Facts checked 3 Nov 2026
Finland and Norway have very different seasons. Both countries are cold for much of the year, but summer brings long daylight, and winter brings snow, short days and the Northern Lights. The right month depends on what you want to do. This guide sets out the months country by country, with the Northern Lights season and the shoulder months.
June to August is the best overall window for warm weather, with long daylight and the widest range of open attractions. July is the warmest month on average, which makes it ideal for lakes and cities. For winter activities and Lapland, December to February is the snowiest period.
For most Indian travellers, May to September is the best overall window for Norway. It brings milder weather, long daylight and good conditions for fjords, hiking and city sightseeing. June to August is the peak season. April to May and September to October are strong shoulder-season options, with quieter travel and often lower prices.
The Northern Lights season runs from late August to April. For Norway, the best period is generally late autumn to winter, especially September to March, when skies are darker. In Finland, peak viewing is often December to February, or February to March for more stable winter conditions. Sightings depend on clear skies and weather, so they cannot be promised.
April to May and September to October are commonly cheaper for flights and hotels in Finland, and November is often cited as one of the cheapest times to visit. Summer and the aurora season are usually the priciest periods. Choose a shoulder month if budget matters more than long daylight. See trip cost for more detail.
