South Korea packs a great deal into a compact country. Seoul alone holds royal palaces, traditional neighbourhoods, shopping districts and modern design, and the rest of the country adds coastal cities, ancient capitals and volcanic islands. The question for most travellers is not what to see but how to group it. This guide sets out each main place, the time it needs and how the places fit together on a first visit.
Seoul is the starting point for most trips, and it rewards time. Gyeongbokgung Palace and Changdeokgung Palace show Joseon-era royal architecture, and Bukchon Hanok Village offers traditional houses in quiet lanes. Insadong and Ikseondong add galleries, teahouses and craft shops nearby. Cluster the palace, Bukchon and Insadong on one day, because they sit close together and the walking adds up.
For a contrast, spend an afternoon in Hongdae for cafés and street culture, or Gangnam for large department stores and a polished city feel. Myeongdong is the most convenient base for a first visit, and travellers often say it is central for shopping, food and the main sights. N Seoul Tower on Namsan gives city views in the evening. DMZ tours are a major excursion, but they take a substantial part of the day and should not share a day with a palace visit. For a quieter offbeat stop, the Mullae arts village in an old industrial area is worth a short detour.
Busan is Korea's coastal counterpart to Seoul, and it feels more relaxed. Haeundae Beach is the most familiar, but travellers often prefer Gwangalli for beach and bridge views, especially in the evening. The Jagalchi seafood market is busy and lively, and it suits a morning visit. Gamcheon Culture Village, a hillside neighbourhood of painted houses, makes a half-day walk.
Plan to stay near Seomyeon or Haeundae, and use the KTX train from Seoul rather than a long road transfer. Busan works well as a two-day stop, with one day on the beach and markets and one day for the hillside village and the old market streets. Weather matters on the coast, so keep the second day flexible.
Gyeongju was the ancient capital of the Silla kingdom, and its historic core is spread across many sites. Bulguksa Temple and the nearby Seokguram Grotto are the highlights, and the royal tombs are a short distance from the city centre. Wolji Pond is lit up in the evening, which makes it a good end-of-day visit.
Gyeongju is better with an overnight stay than a rushed day trip, because the sites are spread out and need time. Two days is enough for the main heritage circuit. Gyeongju lies on the route between Seoul and Busan, so it fits neatly into a seven-day plan. Our Seoul Jeju Highlights 6N package does not include Gyeongju, but a custom itinerary can add it.
Jeju is Korea's strongest nature-focused circuit. Hallasan National Park, the mountain at the island's centre, offers hiking routes, and the island has lava tubes, lava formations, waterfalls and coastal drives. Jungmun Saekdal Beach on the south coast and Hamdeok Beach are popular stops. Jeju is reached by a domestic flight, and the island needs its own transport plan.
Travellers often advise at least four nights on Jeju, so the island is not rushed. A rental car or private vehicle is far more efficient than relying on buses, especially for routes across the island from east to west. Weather can change quickly on the mountain and along the coast, so keep a flexible alternative for each day.
Nami Island is an easy excursion from Seoul. It has wooded paths, riverside scenery and seasonal foliage, and it suits a relaxed day with a short walk and a lunch stop. It is a good choice for travellers who want nature without leaving the capital region. The Garden of Morning Calm is close by, but combining the two in one day is practical only with a private vehicle, because public-transport connections make the combined day tight.
Seoraksan National Park is a major mountain area, with hiking trails, cable-car views and autumn colours. Sokcho, on the east coast, is the base for the park and adds a seafood-oriented stop. Two days lets you pair a mountain walk with a coastal meal. Weather can close or delay cable-car and hiking plans, so keep a flexible alternative in the itinerary. Autumn is often the most rewarding season for the mountains, and it is a strong reason to plan around late September and October.
A seven-day trip suits Seoul for three days, a KTX journey to Busan for two days and Gyeongju for one day. A longer trip of ten to fourteen days can add Jeju, which needs at least four nights, or Seoraksan. Avoid trying to fit every regional city into one short trip. Our Korea K-Culture Tour 5N package keeps you in Seoul with an excursion, while the Seoul Jeju Highlights 6N package adds Jeju Island.
Travellers often say that over-scheduling is the most common mistake. Leave an afternoon free in each city, and plan one major activity for each half day. For the seasonal side, read best time to visit South Korea, and for the cost of each choice, read South Korea trip cost.

FAQs
Short answers to what travellers ask about South Korea.
Seoul, Busan, Gyeongju and either Jeju Island or Seoraksan make a practical first combination. Seoul needs about three days, Busan and Gyeongju about two days each, and Jeju about three days. Choose Jeju if you want volcanic scenery, or Seoraksan if you prefer mountains and a coastal stop.
Plan about three days for Seoul. One day suits the palaces, Bukchon and Insadong. Another covers Hongdae, Gangnam and shopping, and the third can be a day trip to Nami Island or a DMZ tour. Do not add a DMZ tour to a palace day, because the transfers and procedures take time.
Busan is worth a two-day stop if you enjoy beaches, seafood markets and hillside villages. It is reached by the KTX train from Seoul. On a very short trip, Busan can be a single overnight, but a rushed day trip does not show the city well.
Yes, if you can. The historic sites are spread across the city, and travellers often say a rushed day trip does not give enough time. An overnight stay lets you visit Bulguksa Temple and the royal tombs in the day and see Wolji Pond when it is lit in the evening.
Travellers commonly advise at least four nights on Jeju, so the island is not rushed. Three nights is possible for a tight visit, but it leaves little time for the coast and Hallasan. Plan a rental car or private vehicle for the east-west routes.
Yes. It is an easy day trip with wooded paths and riverside scenery. Public transport works for a single visit, but combining Nami Island with the Garden of Morning Calm in one day is practical only with a private vehicle.
Seoraksan offers hiking trails and cable-car views, and it suits travellers who enjoy walking. Choose routes that match your fitness and check the weather, because cable cars and trails can close or be delayed. Keep a flexible alternative day in your plan.
Many travellers add a DMZ tour as a major excursion. It takes a substantial part of the day because of transfers and security procedures. Keep it on its own day, and avoid planning a palace visit on the same day.
