Phu Quoc is a tropical island in the Mekong Delta, and its weather follows a clear pattern. The dry months run from November to April, when rain is lighter and beach conditions are more suitable for swimming and boat trips. The wet months run from June to September, when rain is frequent and the sea can be rough. Temperatures are warm all year, with daytime highs of about 30°C to 35°C and night-time lows of about 24°C to 26°C. The rest of this guide shows how each month differs.
Which months suit a beach holiday?
If beach time is your priority, plan between November and April. In this window rainfall falls substantially, the seas are generally calmer and the beaches are at their most usable. December to February is the peak tourist season, so crowds and demand are highest, and you should book early. March and April are hotter, with highs of 33°C to 35°C, but they are quieter than the peak months.
Month by month
- January: highs about 30°C, lows about 24°C, rainfall about 31 mm. Warm and relatively dry, and busy because it is peak beach season.
- February: highs about 31°C, lows about 24°C, rainfall about 21 mm. The driest month, very dry and busy, with generally calm seas.
- March: highs about 33°C, lows about 25°C, rainfall about 90 mm. Hot, with low to moderate rain and fewer visitors than in peak season.
- April: highs about 35°C, lows about 26°C, rainfall about 137 mm. Hot and increasingly humid, with moderate rain and shoulder-season crowds.
- May: highs about 34°C, lows about 26°C, rainfall about 230 mm. Hot and humid as the rainy season develops, with lower crowds.
- June: highs about 32°C, lows about 26°C, rainfall about 369 mm. Humid and wet, with frequent rain and less reliable sea conditions.
- July: highs about 31°C, lows about 26°C, rainfall about 438 mm. Very wet and humid, with rougher seas and low-season crowds.
- August: highs about 31°C, lows about 26°C, rainfall about 415 mm. Very wet and humid, with rough seas and low-season crowds.
- September: highs about 31°C, lows about 25°C, rainfall about 542 mm. The wettest month, with frequent rain and low visitor numbers.
- October: highs about 31°C, lows about 25°C. Rainfall begins to ease, but showers remain common, and crowds are moderate to low.
- November: highs about 31°C, lows about 24°C, rainfall about 180 mm. Rain decreases substantially, beach conditions improve, and crowds begin to increase.
- December: highs about 30°C, lows about 24°C, rainfall about 77 mm. Warm and relatively dry, with generally calm seas and peak-season demand.
The dry season: November to April
This is the window most visitors plan around. Late autumn sees rain drop away and the beaches improve, and the peak months of December to February bring warm, dry days and busy resorts. February is the driest month, which suits island days, boat trips and the cable car. The main trade-off is demand, so the peak weeks need early bookings and possibly higher prices.
The wet season: June to September
The wet months bring heavy rain, humidity and rougher seas. July and August are very wet, and September is the wettest month of the year. Visitor numbers are lower, and some travellers prefer quieter resorts, but sea excursions and the cable car can be disrupted. If you travel in these months, build in flexible days and check conditions before each outing.
The shoulder months: May and October
May is the start of the rainy season, with hot, humid days and fewer visitors. October is a transition month, with rainfall easing but showers still common. Both months suit travellers who want lower crowds and are happy to plan for some rain. Keep indoor and flexible options ready, such as a museum visit or a relaxed resort day.
How to plan your month
- For the most reliable beach days, travel between November and April, with February the driest month.
- For peak-season demand and busy resorts, choose December to February and book early.
- For lower crowds with a chance of rain, consider May or October.
- For the wet season, plan lighter itineraries with weather-flexible days and avoid tight schedules.
- Check the cable-car status and sea conditions the day before any island excursion, whatever the month.
Heat and comfort
Even in the drier months, daytime temperatures are warm, with highs of about 30°C to 35°C. Plan outdoor sightseeing for early morning or late afternoon, and keep midday for the beach, a rest or an indoor attraction. Carry water and sun protection, and wear light clothing. Night-time lows stay around 24°C to 26°C, so evenings are warm year-round.
