South Africa has no single ideal month, because the country has several climates. The north-east, where Kruger National Park lies, has a clear dry and wet season. The Cape, around Cape Town, has milder weather and a different pattern of rain and wind. Your choice depends on whether a safari, the city, the coast or the wine country matters most. This guide sets out each season, gives the month-by-month weather from our research and suggests how to match the timing to your trip. For the basics, see the South Africa travel guide.
When is the best time for a safari?
May to September is the usual window for safari. The dry season thins the vegetation, which makes animals easier to spot, and animals gather near water as the rivers and waterholes shrink. June to August is the classic period, with dry conditions and cool mornings. Our research says June to September usually gives the clearest game-viewing conditions in Kruger, although school holidays can raise prices in July and August.
Wet months are not unusable for a safari, but the vegetation is thicker and sightings can be harder. Early morning drives are most productive in any month, so plan your days around them.
When is the best time for Cape Town?
Cape Town has a different pattern. The summer months from December to February are warm, with good beach weather, but they are also peak holiday months with high demand and higher prices. April and May and early September to October are often the most comfortable for sightseeing, because the days are mild and the crowds are smaller. June and July are cooler and wetter, which suits indoor visits, wine tastings and a slower pace.
Table Mountain is the activity most affected by the weather. Wind can close the cableway in any season, so plan a flexible day whatever month you choose.
When is whale season?
Whale watching at Hermanus starts around June and runs to November. Southern right whales can be seen from land, and the strongest viewing is usually through winter and spring. Sightings depend on the season and the weather, so do not plan a whole day around them. Combine a Hermanus visit with a Cape Winelands day for a balanced trip.
What is the weather like month by month?
These figures come from our research. Temperatures are the daily high and low in degrees Celsius, and rainfall is the monthly total.
- January: highs of 29°C and lows of 16°C, with about 90 mm of rain. Warm, wet safari season in Kruger, and an excellent Cape Town summer with peak domestic demand.
- February: highs of 29°C and lows of 16°C, with about 80 mm of rain. Warm and generally wet in the north-east, with good Cape Town beach weather.
- March: highs of 28°C and lows of 15°C, with about 70 mm of rain. A good shoulder month, with greener landscapes and fewer crowds.
- April: highs of 25°C and lows of 11°C, with about 45 mm of rain. A comfortable transition month, with improving safari visibility and mild Cape weather.
- May: highs of 24°C and lows of 7°C, with about 25 mm of rain. A strong value month, with the dry-season safari beginning and the Cape whale season approaching.
- June: highs of 21°C and lows of 4°C, with about 15 mm of rain. Excellent Kruger game viewing. Cape Town is cooler and wetter, and whale watching starts.
- July: highs of 22°C and lows of 4°C, with about 10 mm of rain. Peak safari conditions with dry vegetation. School-holiday demand can raise prices.
- August: highs of 24°C and lows of 6°C, with about 12 mm of rain. An excellent safari and whale-watching month. Wildflowers begin in the Western Cape.
- September: highs of 26°C and lows of 9°C, with about 25 mm of rain. An excellent overall shoulder month, with spring landscapes, whales and strong safari viewing.
- October: highs of 27°C and lows of 12°C, with about 55 mm of rain. A good value shoulder season, with warmer weather and occasional north-east thunderstorms.
- November: highs of 28°C and lows of 14°C, with about 75 mm of rain. A good mixed month, with the safari greening while whale season continues.
- December: highs of 29°C and lows of 16°C, with about 95 mm of rain. Peak festive season, with Cape Town popular and expensive, and Kruger hot with afternoon storms.
Which months offer good value?
March to May and September to November are the shoulder months that often give more choice and better value. Lodges may be easier to book, and Cape Town hotels are less crowded than in December and January. October and November suit a combined safari, whale and spring itinerary well. Reserve safari lodges early for July to October and for festive dates, because those are the busiest periods.
When is the best time for families or honeymooners?
Families often find April to June and September to October comfortable, with mild weather and manageable crowds. Honeymooners often favour September to November, when the Cape is in spring and a safari can be combined with wine country and coast. Christmas and New Year bring the highest demand, so book early if those dates matter to you.
How do you choose your month?
Start with your main interest. For wildlife, choose June to August. For the city and wine country, choose April, May, September or October. For beaches, December to February is warm, though the Atlantic water in Cape Town is cold at any time. Then check the packages. Our South Africa tour packages run for seven to nine nights, which fits most of these seasons.
Our traveller reports do not point to one month that visitors commonly regret. Choose by your priorities, and read the cost notes in the trip cost guide before you fix your dates.
How was this guide compiled?
