At a glance
Nepal is a landlocked Himalayan country in South Asia, and one of the closest international trips from India. English is widely used in tourism, Indian nationals do not need a visa, and Kathmandu is under two hours by air from Delhi. It works for couples, families, friends, pilgrims and first-time travellers abroad, as long as they accept mountain weather and some long road days.
A trip is built from a few distinct places. Kathmandu is the cultural base, with UNESCO-listed Durbar Square, Swayambhunath, Boudhanath and Pashupatinath. Pokhara adds Phewa Lake and views of the Annapurna range, and serves as a base for short treks. Chitwan National Park offers jeep safaris, canoeing and Tharu village visits, while Lumbini, Nagarkot and the big treks suit longer trips.
Most travellers fly into Tribhuvan International Airport (KTM) in Kathmandu. Five days covers Kathmandu and Pokhara, and seven days is ideal if you add Chitwan or Nagarkot. Choose from Nepal Highlights 5N, Kathmandu Pashupatinath and Muktinath pilgrimage plan 6N and Nepal with Chitwan 7N, or ask us to customise one. Our planners keep road days realistic and add buffer time, and every quote lists what is included. For deeper planning, read our Nepal travel guide, places to visit in Nepal and Nepal trip cost. Season guide
October and November, and March and April, are the best months to visit Nepal. October is clear and stable, and November is dry with excellent visibility, though evenings are cooler. March and April are warmer, with rhododendrons in flower and occasional showers or haze. June to September is monsoon, with heavy rain, landslide risk and flight delays. Day by day
Based on our Nepal Highlights 5N package. Your trip expert can stretch or shorten any day.
Land at Tribhuvan International Airport and meet your driver for the transfer to your hotel. Check in and rest. If your flight arrives early, visit Boudhanath or Pashupatinath in the afternoon. Keep the day light, because heritage traffic in Kathmandu can slow every plan and the next day is full.
Spend the day on the UNESCO-listed sights of Kathmandu: Swayambhunath, Kathmandu Durbar Square and Patan. Start early and allow extra time, because traffic and festival closures can turn a half-day plan into a full one. If you missed Boudhanath and Pashupatinath yesterday, fit them in today.
Travel from Kathmandu to Pokhara by road. The journey commonly takes six to nine hours, so leave after breakfast and plan stops on the way. Check in and spend the evening by Phewa Lake. A domestic flight is a faster option, but weather delays are frequent, so confirm it with your planner.
Drive up to Sarangkot for sunrise, when clear skies show the Annapurna range. Cloud changes quickly, so your planner can shift the visit to the first clear morning. Return for breakfast, then explore Pokhara and spend time on Phewa Lake. A short easy hike near Pokhara is a common add-on.
Return to Kathmandu by road, a long day of six to nine hours. Check in and rest. Use the evening for a short walk or last shopping nearby. Staying the last night in Kathmandu keeps a buffer in case road or weather delays push your plans, and it makes the airport transfer easy.
Have breakfast and check out. Your driver takes you to Tribhuvan International Airport for your flight home. Leave generous time for traffic and check-in, and keep your passport or Election Commission voter ID handy, because Aadhaar is not accepted as a travel document for Nepal.
Budget guide

Five things move the price of a Nepal trip. Hotel category and location matter most. Trip length comes next, and adding Chitwan or a trek raises the total. Season counts too, because October and November and March and April are the busiest and cost more. Private vehicles cost more than tourist buses, and domestic flights add to the total. Our packages are land-only, so flights are extra. Read more in Nepal trip cost.

FAQs
Quick answers to what travellers ask before booking a Nepal trip. Ask your trip expert anything else.
Five to seven days suits Kathmandu, Pokhara and one short excursion. Seven days is ideal if you add Chitwan or Nagarkot. A trek, or a trip that adds Chitwan to the circuit comfortably, usually needs ten to fourteen days.
October and November, and March and April, are generally best for clear mountain views, trekking and comfortable sightseeing. June to September is monsoon, with heavy rain, landslide risk and more transport delays. December to February is dry but cold at altitude.
No. Indian nationals do not need a visa, but must carry an accepted identity document such as a passport or Election Commission voter ID. Nepal immigration states that Aadhaar is not accepted as a travel document, so do not rely on it.
Nepal is broadly suitable for tourism. Plan for road safety, altitude illness, weather disruptions and the usual precautions against petty theft in cities. Use registered guides for remote treks, and buy insurance that covers evacuation if you trek.
No. Our packages are land-only and cover the hotel, transfers and sightseeing agreed in your itinerary. Flights are booked separately, and our planners can suggest timings from your city. Travel insurance is also arranged separately unless your itinerary says otherwise.
Kathmandu, Pokhara, Chitwan, Lumbini and Nagarkot are the most practical highlights for first-time visitors. Kathmandu and Pokhara form the usual core, and Chitwan or Nagarkot is a common add-on for a seven-night trip.
Nepal uses the Nepalese rupee. Indian currency is accepted in some tourist areas, but denominations and exchange restrictions apply. Travellers report that UPI works in many places, not all, so carry Nepalese cash for smaller payments.
Yes. Pokhara's lakeside stays, Nagarkot and Dhulikhel viewpoints, and jungle lodges give romantic and private options, especially in October and November and March and April. Travellers often add Phewa Lake boating and a Sarangkot sunrise.
Tourist buses between Kathmandu, Pokhara and Chitwan commonly take six to nine hours. Travellers often say road days take more time than expected. A domestic flight is faster, but weather delays are frequent, so keep a buffer day before an international flight.
Book early for October and November, when hotels, domestic flights and trekking lodges fill fast. March and April are also busy. Outside those months there is more flexibility. Ask for a written quote with every inclusion listed before you pay.
