Most Indian travellers to New Zealand need to apply for a Visitor Visa before they fly. This page explains who needs one, which documents are usually asked for, how the application works and what fees to expect. The details come from the official visitor-visa information we have on file. Requirements and fees change, so check the current rules with Immigration New Zealand before you book flights or hotels.
Do Indians need a visa for New Zealand?
Yes. Indian passport holders generally need a New Zealand Visitor Visa before travel. The New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority (NZeTA) is not normally sufficient for Indian citizens, so do not assume an electronic travel authority is enough. Confirm your status with Immigration New Zealand before you buy a ticket.
Which visa should you apply for?
For a holiday trip, the Visitor Visa is the route our information covers. Keep the length and purpose of your trip in line with your application. If your plans change before you apply, check with Immigration New Zealand which visa applies.
What documents are usually needed?
Requirements can differ by application, but expect to provide the following:
- A passport that is valid for your planned stay.
- Recent passport-style photographs that meet the official specification.
- An itinerary showing your planned dates, cities and travel arrangements.
- Evidence of accommodation for your stay in New Zealand.
- Evidence of financial means to cover your trip.
- Evidence of ties to India, such as employment or study, that show you plan to return.
- Evidence of onward or return travel.
- English translations of any documents that are not in English, where they are required.
Use the official checklist for the current list of documents, because the requirements can change.
How do you apply?
Applications are made online through Immigration New Zealand. You can also apply through a New Zealand Visa Application Centre in India, which can help you submit your documents. Follow these steps:
- Check the current requirements and fees on the Immigration New Zealand website.
- Prepare your passport, photographs and supporting documents, and translate any that are not in English.
- Complete the online application, or book an appointment at a Visa Application Centre.
- Pay the visa fee and the levy, then submit your application.
- Keep a copy of your approval, and check that the details match your passport.
What fees should you expect?
Immigration New Zealand lists a Visitor Visa fee of NZD 441. Most visitors also pay the NZD 100 International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy. Fees and exchange rates change. Check the official fee schedule and any charges from the application route you choose before you pay.
Driving with an Indian licence
If you plan to drive, an Indian licence is valid with some conditions. You may need an approved English translation, or an International Driving Permit, depending on the licence. Drivers in New Zealand keep left. Confirm the rules for your licence before you travel.
What mistakes should you avoid?
- Assuming the NZeTA is enough for an Indian passport holder.
- Applying with a passport that will expire soon after your planned return.
- Leaving out translations of documents that are not in English.
- Booking non-refundable flights before the visa is approved.
- Relying on old fee figures or outdated document lists.
