FAQs
Short answers to what travellers ask about Mauritius.
Five to seven nights suit most first visits. Three days covers only the main highlights. Seven days lets you cover the north, west, southwest and east without rushing, while ten days allows a slower island-wide trip with extra leisure and one guided activity.
May to October is cooler and drier, and September to November is especially favourable for beaches and sightseeing. October is often the strongest single month. December to March is warmer and wetter, with cyclone risk, so allow for weather disruption in that period.
Indian ordinary-passport holders generally do not need a visa for a normal tourist visit, but admission is discretionary. Carry a valid passport, a return or onward ticket, confirmed accommodation and sufficient funds. Verify current requirements with official Mauritius sources before departure.
The local currency is the Mauritian rupee (MUR). Cards are widely accepted in established hotels, restaurants and larger businesses. The exchange rate changes, so check the current rate before you travel, and carry some cash for markets and small local stops.
Mauritius is generally considered relatively safe, but normal precautions apply. Watch belongings in busy markets and beaches, use licensed taxis or trusted transfers at night, avoid isolated beaches after dark and check sea conditions before swimming. Follow weather updates from January to March.
Travellers most often favour the north or west for a first stay. Grand Baie and Trou aux Biches offer accessible restaurants, while the west has convenient beach access. Many first-timers choose one or two bases and take day trips.
Travellers report that vegetarian choices and Indian-influenced food, such as roti and bhajis, are widely available. Hotel meals can cost more than local restaurants. Confirm dietary needs with your hotel in advance and ask about vegetarian options at set-menu dinners.
It is optional. Private transfers suit resort areas, and travellers often add a rental car after arrival for flexibility. Driving is on the left. Travellers say automatic cars may be the only option at booking time, so check before you arrive. Buses are slower.
