Indonesia (beyond Bali) travel guide
Most travellers from India fly through a hub such as Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok, Ho Chi Minh City or Jakarta, because the research lists no direct flights from the Indian cities covered. Flying time from Chennai is about 4.8 hours and from Mumbai about 7.2 hours, not counting the connection. Gateways include Jakarta, Yogyakarta, Surabaya, Labuan Bajo and Makassar.
Facts checked 3 Nov 2026
Indonesia is reached from India by a long-haul flight, usually with one stop, and then by domestic flights or boats to the islands you plan to visit. The journey is the main planning challenge, not the international leg alone. This guide covers flight times from major Indian cities, the airlines and routings in our research, which gateway to choose, and how to move between islands once you arrive. Confirm all schedules before you book, because airlines change routes and times.
Flying time excludes the connection, so the total journey is always longer. The research gives these approximate flying times:
Jakarta's Soekarno-Hatta International Airport (CGK) is the main gateway for Java and for onward domestic connections. Yogyakarta International Airport (YIA) serves the Borobudur and Prambanan area. Surabaya's Juanda International Airport (SUB) is the gateway to East Java and Bromo. Labuan Bajo's airport (LBJ) is the gateway to Komodo National Park. Sultan Hasanuddin Airport in Makassar (UPG) serves eastern Indonesia. Lombok International Airport serves Lombok and the Gili Islands. Choose the gateway that matches your first stop, and avoid long same-day connections between islands.
Domestic flights are the fastest option for long distances, such as Java to Flores or Lombok to the east. Ferries and fast boats connect nearby islands, including Labuan Bajo with the Komodo-area islands and Lombok with the Gilis. In Java and Flores, private cars with drivers are practical for overland routes. In cities such as Jakarta, Yogyakarta and Surabaya, app-based taxis are available. Confirm boat fares, weather cancellation rules and luggage limits before you travel, because boats are the most weather-sensitive link.
Check your passport and visa requirements first. Your passport must be valid for at least six months, and you should carry evidence of onward travel. Read the Indonesia visa guide for Indians before you book, and allow time for the approval steps. Build the domestic leg into your plan, because a missed connection can cost a day of your trip.
Plan transfers by island. In Java, use private cars for temple days, and allow for traffic in and around Yogyakarta. On Flores, distances look shorter on a map than they are, because winding roads slow the journey. On Lombok, use a private vehicle for beach days, and book boat transfers to the Gilis in advance. Keep a flexible morning on any day that depends on a boat, and let your planner confirm the timings before you leave.
This guide is compiled from published tourism, weather and transport information and traveller reports, and was last checked on 2 November 2026. Airlines, routes and schedules change often, so confirm flight times, operating days and connection options with the airline before you book.

FAQs
Short answers to what travellers ask about Indonesia (beyond Bali).
The research lists no direct flights from the Indian cities covered, so most trips connect through Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok, Ho Chi Minh City or Jakarta. Schedules change, so confirm the current options with the airline before you book.
Flying time from Chennai is about 4.8 hours and from Mumbai about 7.2 hours, not counting the connection. From Delhi it is about 8.5 hours, and from Pune about 9.5 hours. The total journey is longer because of the stop and the wait.
Choose the gateway that matches your first stop. Jakarta suits Java and onward domestic connections, Yogyakarta serves the temple region, Labuan Bajo serves Komodo, and Lombok serves the Gilis. Avoid planning a tight same-day connection to a remote island.
Use a domestic flight for long distances. Ferries and fast boats connect nearby islands, and private cars with drivers cover overland routes in Java and Flores. Your planner can confirm the best link for your dates.
Boats are the most weather-sensitive link, and sea conditions can cancel or delay them. Confirm the weather plan, luggage rules and refund terms in writing, and keep a flexible morning on any boat day.
For eastern Indonesia, overnight near the gateway, or connect through Jakarta, rather than attempting a tight same-day transfer. A buffer night protects you from missed connections and weather delays.
Where possible, a single-ticket itinerary protects your baggage and helps with missed-connection handling. Ask your planner to compare single-ticket and separate-ticket options before you decide.
The research names Singapore Airlines, Malaysia Airlines, Thai Airways, Vietnam Airlines, Air India, Emirates, Scoot and AirAsia, depending on the city. Availability varies, so check each airline's schedule for your dates.
