Hong Kong and Macau have a subtropical climate, so the weather shapes the trip more than the calendar does. Summer is hot, humid and rainy, while autumn and early winter are cooler and drier. Choosing the right month affects how much you can walk, how clear the views from Victoria Peak will be, and whether ferries and cable cars run to plan. This guide explains the seasons and gives a month-by-month summary for planning.
Plan for October to December if you can. October and November give the most comfortable temperatures with lower rainfall, and December is cool and relatively dry. March and April are the next strongest options, with warm days and more humidity. Avoid planning outdoor sightseeing for June to September unless you accept heat, heavy rain and possible typhoon disruption.
October is a transition month with warm days, moderate humidity and one of the strongest periods to visit. November is cooler and drier, with excellent conditions for walking, Lantau and Sai Kung. December is cool and relatively dry, with daytime highs near 20°C, which suits sightseeing and the festive period. These months are also the busiest for hotels, so book early. Travellers often describe late October to early December as the most comfortable period, because humidity falls and visibility improves.
January and February are cool, mostly dry and good for city touring. Light layers are useful in the mornings and evenings, and February can be occasionally damp. March is mild but humid, with more showers and a mix of indoor and outdoor plans working well. April is warm and humid, with increasing rain, and it is generally workable with flexible plans. Lunar New Year can bring crowds and higher hotel rates in these months, so check the dates.
May marks the start of the wet season, with heat, humidity and frequent showers. June is very humid and among the wettest months, and typhoon risk begins. July is hot and wet, with thunderstorms and tropical systems possible. August is the wettest month on average and carries the highest disruption risk. September remains hot and humid, and typhoon risk stays significant. Summer can bring lower prices, but the weather can disrupt ferries, harbour views and outdoor days.
These figures are averages. Actual weather varies from year to year, so check the forecast close to your dates.
Families and first-time visitors usually do best in October to December, when the weather supports long days at Disneyland, Ocean Park and Lantau. Couples who want skyline views and harbour evenings also favour these months, along with March. Budget-focused travellers may prefer the summer months, but they should accept rain and heat and keep indoor plans ready. Hikers and island travellers should aim for November, when the air is drier and the trails are more comfortable.
Whatever the month, keep a rain plan. Book timed attractions and the Ngong Ping 360 cable car in advance, and check ferry and cable-car operations before the day. In summer, schedule outdoor walks early or late and use the MTR and indoor attractions during the heat. Pack light layers for air conditioning, which can feel cold after the humid streets.
