Places to Visit in Nepal

Quick answer

The most practical places to visit in Nepal are Kathmandu, Pokhara, Chitwan National Park, Lumbini and Nagarkot, with the Annapurna and Everest regions for trekkers. Kathmandu and Pokhara form the usual core of a five-day trip. Add Chitwan or Nagarkot at seven days, and plan ten to fourteen days for a trek.

Nepal packs lowland jungle, old royal cities, lakes and some of the highest mountains on earth into a small country. That makes choosing places harder than in a single-city destination. This guide explains each main place, what it is good for, and the tips that save time, so you can build a trip that fits your days. For ready-made routes, see our Nepal tour packages.

Which places in Nepal are worth visiting?

Travellers most often build a trip around five places: Kathmandu, Pokhara, Chitwan National Park, Lumbini and Nagarkot. Two trekking regions, Annapurna and the Everest region, suit those with more days and fitness. Bandipur, Tansen, Ilam, Upper Mustang and Bardia are less-visited options for a second trip.

Kathmandu: heritage and a cultural base

Kathmandu is a compact cultural base. It holds UNESCO-listed Kathmandu Durbar Square, Swayambhunath, Boudhanath and Pashupatinath, and Patan and Bhaktapur are close by. Two days covers the main sights. Allow buffer time, because heritage-site traffic and festival closures can make a nominal half-day plan take much longer. Some travellers find the streets narrow, dusty and polluted, especially when they compare the city with the mountains. Many then prefer to spend more time in quieter places such as Pokhara.

Pokhara: lake, views and short hikes

Pokhara sits beside Phewa Lake, where the Annapurna and Machhapuchhre peaks reflect on clear days. It suits couples, families and anyone who wants a calmer base than Kathmandu. Two days is the usual minimum. Travellers often add a short, easy hike, and Australian Camp near Pokhara is a common choice. Schedule the Sarangkot sunrise on the first clear morning instead of fixing it to one day, because cloud cover changes quickly.

Chitwan National Park: wildlife in the lowlands

Chitwan is Nepal's best-known lowland wildlife area. It offers jeep safaris, canoeing and Tharu village experiences, and the wider wildlife list includes rhino, tiger, elephant, gharial, sloth bear and over 500 bird species. Allow two nights. Do not expect a tiger on a given day. Rhinos are a more realistic sighting, and safari quality depends on season and guide. Our Nepal with Chitwan 7N package builds the stop into a Kathmandu and Pokhara circuit.

Lumbini: the birthplace of the Buddha

Lumbini is the archaeological birthplace of Siddhartha Gautama, with an international monastery zone nearby. It is a major Buddhist pilgrimage site. The site is spread out and hot, so arrange an e-rickshaw or cycle and start early instead of walking between every monastery. Allow one day, but note that road transfers make Lumbini hard to fit into a seven-day trip.

Nagarkot: a short sunrise escape

Nagarkot is a short hill escape from Kathmandu, known for Himalayan sunrise views and village walks on clear autumn mornings. One night or one day works. It is not a reliable Everest-view destination from every hotel, so confirm which way your viewpoint faces and what weather to expect. Dhulikhel is a similar hill option on the Kathmandu side.

Everest Base Camp trek: for those with two weeks

The Everest Base Camp trek takes you through Sherpa villages and high-altitude landscapes on the Khumbu approach to the world's highest mountain. It needs about 14 days. Acclimatisation days are essential, because compressing the trek to save nights raises health and evacuation risk. Domestic flights into the region, such as Lukla, depend on weather, so keep buffer days.

Annapurna region: flexible treks

The Annapurna region offers routes around Ghorepani, Mardi Himal and Annapurna Base Camp, with varied durations and broad scenery. A typical short trek takes about five days. Road construction and seasonal landslides can alter trail access, so confirm the latest roadhead and lodge route before you leave. Travellers report that longer treks such as Annapurna Base Camp need advance planning, not a last-minute booking.

Places for pilgrims

Nepal holds major Hindu and Buddhist pilgrimage sites, including Pashupatinath Temple, Muktinath Temple, Lumbini, Janaki Mandir in Janakpur, Boudhanath Stupa and Swayambhunath. Muktinath depends on a weather-sensitive flight to Jomsom, so build a spare day. Our Pashupatinath and Muktinath pilgrimage plan does this.

Which base should you choose for a first visit?

Travellers commonly combine Kathmandu and Pokhara instead of treating either as the only base. Kathmandu is useful for heritage sights and international arrival connections. Pokhara is the calmer base, with lake activities and easy access to short mountain hikes. A first trip that uses both, with a last night in Kathmandu, is the pattern our Nepal Highlights 5N follows.

How many days do you need?

  • 3 days: tight. See Kathmandu only: Durbar Square, Swayambhunath, Boudhanath, Pashupatinath and Patan or Bhaktapur. Skip Pokhara and Chitwan.
  • 5 days: a good first trip. Kathmandu heritage plus Pokhara, Sarangkot and Phewa Lake.
  • 7 days: ideal. Add Chitwan or Nagarkot to the Kathmandu and Pokhara circuit.
  • 10 days: ideal for Kathmandu, Pokhara, Chitwan and a short Annapurna trek or Bandipur.
  • 14 days: ideal for an Annapurna or Everest-region trek, plus the main circuit. Do not combine multiple high-altitude treks.

FAQs

Places to Visit in Nepal: FAQs

Short answers to what travellers ask about Nepal.

Which are the main places to visit in Nepal?

Kathmandu, Pokhara, Chitwan National Park, Lumbini and Nagarkot are the most practical highlights for first-time visitors. Trekkers add the Annapurna or Everest regions. Kathmandu and Pokhara together form the core of most five-day trips.

How many days do I need in Kathmandu?

Two days covers the main sights: Durbar Square, Swayambhunath, Boudhanath and Pashupatinath, with Patan or Bhaktapur if time allows. Allow buffer time, because traffic and festival closures can slow a day of sightseeing considerably.

Is Pokhara better than Kathmandu?

They do different jobs. Kathmandu holds the heritage sights and the international airport, while Pokhara offers a calmer lakeside base, Himalayan views and easy short hikes. Travellers often combine both instead of choosing one.

Will I see a tiger in Chitwan National Park?

Do not count on it. Rhinos are a more realistic sighting, and safari quality depends on season and guide. Chitwan also supports elephants, gharial and many birds, so treat every sighting as a bonus.

Can I see Everest from Nagarkot?

Not reliably from every hotel. Nagarkot is known for Himalayan sunrise views on clear autumn mornings, but views depend on weather and the direction your viewpoint faces. Confirm both before you book a night there.

Is Lumbini worth the long journey?

It is a major Buddhist pilgrimage site, the archaeological birthplace of Siddhartha Gautama, with an international monastery zone. Road transfers are long, so it suits pilgrims and trips of ten days or more, not a tight seven-day plan.

Can I do the Everest Base Camp trek in a short trip?

No. The trek needs about 14 days, and acclimatisation days are essential. Shortening it to save nights raises health and evacuation risk. A shorter Annapurna trek of around five days suits travellers with less time.

What is an easy hike near Pokhara?

Travellers often mention Australian Camp as an easy addition near Pokhara. It suits those who want a mountain view without a long trek. Ask your planner to add it, and check the weather on the day.
