FAQs

Egypt Travel Guide: FAQs

Short answers to what travellers ask about Egypt.

How many days do I need in Egypt?

Three nights covers Cairo and Giza. Five to seven days covers Cairo, Luxor and part of the Nile, and ten to fourteen days allows Aswan, Abu Simbel and a Red Sea stay. Seven nights with a Nile cruise is a balanced first visit for most travellers.

Is Egypt safe for tourists?

Most established tourist routes operate normally, but follow current government advisories before you travel. Use licensed guides, reputable operators and prearranged transfers. Dress modestly at religious sites and keep valuables secure in crowded areas, including the Pyramids and busy bazaars.

What currency is used in Egypt?

Egypt uses the Egyptian pound (EGP). The exchange rate against the rupee varies, so check the current rate before you travel and compare what you receive before you exchange money or pay by card. Carry low-denomination notes for tips and small purchases.

Is English widely spoken in Egypt?

English is widely used in tourism, including in hotels, airports, many restaurants and by most licensed guides. Arabic is the official language, and a few basic Arabic phrases help outside the main tourist circuit. A licensed guide makes Luxor and Aswan much easier to manage.

What is the time difference between India and Egypt?

Egypt is on UTC+2, so India is three and a half hours ahead. During Egypt's daylight-saving period, Egypt is on UTC+3, and the gap is two and a half hours. Check the local time for your flight and transfer timings before you travel.

Do I need a visa for Egypt?

Indian ordinary-passport holders generally need an Egyptian tourist visa, usually obtained through the official e-Visa portal. Do not assume you can get a visa on arrival. Check current fees and eligibility on the official site before you pay, and see the [Egypt visa guide for Indians](/visa/egypt-visa-for-indians/).

What is the best time to visit Egypt?

October to April is the most comfortable season. October, November, March and April balance good temperatures with lower demand. December to February is busiest and often most expensive. June to August is very hot, especially inland, so plan early starts and air-conditioned transport.

Is a Nile cruise worth adding to a trip?

For many travellers, yes. A cruise between Luxor and Aswan combines accommodation with sightseeing and cuts down on hotel changes. Cabin quality varies widely, and sailing dates can change with river conditions. Ask for the vessel category before you pay, and check whether the temple visits fit your pace.
