Georgia has four clear seasons, and each suits a different trip. Spring and early autumn are the strongest all-round months for cities, wine country and mountain touring. Summer is the season for highland trekking and the Black Sea coast, though lowland towns can be hot. Winter is for snow, and it is quiet in the cities. Use the guide below to match the month to your priorities.
When is the best time to visit Georgia?
May to June and September to October offer the right balance for most travellers. Daytime highs are comfortable, rainfall is moderate and the sights are open. May is warm and green, and it suits most routes. September is one of the strongest shoulder months, with warm days, harvest experiences in wine regions and fewer crowds than July or August. October brings autumn colour and is good for wine country and cultural touring.
Month-by-month at a glance
- January: cold, with highs of about 7°C and lows near -1°C. Good for city breaks and mountain snow.
- February: cool and relatively dry, with highs of about 9°C. Good value for city travel and ski conditions at Gudauri.
- March: mild but changeable, with highs of about 13°C and some rain. Sightseeing is comfortable.
- April: pleasant spring weather, with highs of about 19°C and around 42 mm of rain. Good for cities and wine country.
- May: one of the best months, with highs of about 24°C and lows near 12°C. Warm, green and suitable for most routes.
- June: warm, with highs of about 28°C and lows near 16°C. Excellent for culture, hiking and regional touring, though it is one of the wetter months.
- July: hot in the lowlands, with highs of about 31°C. Ideal for mountains and the Black Sea, with higher prices.
- August: peak summer, with highs of about 31°C. Hot in Tbilisi and busy at resorts, but strong for highland trips.
- September: warm, with highs of about 26°C and lows near 15°C. Harvest experiences and fewer crowds.
- October: mild and scenic, with highs of about 19°C. Good for autumn foliage and wine regions.
- November: cool and quieter, with highs of about 13°C. Suitable for Tbilisi, Kakheti and cultural touring, but less favourable for mountain access.
- December: cold in the cities and snowy in the resorts, with highs of about 8°C. Festive city breaks and skiing are viable.
Spring: April and May
Spring is one of the most comfortable times to visit. April is pleasant for city sightseeing and early wine-country touring, with some rain. May is warmer and greener, and it suits most routes, from Tbilisi to Kazbegi and Kakheti. May and June are the most balanced months for a first trip that covers cities and mountains.
Summer: June to August
Summer suits walkers, hikers and beach travellers. June is warm and generally excellent for culture, hiking and regional touring. Late June to mid-September is the strongest window for high-Caucasus hiking, because mountain access is more reliable. July and August are hot in the lowlands and in Tbilisi, and the coast and resorts are busy. Start mountain excursions early, because afternoon cloud can hide the views.
Autumn: September and October
September and October are often the strongest months for a balance of weather and value. September has warm days, harvest experiences and fewer crowds than summer. October brings mild temperatures and autumn colour, which suits wine regions and cultural touring. Book accommodation in Kazbegi and Gudauri early, as demand can still be high on weekends.
Winter: November to March
November is cooler and quieter, with less favourable conditions for mountain access. December to February is the core ski period, with the strongest snow at Gudauri and in other resorts. Tbilisi is cold, but its museums, churches and festive atmosphere suit a winter city break. Mountain roads can be disrupted by snow, so keep a spare morning or an overnight stay before any tight airport connection.
Which month suits which trip?
- City and culture: May, June, September and October.
- Wine country: September and October for harvest, and May for green landscapes.
- Hiking and mountains: late June to mid-September for high-Caucasus routes.
- Skiing: December to March, with Gudauri as the most accessible base.
- Black Sea coast: July and August, with the understanding that weather is wetter than in eastern Georgia.
