulders Beach

Spend the day touring the Cape Peninsula by private vehicle. Visit Boulders Beach, where penguins live along the shore, and stop at Camps Bay for coastal views. Pack sunscreen, hats, water, snacks and a light jacket, since the coast can be windy. Return to Cape Town in the late afternoon for an early dinner.

    BreakfastNight in Cape Town
  4. Day 4: Winelands and a family lunch

Visit Stellenbosch by private vehicle for a cellar tour and lunch at an estate with space for children. Keep tastings for the adults and plan juice or a farm walk for the children. Your driver handles every drive, so nobody needs to drive after a tasting. Return to Cape Town in the early evening.

    BreakfastNight in Cape Town
  5. Day 5: Fly to Johannesburg and transfer to Kruger

Take the domestic flight from Cape Town to Johannesburg listed in your itinerary, then transfer by road to the Kruger area. Check in at your lodge and rest before the afternoon game drive. Ask the lodge whether children may join game drives, since some drives and walks have minimum ages.

    BreakfastNight in Kruger area
  6. Day 6: Kruger game drives with children

Start with an early morning game drive, because early drives are more productive than late starts. Return to the lodge for a rest during the heat. Pack snacks, water, sunscreen and hats for everyone. Check the minimum age for any walking safari, and keep the afternoon drive shorter if children tire.

    BreakfastNight in Kruger area
  7. Day 7: Second Kruger day at a relaxed pace

Take another morning game drive, then spend the day at a relaxed pace. Check malaria advice for Kruger-area travel with your doctor before you leave India, and carry any medicine they prescribe. Keep transfers short, because long days are hard with children.

    BreakfastNight in Kruger area
  8. Day 8: Transfer to Johannesburg and Soweto

Check out after breakfast and drive to Johannesburg. Take the Soweto tour in the afternoon, covering the township's history and neighbourhoods. Keep walking short and use arranged transport between stops, as your planner advises. Rest at your hotel in the evening.

    BreakfastNight in Johannesburg
  9. Day 9: Apartheid Museum and a free afternoon

Spend the morning at the Apartheid Museum, a history visit for the whole group if children are comfortable with the subject. Keep the afternoon free for rest and the pool. Use arranged transport and plan neighbourhood movements in daylight. Dinner at the hotel makes an easy last evening.

    BreakfastNight in Johannesburg
  10. Day 10: Departure from Johannesburg

Have breakfast, check out and head to O.R. Tambo International Airport for your onward flight. Leave enough time for traffic and check-in, especially with children and luggage. Your onward flight usually connects through a hub such as Dubai, Doha, Addis Ababa or Nairobi.

FAQs

South Africa Family 9N: FAQs

What travellers ask about this trip. Your trip expert can answer anything else.

Is this package suitable for children?

Yes, with planning. The package keeps transfer days short, builds rest into every region and includes a flexible weather day. Check minimum ages for walking safaris and private reserves, and ask the lodge about children on game drives before you travel. Your planner can adjust the pace for younger children.

How many days are enough for a family trip to South Africa?

Nine nights gives Cape Town, the Kruger area and Johannesburg without rushing. Seven nights works for a shorter trip with fewer stops. Ten to fourteen days allows the Garden Route or Durban, which suits families who want a coastal stay as well as a safari.

What does the Family 9N package include?

Nine nights in comfort-category hotels on twin sharing, daily breakfast, private airport transfers and sightseeing, Kruger game drives as per the itinerary, a Soweto tour and visa assistance. Flights to and from South Africa, the visa fee, travel insurance, meals not listed and personal expenses are extra.

Does the package include flights?

No. Our packages are land-only, so international flights are booked separately. Our research shows no direct flights from India, so most routings take one stop through Dubai, Doha, Addis Ababa or Nairobi. Your planner can suggest timings that suit children and luggage.

Is it safe to travel with children in South Africa?

Popular tourism areas are regularly visited. Use arranged transfers, avoid displaying valuables, avoid walking alone at night and follow local security advice. Keep children close in busy areas, and check current travel advice before you book.

When should a family travel to South Africa?

May to September is generally best for safari, when animals gather near water. April to June and September to October suit families who want a comfortable mix of safari and city days. December and January bring peak demand in Cape Town, so book early for those months.
