About Mauritius

  • Our packages6 nights
  • Best timeMay to Oct
  • Visa for IndiansNo visa needed

Mauritius is an island country in the Indian Ocean, southeast of Africa. For Indian travellers it is a long-haul beach holiday that feels easy once you land. English and French are both widely used, Mauritian Creole is spoken daily, and the island is built for visitors, with resorts, restaurants and private transfers on every coast. Flights from Mumbai take about six hours, and Chennai is about five and a half.

Unlike a single-resort destination, Mauritius rewards movement. The north around Grand Baie is the liveliest base, with beaches, restaurants and boat trips. The west, around Flic en Flac, has easy beach access and sits close to the southwest highlands, where Chamarel has the Seven Coloured Earth and a waterfall. Le Morne Brabant is a UNESCO-listed mountain and peninsula. Port Louis, the capital, adds a market and waterfront, and the east coast leads to the lagoon at Île aux Cerfs.

Most visitors land at Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport (MRU). A week is ideal for most first trips, because attractions are spread out and driving takes time. Our research suggests choosing one or two bases rather than changing hotels every night. Choose from the Mauritius Island Classic 6N, the Mauritius Honeymoon 6N or the Mauritius Family 6N, or ask us to customise one.

Our planners group sights by coast so you spend more time sightseeing and less time in traffic, and every quote lists exactly what is included. For deeper planning, read our Mauritius travel guide, places to visit in Mauritius and Mauritius trip cost pages.

Day by day

Sample 7-day Mauritius itinerary

Based on our Mauritius Family 6N package. Your trip expert can stretch or shorten any day.

  1. Day1

Arrival and transfer to Flic en Flac

Land at Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport (MRU) and meet your driver for the private transfer to Flic en Flac on the west coast. Check in, let the children rest and keep the evening easy with dinner at the hotel. Your single hotel base means no repacking during the week.

    DinnerNight in Flic en Flac
  2. Day2

    Beach and lagoon day

Spend a slow day at Flic en Flac, one of the island's popular swimming beaches. Check lagoon conditions and any kids' club on offer at your hotel before you plan activities. A lagoon or catamaran trip can be added to your quote. Use the day to recover from the flight.

    Night in Flic en Flac
  3. Day3

    Port Louis and Pamplemousses

Drive to Port Louis and visit Central Market early, before the traffic builds. Walk the waterfront. Then continue to Pamplemousses Botanical Garden to see the giant Victoria amazonica water lilies. Allow at least 90 minutes there. This is a full day with long drives, so bring snacks and water.

    Night in Flic en Flac
  4. Day4

Chamarel and the Seven Coloured Earth

Head into the southwest highlands for the Seven Coloured Earth and Chamarel waterfall. Treat it as a proper outing, not a quick photo stop. Return to the hotel for a rest in the afternoon. The west base keeps the drive shorter than it would be from the north or east.

    Night in Flic en Flac
  5. Day5

    Black River Gorges National Park

Visit Black River Gorges National Park, the island's main upland protected area, for forest viewpoints and the chance to see endemic birds. Trail conditions and visibility change quickly, so wear walking shoes and carry water. Ask your planner to match the walking to your family's ages and stamina.

    Night in Flic en Flac
  6. Day6

Le Morne Brabant and a free beach afternoon

Drive south to the Le Morne Brabant area, a UNESCO-listed mountain and peninsula, for the viewpoint and the coastline. The summit hike is strenuous and not part of this day. Return to Flic en Flac for a free afternoon of swimming and a farewell dinner.

    Night in Flic en Flac
  7. Day7

    Departure from Mauritius

Enjoy breakfast and check out. If your flight is later in the day, use the morning for a last swim. Your driver takes you to Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport (MRU), with enough time for traffic and check-in.

Budget guide

How much does a Mauritius trip cost?

Starting prices of our packages, per person on twin sharing, excl. GST and flights.

Five things move the price of a Mauritius trip. Hotel category and coast matter most, because resort beaches cost more than guesthouses and 3-star hotels. Meal plan comes next: breakfast only, half board and all-inclusive differ widely. Season counts, since December and January are peak. Transfers and excursions add more, especially catamaran trips and private vehicles. Flights are not included in our packages. Read more in Mauritius trip cost.

FAQs

Mauritius tour package FAQs

Quick answers to what travellers ask before booking a Mauritius trip. Ask your trip expert anything else.

How many days are enough for Mauritius?

Five to seven nights suit most first visits. Three days covers only the main highlights, and ten days allows a slower island-wide trip. Seven days lets you cover the north, west, southwest and east without rushing, with one marine day and one cultural or nature day.

What is the best time to visit Mauritius?

May to October is cooler and drier, and September to November is especially favourable for beaches and sightseeing. October is often the strongest single month. December to March is warmer and wetter, with cyclone risk. December is also peak season with higher prices.

Do Indians need a visa for Mauritius?

Indian ordinary-passport holders generally do not need a visa for a normal tourist visit, but entry is discretionary. Carry a valid passport, a return or onward ticket, confirmed accommodation and sufficient funds. Check current rules with the Mauritius Passport and Immigration Office or the High Commission before you fly.

Is Mauritius good for a honeymoon?

Yes. It combines beachfront resorts, private dining, sunset boat trips, scenic drives and varied excursions. September, October, November and May suit honeymoons well. Avoid too many hotel changes, because travellers say a romantic itinerary becomes tiring with long cross-island days. See our [Mauritius Honeymoon 6N](/packages/mauritius-honeymoon-6n/).

Is Mauritius good for families?

Yes. The island has reliable resort infrastructure, lagoons, family rooms and activities for mixed ages. Check lagoon conditions, kids' clubs, transfer length and family-room layout before booking. May to October is the most comfortable period for families. See our [Mauritius Family 6N](/packages/mauritius-family-6n/).

Do your Mauritius packages include flights?

No. Our packages are land-only and cover the hotel, transfers and sightseeing agreed in your itinerary. Flights are booked separately, and our planners can suggest timings from your city. Travel insurance is also separate. Visa assistance is included.

Which area is best to stay in Mauritius for a first visit?

Travellers most often favour the north or west for a first stay. Grand Baie and Trou aux Biches have accessible restaurants and nightlife, while the west offers convenient access to beaches and southwest attractions. Your planner can match the coast to your interests and the season.

Is Mauritius expensive for Indian tourists?

It is generally a mid-to-upmarket destination. Guesthouses and simple local meals are affordable, but beach resorts, private transfers and water activities raise costs. May to September is usually cheaper than November to April. Flights and resort transfers keep the cost floor above many Asian beach destinations.

Is Indian food available in Mauritius?

Travellers report that vegetarian choices and Indian-influenced food, such as roti and bhajis, are widely available. Hotel meals can cost more than local restaurants. Confirm dietary needs with your hotel in advance, and consider carrying your preferred tea or masala chai.

Which is better for a honeymoon, Mauritius or Maldives?

Mauritius offers beaches plus road trips, mountains and culture. The Maldives offers a concentrated private-island resort and lagoon experience. Choose by the trip you want. You can compare with our [Maldives tour packages](/maldives-tour-packages/) or [Seychelles tour packages](/seychelles-tour-packages/).
