Georgia is a country of the South Caucasus, on the Black Sea, where Europe and Asia meet. For Indian travellers it is a compact destination with a great deal to see. Tbilisi, the capital, is the base for most first trips, and the main sights lie within reach of it by road. English is common in tourism areas and Russian is widely understood, so hotels, guides and drivers are easy to work with.
The country packs a lot into a short trip. Tbilisi offers the Old Town, the sulphur-bath district and the hilltop Narikala Fortress. Mtskheta, the ancient ecclesiastical capital, holds Jvari Monastery and Svetitskhoveli Cathedral. Kazbegi has the dramatic Gergeti Trinity Church under the Greater Caucasus. Kakheti is the main wine region, known for cellar visits and qvevri winemaking. In winter, Gudauri is the most accessible ski base near the capital.
Flights from India do not run direct. Most routes take about eight to twelve and a half hours with one stop, often via Baku, Kuwait City or a Gulf hub, and most travellers land at Tbilisi International Airport. Mountain travel depends on weather and road conditions, so build a spare half-day into your plan.
