Georgia travel guide
The main places to visit in Georgia are Tbilisi's Old Town and sulphur baths, the churches of Mtskheta, Kazbegi and Gergeti Trinity Church, the Kakheti wine region, Borjomi's spa forests, the Batumi coast and the Gudauri ski base. Most first trips use Tbilisi as a base and add two or three day trips.

Georgia's places are spread across a small country, and the most common planning mistake is trying to cover the capital, the mountains, the wine region and the coast in one short trip. Group the places by area instead. Give each area a full day or a night, use Tbilisi as your base, and choose two or three extras. The sections below describe each main place and say what suits it best.
Think of Georgia in five zones. Tbilisi is the capital and the base for most visitors. Mtskheta lies close to the capital and makes a half-day trip. Kazbegi and Gudauri sit in the Greater Caucasus, along the mountain road north of Tbilisi. Kakheti is the eastern wine region. Borjomi and the western spa towns lie further away, and Batumi is the Black Sea coast. Mountain roads and weather decide how much you can fit into a day, so keep one spare morning in your plan.
Tbilisi is the most rewarding first stop. The Old Town holds narrow streets, wooden balconies and courtyards, and the sulphur-bath district sits below the hillside. From the Narikala Fortress you get wide views over the city. Visit the Old Town in the late afternoon, then return after dark, when the courtyards and bath district are more atmospheric. Insider advice is not to treat Tbilisi only as an arrival night, so give the city a full second day if you can.
Stay in the Old Town, Avlabari or Vera for walkability. Rustaveli and Freedom Square suit travellers who want wider streets and easy access to major hotels and dining. Plan at least two days in the capital for a first visit.
Mtskheta is Georgia's ancient ecclesiastical capital, and it sits a short drive from Tbilisi. Jvari Monastery stands on a hill above the river meeting point, and its view is clearest in the morning light. Svetitskhoveli Cathedral lies in the old town below. The usual tip is to see Jvari first, then come down to Mtskheta before the day-trip crowds peak. Mtskheta works well as a half-day stop on the way to the mountains, or as a day trip from the capital.
Kazbegi, also known as Stepantsminda, is Georgia's signature mountain stop. The Gergeti Trinity Church sits above the village, with the Greater Caucasus rising behind it. The route north follows the Georgian Military Highway, which can be delayed by snow, traffic or landslides. Plan an overnight rather than a fixed day return. Travellers often say that a spare morning or night in the village saves a trip when the weather turns.
For the church, start early. Summer heat and afternoon cloud can hide the peak of Mount Kazbek, so morning is usually the clearest time. Keep the afternoon flexible.
Kakheti is Georgia's principal wine region. Cellar visits, qvevri winemaking and vineyard landscapes make it a rewarding day or two. Sighnaghi and Telavi are the main towns, and both have a relaxed pace. Qvevri are clay vessels in which wine is traditionally made and aged, and many cellars explain the method. Prearrange your driver and winery visits, because spontaneous tastings are less reliable outside the main towns.
Borjomi is a forested spa town known for its mineral water, and it sits in the Borjomi-Kharagauli landscape. The town is also the access point toward Bakuriani. It works well as a transition stop on a route toward western Georgia, rather than as a rushed day trip from Tbilisi.
Batumi offers a Black Sea promenade, subtropical botanical surroundings and a modern coastal feel that contrasts with the older cities inland. The Adjara coast also includes Gonio, Kvariati and Shekvetili beaches. The season is shorter than on Mediterranean coasts, and the weather is wetter than in eastern Georgia. Keep indoor alternatives in your plan, and do not expect guaranteed beach weather outside summer.
Gudauri is Georgia's most accessible ski base, near the capital. It has winter slopes in season and mountain views in summer. Snow conditions vary with altitude, so the timing of a ski trip matters. Altitude and road conditions affect the journey more than the short distance from Tbilisi suggests, so build flexibility into winter transfers. For Mestia and the Svaneti region, the skiing and trekking are more remote and need extra days.
Uplistsikhe and Vardzia are cave towns, carved into rock by earlier communities. They suit travellers who want historic sites away from the standard first-time route. Both need a long day or a second night in the south, and they work best with a private driver.
Svaneti offers dramatic Caucasus mountains and trekking, with mountain villages and a remote feel. Tusheti is a remote valley that is open only in suitable weather windows. Both are for travellers with extra time and a flexible plan.

Tbilisi is the most practical base for a first visit, because it links to Kazbegi, Mtskheta and Kakheti by road. Old Tbilisi and Vera suit travellers who want walkable evenings. Rustaveli and Freedom Square are good for wider streets and major hotels. For Batumi, the Boulevard area suits a coastal stay. In Kakheti, choose a guesthouse in Sighnaghi or Telavi for wine-country evenings.
Our planners group Georgia's places by area, so you spend your time sightseeing instead of on long road days. They can add a private vehicle for mountain routes, arrange cellar visits in Kakheti and book Kazbegi accommodation early. Ask for a written quote that lists every inclusion.

FAQs
Short answers to what travellers ask about Georgia.
Tbilisi's Old Town and sulphur baths, Narikala Fortress, Jvari Monastery and Svetitskhoveli Cathedral in Mtskheta, and Gergeti Trinity Church in Kazbegi are the core first-trip sights. Kakheti's wine cellars are the main addition for a longer trip.
Plan at least two days. The Old Town, the sulphur-bath district and Narikala Fortress fit well in one day, and a second day allows museums, dining and a walking tour. Many travellers find that a full day in the city is well spent.
A night in Kazbegi is better than a day return. Mountain weather and road conditions can delay the drive, so an overnight gives you a clear morning for Gergeti Trinity Church and a buffer if the road is slow.
Both work. A single day suits a guided cellar tour, but two nights in Sighnaghi or Telavi let you enjoy the wine region at an unhurried pace. Prearrange drivers and winery visits in advance.

Gudauri is Georgia's most accessible ski base, near the capital, with winter slopes in season and mountain views in summer. Snow and road conditions change with altitude, so build flexibility into winter transfers.
They suit travellers who have more time and want to go off the standard route. Uplistsikhe and Vardzia are cave towns, and Svaneti and Tusheti are remote. Add them only when your trip is long enough and the weather allows.
