Hong Kong & Macau travel guide
The main places to visit in Hong Kong are Victoria Peak, Tsim Sha Tsui and the harbour, Central and Sheung Wan, Lantau Island and Hong Kong Disneyland. In Macau, the Historic Centre, the Cotai Strip and Taipa Village are the core stops. Most first trips need five days, and seven days allows a Macau stay.

A compact Disney park with family rides, seasonal entertainment and airport-side access. Check the official calendar for park hours and closures, and do not add Macau to the same day.
Combines the Big Buddha, Po Lin Monastery, the Ngong Ping plateau and rural island scenery. Check cable-car operations and the weather before you set out.
Shows Portuguese-Chinese architecture through Senado Square, the Ruins of St. Paul's and nearby heritage lanes. It is walkable but hilly and crowded, so start early.
Offers dense street markets, local food, shops and a strong night-time urban atmosphere. Keep valuables secure in crowded lanes and check shop return policies before buying electronics.
Offers hiking, island boat trips, geopark landscapes and seafood away from the central skyline. Boat trips depend on weather and sea conditions, so pre-arrange them.
Gives Macau's strongest contrast to the casino district through local food, colonial lanes and quieter waterfront areas. Visit Taipa in the late afternoon, and add Coloane only if time allows.
Combines the harbour promenade, museums, skyline views and evening dining in one compact base. The waterfront is busiest at sunset, so go early for photographs.
Gives Hong Kong's defining skyline panorama across Victoria Harbour and Kowloon. Book the Peak Tram in advance or travel up by bus or taxi, and plan sunset around weather, because cloud can hide the view.
Hong Kong and Macau are two cities with very different characters, and their sights are spread across islands, hills and waterfronts rather than packed into one centre. The most common planning mistake is trying to see Victoria Peak, Lantau, a theme park and Macau in a single day. Group the places by area, give each area its own half or full day, and use the list below to decide what is worth your time.
Think of the trip in four zones. Hong Kong Island holds Victoria Peak, Central and Sheung Wan. Kowloon covers Tsim Sha Tsui, the harbour and Mong Kok. The outlying areas include Lantau Island, Hong Kong Disneyland and Sai Kung. Macau is a separate city across the water, with its Historic Centre, Cotai resorts and Taipa and Coloane villages. Hong Kong's MTR links most urban districts, while taxis, buses and ferries are usually needed for Lantau, Sai Kung and the cross-border trip to Macau.
Victoria Peak provides Hong Kong's defining panorama over the harbour and Kowloon. Half a day is enough, and the Peak Tram queue can be long, so book in advance or travel up by bus or taxi. Cloud can hide the view, so plan the visit around the weather rather than a fixed sunset time. Travellers often say the Peak is worth the crowds, and
Tsim Sha Tsui is a practical first-visit base, close to the harbour promenade, museums, shops and evening dining. The skyline is often seen most clearly from the waterfront after dark, when the nightly light show plays across the harbour. Haze can affect the view, so the free waterfront is often a better choice than a paid observation deck. Ride the Star Ferry across the harbour for a classic crossing with views of both shores.
Central and Sheung Wan contrast skyscrapers with older streets, temples, wet markets and the tram lines. Man Mo Temple and the Former Central Police Station show the older districts and the colonial past. The walk is shorter than it looks on a map, but steep escalators, crowds and heat make a loose route better than a tight checklist.
Lantau Island is the largest of Hong Kong's outlying islands and combines the Big Buddha, Po Lin Monastery, the Ngong Ping plateau and rural scenery. The Ngong Ping 360 cable car makes the journey part of the visit. Book the cabin in advance, and check cable-car operations and the weather before you set out, because wind or maintenance can interrupt service. Tai O, a fishing village on the west side, adds a slower contrast if the day has enough buffer.
Hong Kong Disneyland is a compact Disney park with family rides, seasonal entertainment and convenient airport-side access. It works well as one full day, and the park suits families with children of mixed ages. Use the official calendar for park hours, attraction closures and ticket dates, and do not assume every ticket allows unrestricted entry. Do not combine the park with a Macau visit on the same day, because queues, transfers and evening travel make that plan unreliable. Our Hong Kong Disneyland Family 4N package builds a full park day into four nights.
Sai Kung gives clearer access to Hong Kong's hiking, island, geopark and seafood experiences, away from the central skyline. Sai Kung East Country Park has trails, and Dragon's Back is a ridge walk listed among Hong Kong's adventure highlights. Boat trips and remote beaches depend on weather and sea conditions, so pre-arrange a boat rather than relying on last-minute availability. Hiking is a strong option for a seven-day trip, but it is less suitable in heavy rain or during typhoon warnings.
Mong Kok offers dense street markets, local food, sneaker shops, electronics and a lively night-time atmosphere. Travellers often add it to their plans after seeing the harbour, and the Ladies' Market is a popular stop for shopping. Keep valuables secure in crowded lanes, and check shop return policies before buying electronics or luxury goods.
The Macau Historic Centre shows Portuguese-Chinese architecture through Senado Square, the Ruins of St. Paul's and nearby heritage lanes. A-Ma Temple adds a traditional stop by the water. The area is walkable but hilly and crowded, so start early and use hotel shuttles or taxis to cover the longer distances. An overnight stay in Macau is more relaxed than a rushed day trip. Our Hong Kong Macau 5N package includes two nights in Macau.
The Cotai Strip concentrates Macau's major integrated resorts, large-scale shows, dining and luxury shopping. Resorts such as The Venetian Macao and Wynn Palace are part of the experience, and travellers often describe the show and the resort interiors as a highlight. Resort shuttles are useful, but allow substantial transfer time between properties, and confirm show schedules before you arrive.
Taipa Village gives the strongest contrast to the casino district, with local food, colonial lanes and quieter waterfront areas. It suits a late-afternoon visit. Coloane Village is quieter still, but it needs more transport time, so add it only if the day allows. Trying to cover both quickly weakens the experience.

Tsim Sha Tsui is the most convenient first-visit base in Hong Kong, close to the harbour, museums and transport. Central and Admiralty suit travellers who want to walk to the old lanes and business district, though hotels there cost more. Mong Kok and Yau Ma Tei suit a market-focused stay on a lower budget. For Macau, the Cotai resorts and the Macau Peninsula are the two common bases. Choose by location and transport access as well as price.

Plan about half a day. The Peak Tram can have long queues, so book ahead or travel by bus or taxi. Check the weather, because cloud can hide the view. Pair the visit with Hong Kong Park or a walk through Central.

Tsim Sha Tsui is the most convenient first-visit base, with harbour views, museums, dining and easy transport. Central suits travellers who want to walk to the old lanes and the business district, though hotels there cost more.
One full day is enough for most visitors. Check the official calendar for hours and closures, and plan rest breaks and indoor shows for the middle of the day. Do not add a Macau visit to the same day.
Yes, for hiking, island boat trips, geopark landscapes and seafood away from the skyline. Boat trips and remote beaches depend on weather and sea conditions, so pre-arrange a boat and avoid planning the day for typhoon-warning periods.
Hong Kong is a dense, vertical city with a skyline, harbour and transit network. Macau is smaller and has Portuguese-Chinese heritage, a historic centre and large casino resorts. The two cities have separate immigration controls, so plan time at each border.
