About this trip

South Africa Classic 8N is a balanced first trip that covers three regions: Cape Town, the Kruger safari area and Johannesburg. Eight nights gives four nights in Cape Town, three in the Kruger area and one in Johannesburg. It suits first-time visitors and couples who want the city, the wine country and a safari in one holiday, finished with a Soweto tour.

The Cape Town section covers Table Mountain, the Cape Peninsula with its penguins at Boulders Beach, and a Winelands day in Stellenbosch. Travel by private vehicle keeps the days relaxed. On day five you take the domestic flight from Cape Town to Johannesburg and drive to the Kruger area, where game drives run in the morning and afternoon.

The final section returns to Johannesburg for a Soweto tour and a relaxed evening before your departure on day nine. Flights to and from South Africa are booked separately. For planning, read the South Africa travel guide, how to reach South Africa and South Africa trip cost. If you prefer a shorter trip, see the South Africa tour packages.

  • Table Mountain and the Cape Peninsula from a four-night Cape Town base
  • A Winelands day in Stellenbosch with cellar tours
  • Morning and afternoon game drives in Kruger National Park
  • A Soweto tour in Johannesburg
  • Three regions in one trip: Cape Town, Kruger and Johannesburg

Day-by-day itinerary

Your trip expert can stretch, shorten or swap any day.

  1. Day 1: Arrival in Johannesburg and connection to Cape Town

Arrive at O.R. Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg, where a driver meets you on arrival. Take the domestic connection to Cape Town listed in your itinerary, then transfer to your hotel. Keep the first evening light, with an early night before the city days begin. Johannesburg returns at the end of the trip for the Soweto tour.

    BreakfastNight in Cape Town
  2. Day 2: Cape Town city and Table Mountain

Ride the Table Mountain cableway when conditions allow, since wind often closes it. Keep this day flexible, and move the cableway to a later day if strong wind forces a closure. In the afternoon, walk the Bo-Kaap lanes, then visit the V&A Waterfront for dinner. Use arranged transport after dark rather than walking between areas.

    BreakfastNight in Cape Town
  3. Day 3: Cape Peninsula by private vehicle

Spend the day on a Cape Peninsula tour by private vehicle. Stop at Boulders Beach to see the penguin colony and at Camps Bay for coastal views. Pack sunscreen, a light jacket and water, since the coast can be windy. Return to Cape Town in the late afternoon, leaving time to rest before dinner.

    BreakfastNight in Cape Town
  4. Day 4: Winelands and Stellenbosch

Travel to Stellenbosch by private vehicle for a cellar tour and tastings at a wine estate. Your driver takes you between estates, so no one drives after a tasting. Lunch at an estate restaurant is a good way to spend the afternoon. Return to Cape Town in the early evening, with time to pack for the flight to Johannesburg.

    BreakfastNight in Cape Town
  5. Day 5: Fly to Johannesburg and drive to the Kruger area

Take the domestic flight from Cape Town to Johannesburg, as listed in your itinerary. Your driver then takes you to the Kruger area and your lodge. Join the afternoon game drive once you are settled. Pack a warm layer, binoculars and a camera, since early drives can be cool.

    BreakfastNight in Kruger area
  6. Day 6: Full-day safari in Kruger National Park

Enjoy a morning and an afternoon game drive with an experienced guide. Early drives are more productive than late starts, so keep to the early departure. Rest at midday during the warmest hours. Big Five sightings are possible in Kruger, but they cannot be promised, so enjoy the birds and smaller animals too.

    BreakfastNight in Kruger area
  7. Day 7: Morning drive and a lodge afternoon

Take one more morning game drive, then return to the lodge for breakfast and a rest. Choose the afternoon for a quiet walk in the lodge grounds or a pool break. Ask your guide which gate and drive routes suit your interests, because cross-park drives can use up game-viewing time.

    BreakfastNight in Kruger area
  8. Day 8: Transfer to Johannesburg and Soweto

Check out after breakfast and drive to Johannesburg, leaving time for the road and traffic. Take the Soweto tour in the afternoon, which covers the township's history and neighbourhoods. Use arranged transport between stops and plan movements in daylight. Rest at your Johannesburg hotel for the last night.

    BreakfastNight in Johannesburg
  9. Day 9: Departure from Johannesburg

Have breakfast and check out. Your driver takes you to O.R. Tambo International Airport for your onward flight, leaving enough time for check-in. Most routings from India connect through Addis Ababa, Dubai, Doha or Nairobi, so keep a buffer if your connection is tight. Confirm your departure time with your planner before the trip.

FAQs

South Africa Classic 8N: FAQs

What travellers ask about this trip. Your trip expert can answer anything else.

Is eight nights enough to see Cape Town and Kruger?

Eight nights covers the main highlights of Cape Town and one Kruger safari, plus a short Johannesburg stay. Four nights in Cape Town and three in the Kruger area leave little time for slow days. Ten to fourteen days allows the Garden Route or Durban, which this package does not include.

What does the South Africa Classic 8N include?

Eight nights in comfort-category hotels on twin sharing, daily breakfast, private airport transfers and sightseeing by private vehicle, Kruger game drives as per the itinerary, a Soweto tour and visa assistance. Flights to and from South Africa, the visa fee, travel insurance, meals not listed and personal expenses are extra.

Does this package include flights from India?

No. Our packages are land-only, so flights are booked separately. The research shows no direct flights from India to South Africa, so the usual route is one stop through Addis Ababa, Dubai, Doha or Nairobi. Mumbai generally offers the broadest one-stop choice. Our planners can advise on timings.

When is the best time to travel on this package?

May to September is generally best for safari, when vegetation is thinner and animals gather near water. October to April is warmer and greener. June to November suits whale watching in the Cape. December and January bring peak demand in Cape Town, so book early for those months.

Is South Africa safe for Indian travellers on this trip?

Popular tourism areas are regularly visited. Use arranged transfers, keep valuables out of sight, avoid walking alone at night and follow local security advice. Stay in reputable accommodation and use registered transport. Check current travel advice before you book and follow your lodge or tour operator's guidance.

Can I add the Garden Route to this trip?

Yes, but it means extra nights and a longer itinerary. The Garden Route needs at least two nights, and the research suggests ten to fourteen days for a trip that includes it. Ask your planner to rebuild the itinerary, which changes the number of nights and the quote.
