Mauritius travel guide
A Mauritius trip costs more than many Asian beach holidays. Hotel category and coast, meal plan, season, transfers and excursions shape the total. Flights are the largest separate item. December and January are peak months. May to September is the value season, and a shorter trip costs less.

We do not quote prices in this guide. Costs depend on your dates, your departure city, the hotel you choose and the activities you add. What we can explain is what moves the total, so you can compare quotes properly. Mauritius is generally a mid-to-upmarket destination for Indian travellers. Budget guesthouses and simple meals are affordable, but beach resorts, private transfers and water activities raise the cost quickly.
Five things move the price most. Flights come first, because they are not included in our land packages and are booked separately. Hotel category and location come next. Meal plan follows, then season, and finally transfers and excursions.
Flights from India vary by city and by whether the trip is nonstop or has a connection. Our how to reach Mauritius page lists flight times from major cities. Mumbai usually has the strongest nonstop options, and Delhi, Chennai and Bengaluru can also have nonstop service on some dates.
Our research groups stays into four broad categories. Budget stays are typically 3-star hotels with breakfast, in areas such as Grand Baie, Flic en Flac and Mahébourg. Standard stays are typically 4-star hotels with half board, in areas such as Trou aux Biches, Anse la Raie, Belle Mare and Flic en Flac.
Premium stays are typically 5-star hotels with breakfast and dinner, in Blue Bay, Flic en Flac and Bel Ombre. Luxury stays are typically 5-star resorts with full board or premium half board, in Belle Mare, Balaclava and Anahita. Coast and transfer distance matter as much as star rating, so compare the location as well as the category.
Resort beaches cost more than guesthouses. Confirm whether the beach at your hotel is swimmable on your travel dates, because a lower rate may not offer the beach you expect.
The meal plan is a major part of the cost. Breakfast only (CP) is the most flexible option and suits travellers who like to eat locally. Half board adds dinner, and full board or all-inclusive plans add more meals. Hotel meals can cost substantially more than local restaurants and beach food trucks.
Travellers from India often say that vegetarian choices are easy to find, but hotel dining can be expensive. Breakfast-only plans, with lunches and dinners in local restaurants, usually reduce the total.
Private airport transfers are the usual choice for resort areas, and prices are set per vehicle. The cost depends on distance and vehicle type, so ask for a quote that names the vehicle and the route. Taxis are convenient but add up quickly if used often, so agree on fares or book in advance.
A rental car gives flexibility for a longer trip, but it adds insurance, fuel and parking costs. Buses cost less on selected routes, but they are slower and less practical for tight sightseeing schedules.
Excursions are often the most variable item. Catamaran cruises, Île aux Cerfs trips, diving, snorkelling, kitesurfing, spa treatments and private boat charters all add cost. Headline prices often exclude lunch, transfers and water activities. Ask for an itemised quote before you decide what to include.
Shared trips cost less than private ones. A shared catamaran excursion is a practical budget choice, while a private boat or private vehicle for a full day costs more but gives you more control over timing.
December and January are the peak months, with strong demand around Christmas and New Year. Prices are typically higher then. February and March can be wetter and carry cyclone risk,.
May to September is generally the cheaper value season, with October and November in a middle band that balances weather, availability and price. Our research notes that May and July to September can suit budget travellers who plan ahead.
Trip length is the simplest lever. Three days is tight and covers only the main highlights. Five days is a good fit for a first visit. Seven days is ideal for most travellers, because it covers the north, west, southwest and east. Ten days allows a slower trip with more leisure time and a marine or nature activity, and fourteen days is usually more than most travellers need.
Each extra night adds hotel and meal costs, so consider whether your extra days add new places or only more beach time.
The local currency is the Mauritian rupee (MUR). Cards are widely accepted in established hotels, restaurants and larger businesses. Carry some cash for markets, small local stops and taxis. The exchange rate changes, so check it before you travel and compare rates at exchange counters before you change money.
Our Mauritius packages are land-only, so flights are booked separately. Each package states what is included, such as hotel nights on twin sharing, daily meals, private airport transfers, private-vehicle sightseeing and visa assistance. Lunches, boat trips, spa treatments, travel insurance and personal expenses are extra. You can review the options in our Mauritius Island Classic 6N, Mauritius Honeymoon 6N and Mauritius Family 6N packages, and ask for a written quote.

FAQs
Short answers to what travellers ask about Mauritius.
We do not quote prices in this guide, because costs depend on dates, departure city, hotel and activities. The main drivers are flights, hotel category and coast, meal plan, season and excursions. Ask a planner for a written quote that lists every inclusion. Compare quotes on the same dates, the same hotel coast and the same meal plan.
No. Our Mauritius packages are land-only. Flights are booked separately, and they are usually the largest single cost. Our planners can suggest suitable timings from your city, and they can match your flights to the transfer and hotel dates in your itinerary.
It is generally a mid-to-upmarket destination. Guesthouses and simple meals are affordable, but resorts, private transfers and water activities raise costs. Flights and resort transfers keep the floor above many Asian beach destinations. Your total depends on the coast, season and inclusions you choose, so compare written quotes side by side.
May to September is usually the value season. December and January are peak months with higher prices. October and November sit in a middle band. Compare dates and check the total cost, not just the room rate.
Travel in the value season, choose a guesthouse or 3-star hotel, pick breakfast-only or half-board plans, use buses on selected routes and book shared catamaran trips. Eating at local restaurants also lowers the daily cost.
Our packages include daily breakfast and dinner, which is half board, on the stated nights. Lunches and drinks are extra. Confirm the meal plan for each hotel in your written quote.
Private transfers are priced per vehicle and depend on distance and vehicle type. Ask for a quote that names the vehicle and the route. Taxi fares should be agreed in advance, and pre-booked transfers are usually easier for resort areas.
It depends on your plans. A rental car gives flexibility for Chamarel, Black River Gorges and other inland sights. It adds insurance, fuel and parking costs, and driving is on the left. Travellers say automatic cars can be scarce, so book early.
