Indian ordinary-passport holders can visit Phu Quoc without a visa for up to 30 days. The exemption applies when Phu Quoc is the final destination in Vietnam, and the traveller arrives directly from abroad or transits through the international transit area of a Vietnamese international airport. It is a Phu Quoc-only exemption. It does not allow travel to mainland Vietnam, so a trip that includes Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City or Da Nang needs a valid Vietnamese visa or e-visa. The rules are published by Vietnam's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the research we hold lists no fee for the exemption.
Do Indians need a visa for Phu Quoc?
For a Phu Quoc-only trip of up to 30 days, the answer is generally no, provided you meet the entry conditions. The research lists the visa status for Indian ordinary-passport holders as not required. The exemption covers your stay on the island only. Because the conditions are specific, check them against your own route before you book flights, especially if your trip starts or ends on the mainland.
What are the conditions?
Your trip must meet each of these conditions for the exemption to apply:
- You hold an ordinary passport issued to you in India.
- You arrive directly from outside Vietnam, or transit through the international transit area of a Vietnamese international airport.
- Phu Quoc is the final Vietnamese destination on your trip.
- Your stay is no longer than 30 days.
- Your passport is valid for at least six months beyond the planned stay.
A valid passport and proof of onward or return travel may be requested at entry. Carry both.
When do you need a Vietnam visa?
A visa or e-visa is needed if your trip includes mainland Vietnam, or if you do not meet the exemption conditions. Three common mistakes can cause problems. The first is entering Phu Quoc under the exemption and then travelling to mainland Vietnam, because the exemption does not authorise travel elsewhere in the country. The second is staying beyond 30 days. The third is arriving through Vietnam and not continuing directly to Phu Quoc, because the exemption may then not apply.
If your itinerary includes Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang or any destination outside Phu Quoc, obtain a Vietnamese e-visa before you travel. This is the case for Phu Quoc Ho Chi Minh 6N, which includes two nights in Ho Chi Minh City.
Documents to carry
- Indian ordinary passport: valid for at least six months beyond the planned stay. This document is critical.
- Proof of onward or return travel: carry your flight details. The cited official source does not confirm this as a requirement, but immigration may ask for it.
- Your Phu Quoc accommodation details: keep the hotel name and address with you.
Keep a copy of your passport and travel documents in a separate place while you travel.
How to enter on the exemption
- Travel directly to Phu Quoc from outside Vietnam. Alternatively, transit through a Vietnamese international border checkpoint and continue directly to Phu Quoc, for example through Phu Quoc International Airport.
- At the port of entry, go to the Vietnam immigration counter and ask for the visa-exemption entry stamp.
- Keep your passport with you during your stay, and keep your departure plans ready in case you are asked for them.
The research does not give a processing time for the exemption because it is granted at immigration on arrival.
Visa fees and processing
The research lists the Phu Quoc exemption as free. For any visa or e-visa that you need for mainland Vietnam, the research we hold does not give a fee or a processing time. Confirm both on the official Vietnamese source before you pay, and do not rely on a third-party site for charges. Fees can change, so check the current figure before you apply.
Does a Tripstor package include the visa?
Our Phu Quoc packages are land-only. Visa assistance is included, so our planners help you check the rules for your route and, where needed, your e-visa application. Flights and any visa fee are arranged separately. The Phu Quoc Island Escape 4N package stays on the island, so the exemption rules above are the ones to check. The Phu Quoc Ho Chi Minh 6N package includes a mainland stay, so it needs a Vietnamese e-visa.
