Nepal travel guide
The main things to do in Nepal are heritage sightseeing in Kathmandu, lake and sunrise views in Pokhara, a jungle safari at Chitwan, and trekking in the Annapurna or Everest regions. Adventure options include rafting, paragliding, canyoning and mountain flights. Match activities to your days: five days suits sightseeing and Pokhara, while a trek needs ten to fourteen.

Nepal offers more variety than its size suggests. In one trip you can walk through old royal squares, drift across a lake at dawn, ride a jeep through lowland jungle and hike toward high mountains. The challenge is fitting it together without spending the trip on the road. This guide sorts the main activities by interest, with realistic notes on time, season and effort.
Most first trips combine three kinds of activity: culture in Kathmandu, scenery and light adventure in Pokhara, and wildlife in Chitwan. Trekking, rafting and paragliding sit on top for those with time and energy. See places to visit in Nepal for the places behind each activity.
Kathmandu rewards early starts. Visit Swayambhunath, Boudhanath and Pashupatinath, and walk through the Durbar Squares of Kathmandu, Patan and Bhaktapur. These are UNESCO-listed or major pilgrimage sites, and many are living places of worship, so dress modestly and follow local rules. Allow buffer time, because traffic and festival closures can stretch a half-day plan. A Newar heritage walk adds local context, and many travellers say a local guide helps with navigation.
Sarangkot above Pokhara and Nagarkot near Kathmandu are the classic sunrise points. On clear mornings they show Himalayan ranges, including Annapurna from Sarangkot. Cloud cover changes quickly, so keep flexibility instead of fixing one morning. Nagarkot is not a reliable Everest-view destination from every hotel, so confirm your viewpoint's direction. October and November give the most reliable views.
Phewa Lake reflects the Annapurna and Machhapuchhre peaks on clear days. A boat ride is an easy, relaxed activity for couples, families and older travellers. Honeymooners often pair it with a Sarangkot sunrise and a slower stay near the lake. Travellers say Pokhara is calmer than Kathmandu, which makes it a good place to rest mid-trip.
You do not need a full trek to feel the mountains. Travellers often add a short hike after seeing the scenery, and Australian Camp near Pokhara is a common easy choice. Annapurna-region options include Ghorepani and Mardi Himal for those with several days. Confirm the latest trail access before you go, because landslides and construction can change routes.
Trekking is Nepal's signature activity. The Annapurna region offers flexible routes of about five days or more, including Ghorepani, Mardi Himal and Annapurna Base Camp. The Everest Base Camp trek needs about 14 days and passes Sherpa villages on the Khumbu approach. Acclimatisation days are essential, and compressing a trek raises health and evacuation risk. Use licensed guides and porters, insure for evacuation, and book popular routes in advance. Do not combine several high-altitude treks in one trip.
Chitwan National Park offers jeep safaris, canoeing and Tharu village experiences. Wildlife includes rhino, tiger, elephant, gharial, sloth bear and over 500 bird species. Rhinos are a more realistic sighting than tigers, and safari quality depends on season and guide, so treat each animal as a bonus. Our Nepal with Chitwan 7N package adds two nights here. Bardia is a quieter option for a longer trip.
Nepal is a base for whitewater rafting, paragliding in Pokhara, canyoning and mountain flights. Rafting and canyoning suit groups and friends, and paragliding gives a view of the lake and peaks. Mountain flights show the range without a trek. All depend on weather and season, so book with licensed operators and keep buffer days.
Nepal has major Hindu and Buddhist sites. Pashupatinath, Boudhanath and Swayambhunath are in Kathmandu, while Lumbini, Muktinath and Janakpur lie farther afield. Muktinath depends on a weather-sensitive flight, so build a spare day. See our Pashupatinath and Muktinath pilgrimage plan for a ready route.
Yoga, meditation, Ayurveda-inspired treatments and mountain retreats are available around Kathmandu, Pokhara and Namo Buddha, and in Dhulikhel resorts. Nepali cooking classes and Sherpa village stays add culture. Couples often add a spa treatment and a quiet valley stay to a Pokhara trip.
Plan for road time and weather. The Kathmandu to Pokhara road commonly takes six to nine hours, and mountain flights are often delayed. Carry Nepalese cash, because UPI and Indian cash are accepted inconsistently. Strict vegetarians may find fewer choices outside tourist areas. Local apps such as InDrive and Pathao are popular with travellers for short rides. See best time to visit Nepal to choose your season.

FAQs
Short answers to what travellers ask about Nepal.
Explore Kathmandu's temples and stupas, watch sunrise from Sarangkot, boat on Phewa Lake, take a jungle safari at Chitwan, and trek in the Annapurna or Everest regions. Rafting, paragliding and mountain flights suit those who want adventure.
Short, lower-altitude hikes suit beginners, and Australian Camp near Pokhara is a common easy choice. Longer treks need fitness, acclimatisation days, licensed guides and evacuation insurance. Do not shorten a high-altitude trek to save nights.
An Annapurna-region trek can take about five days, while the Everest Base Camp trek needs about 14. Add Kathmandu and Pokhara time on top. Plan ten to fourteen days in total for a trip that includes a trek.
Trekking, mountaineering, rafting, paragliding, canyoning, mountain flights and jungle safaris are the main options. Availability depends on season and weather, so use licensed operators and keep buffer days around any flight.
Do not count on it. Rhinos are a more realistic sighting, and safari quality depends on season and guide. Chitwan also supports elephants, gharial and many birds, so treat every sighting as a bonus.
Boat on Phewa Lake, visit Sarangkot for sunrise, try paragliding, and add a short hike such as Australian Camp. Pokhara is calmer than Kathmandu and works as a base for short treks into the Annapurna region.
Couples often choose Phewa Lake boating, Sarangkot sunrise, a spa treatment and a peaceful valley or lodge stay. Nagarkot, Dhulikhel and jungle lodges add privacy. October, November, March and April give the clearest views.
A local guide helps for sightseeing where navigation and context matter, and licensed guides are advisable on remote or restricted treks. Many travellers say they wish they had arranged one. Book guides and permits through licensed providers.
